Changes made, see other post by me.

From what I've seen on the Ausubaru board, not too shabby. They run Leg's on the sand quite a bit. You may have to air down some, but then again, pretty much everyone on the sand does. -
I remember seeing those a couple of those campers on Brats around Elat. Had one of those WTF! effects. Never saw a grabber green Brat though. If you really want to get some Pueg wheels, then you want to get into Sharm El Sheik, Sinia, Egypt. over 90% of the cars in the area are 505 Pueg's. As for parts, if any of you come across some taillights, then there will be some interested party's here in the states, I know myself for one would be interested in at least one set of good taillights. As I just got a new Brat (new to me) and one tailight is melted, and the other shattered. And finding replacements over here is getting really hard.

A J10 eh? Most of us on here are from the states, and we have no such critter by that name over here. Maybe if you can get a picture for us to see whot they look like, it might be something that we do have, and be able to offer up some advise on it. But for the moment, I know at least I'm stumped. Ohkay, I did a little poking around, and I think I've come up with whot we're working with. Over here we call em Justy's. So if you edit your title, with J10/Justy, you'll prolly get a lot more reply's right away. Hope you get whot your looking for, and welcome aboard.

The only real difference with the 11's is convenience, cause you don't have to set the gap yourself (although I'd still check them before they go in). But if you get the standard non-pregapped ones, they will work just the same as the 11's, (after you gap them). It's all about convenience.

Hey all, I posted this up a while back, but didn't get much response, but here we are 2 weeks out, so I thought I would throw it up again. The Rogue Roo's will be at the Oregon Dunes National Park for Memorial Day weekend. If you love sand (like I do), or have never experienced it before and want to add another terrain type to your soobs Exploits, come along with us. We will be leaving the Medford Area on Friday, and prolly heading back late Sunday. For those of you that know the area, we will be in the Spinreel area. If you are interested and want any info, then jes drop me a line. Hope to see ya there.

ea81 turbo removal ?s
Adam N.D.J. replied to subiemech85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
1. how does the pipe from the filter adapt to the plenum? Not sure whot you want to know here, are you talking from the air filter into the throttle body? If so, then there is a plastic tube that runs from the VAM (air meter) to the turbo, then an aluminum pipe that goes from the turbo into the throttle body. Check the gallery, you can see a bunch of turbo pics in there. 2. where does the oil supply come from the engeine? The oil feed for the turbo comes from the oil pump/cooler adapter, there is an output on it, to that hooks a hardline, that run straight into the top of the turbo. 3. where does the oil supply return to the engine? The oil dumps straight out the bottom of the turbo down a tube with a 90 in it, into the side of the head, down where the pushrod passages are, there is a hole, with a steel pipe sticking out of the head. 4. is there coolant passages? Coolant passage in the turbo? or too the turbo? Either way, the later (84's) and ones that have had the upgrade done at the dealer do have water cooling. The water comes from the plug on the underside of the head (passenger side) goes through a steel hardline, then a softline into the turbo, then out of the turbo into a softline, and into the T-stat housing. 5. what does the 2 wire senson on the heat shield do?, will it affect performance when disconnected? It is a heat sensor, turns on the electric fan. If you remove it, you will need to come up with another way for the fan to turn on. Like a toggle or sumpin. Hope all this helps.! -
I have to sing the praises of welded rear ends. But then again, I've been useing them for years, that was one of the first mods I did to my Brat back in 98. As far as a welded rear and and pavement, I dunno whot you guys are doing wrong, I run on the street every day to work and back (1.5 miles, lotsa turns). As far as offroad, oh yeah, don't leave home without it. One of these days I'm going to get either an LSD of just weld up the front diff!

can anyone id this hitachi?
Adam N.D.J. replied to archemitis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Looks identical to the one I just pulled off my 83 California smog automatic Brat. So I do have to say that it is indeed an EA81 Hitachi. -
Working towards a flush
Adam N.D.J. replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welp, I got my HO EA81 into the 83, fired up on the first crank (well, technically second, I had to flip the dizzy around, had it 180 out). Still have all the plumbing and stuff to do on it, but technically she runs!!!! I figure that with the built EA81 and turbo, it should equate out to about as fast (powerful?) as a 4spd EA81 Brat. Can't wait to drive her. I need to put up a shopping list in the marketplace, quite a few things that I need to get for her. -
a few Midwest Meet Pics...
Adam N.D.J. replied to mcbrat's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Just wondering, but did anyone air down? Or think to air down? When you get into sloopy stuff like that, and you need some traction in a hurry, flattening out the tire can make even the baldest tire grip pretty much anything. Prolly woulda sucked a little without an onboard air system among the group, but least woulda saved everyone a night out in the middle of nowhere. -
how do you lock the flywheel?
Adam N.D.J. replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There are a few ways, I prefer a MASTER, get a combo one though, cause keys are easy to lose. Seriously though, you can put a punch through one of the holes in the FW holding it against the bellhousing, a socket and rachet on the front pully nuts (which I usually use), or they actually make a tool specifically for holding flywheels, pretty much most tool supply places have em. Lotsa luck, -

Adam N.D.J. replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Actually it's not the bellhousing your after, it's the X-member. The 81's came with regular EA81's and D/r 4spd, but the X-member is the part that you want to get. -
Working towards a flush
Adam N.D.J. replied to Adam N.D.J.'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yayayaya, technically a "flush" is 5 cards of the same suit regarless of number, and whot I'm going for is actually a straight flush. Hehehe. Right now, I have either a full house: 3 brats and 2 coupes, or a regular flush 5 Subaru's. Ack, whot am I doing online this early in the morning!!! -
My stable just increased by 1, eastcoaster might not want to read further. Yesterday I picked up an 83 GL Brat!!! Oh ya, T-tops, sliding rear window, full guage cluster, AND a low topper in great shape!!!! Plus NO RUST!! On the down side, it had a blown motor, no compression, could turn the crank by hand with the plugs in it. No problem, I still have the hopped up EA81 that came out of the 82 last fall laying around. So I put new gaskets around on it, and in it went (still working on that though, motors in, just need to hook everything up). The other really down side, autotrans. But heck, I can trade that out with a 5spd! The body is a bit rough, dents here and there, needs new fenders, taillights, tailgate, hood, front and rear bumpers. How much would you pay for this little beauty? 2 thousand? One thousand? I know, 750? Not me, a single benji and she gets a nice trailer ride to my doorstep!!! So now I have an 80, 82 and 83 Brat, the hardtop makes and 84 so all I need is an 81 Soobie, and I've got myself a flush, not a royal mind you, would need two more Brat for that, but hey, I'm one step closer!!!!

Adam N.D.J. replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Or if you don't want to make or modify the X-member, you can get one from an 81 EA81 Brat, that will bolt right in and make it so you can bolt up the EA81 with no probs. The problem herein lies in the steering rack, the input is close in on the EA71 cars than the EA81, and the EA81 being wider hits the steering linkage. Other than that it's pretty straight forward, you gotta mess with the steering and axles a bit, but it ain't too difficult. -
I would get the head with the first picture checked out, only real way to actually check the whole head for cracks is to get it magnafluxed (local machine shops). The last 3 pics look alright, the single crack betwixt the valves is normal, there is actually a TSB out there. (sum1 want to link it?). That first pic though, if I'm seeing it right there are two cracks there, that could potentially be VERY bad, specially if it goes deep enough to where the metal between the two valves falls out.

1986 ea82T in an 83 turbo wagon
Adam N.D.J. replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
84-86 EA82 MPFI is the same system as the 83-84, think about it, Subaru does in no way like to make new parts, same goes here. The Dizzy is the same unit on the inside, plugs right into the EA81 system, all the sensors are the same too, if I remember correctly the throttle body is the same one bolted to a different intake manifold. I've thought about this many times with my 84 (that needs a motor), and it would be a simple as droping in the fully dressed EA82, plug and plumb everything and down the road you go. All that works good in theory Shadow, but in the world of mass produced vehicles, they didn't go threw all the trouble to do that, it actually took them 3 years to come up with the new system for the EA82's (the advent of the hot wire sensors marks this moment). I actually had an EA82 computer driving my EA81 for a little while, just for shi34's and giggles threw it in there to check it out, worked just fine, should work the other way around when it comes to the motor. and yet another reason I know this will work is one of my slow days while working at autozone I looked up parts and checked the differences between late EA81 and early EA82's. Bsides Miles, this should be no problem for a man of your abilities. -
Need 1988 GL-10 Turbo Advice (Turbo Itself)
Adam N.D.J. replied to mtsfabman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Now a lifted Off-road XT-6 would be way kewl, not to mention you would have almost more power than you could possibly need. If your looking for one, there is one down here in Medford at a podunk little car lot, body is kinda rough, cybrid power steering is shot, motor could use a good tune up but the air suspension works, and it drives pretty good. Guy is asking 1200 I think, but it's been sitting there over a month now, and if you showed him 7 or 8 hundred he'd prolly go for it. -
Sweet, good to see an old skool Soobie get some props at a car show. Last time I entered into a show, the guy taking the apps laughed me away. It was a Hot Rod and Customs show, not an import one, but still, thats beside the fact. N.e.ways, lookin good. I do have to ask though, whots with the pipes on the roofrack?!

Fuel injection conversion?
Adam N.D.J. replied to Numbchux's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not too hard if you can get your hands on a donor car. I coulda helped you out a week ago, as I had most of a FI EA82 sitting in my drive, but it went away yesterday. N.e. ways. You can go either way if you have an EA82, for TBI is pretty straight forward. Go to a u-pull it and get the whole intake off a TBI car, also get ALL the sensors off the motor, and the MAF. Then you will need mosto f the front wireing harness, and computer from under the steering column. Then it's just a matter of connect the dots from there. Cut all the other wires away from the ones from the computer to the engine. Connect all the inputs and outputs to the computer, supply power and grounds. Upgrade your fuel supply (there are a number of posts that hash, and rehash this, my way is add new supply, and use the old one for the return) A FI fuel tank will help out a lot, also you need an FI fuel pump (30-60psi running pressure on FI). A list of inputs include the MAF, Knock sensor (not sure if all EA82's have the oriface for it or not), Engine Coolant Temp (in intake), distributor (also an output) and O2 sensor. You will also need to grab the coil bracket outa the donor car (has the ignition amplifier on it). Outputs include: the injector, dizzy, coil (ignition amp), Idle air controller. There might be more, but no less than these. Also get real intimate with reading wireing schematics, and picking up a book on Fuel injection theory helps out A LOT. For MPFI, it's basically the same as above, except you WILL need the heads, along with the intake, the heads and intake are different (dual port). Lots of luck to ya, and if you need any help, lemme know. -

Need 1988 GL-10 Turbo Advice (Turbo Itself)
Adam N.D.J. replied to mtsfabman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, the EA81 turbo is smaller, but the nice thing about IHI's is that they are like Subaru's, they have that same lego like qualities. Whot you do is take the hot side of the EA81's turbo, bolt it too the cold side of the EA82's turbo, whot this does is give you a smaller exhaust impellar, and the same size intake compressor, so you will get a little more boost at lower RPMS. This is whot I have on my EA81T, The boost hits about 5psi around 1700 rather than 2200 with the stock turbo. Still this is nothing compared to the old NA motor that was in my Brat, serious torque at 1400 rpms, and nothing like the current motor, GOBS of torque at 1000rpms. When offroading, you want to torque to come in as low as possible, if you aren't making torque till close to 2K, then your wheels are gonna be spinning (if you can get them to move at all, in some offroad situations) way too fast anyways, and more than likely they are going to be just doing that and not actually moving the vehicle. All in all, if your going to use forced industion offroad, I would use a supercharger, it comes in at low rpms, it may have a slight parasitic drag off the crank, but so do turbo's. And for those people that think other wise about turbo's, take an NA moter and neck the exhaust down to 1" at the end of the Y pipe, for about 3"s then neck back out to 2.5" you will notice a serious loss of power. -
instrument clusters on ea81's

Find a shop that sells theater equipment, they have the filters that go over the stage lights to make them different colors (can't remember the name of them anymore, been years since I was on a stage, I wanna say cellulose). But that stuff is fairely thick, and with a heat gun you can shape it rather well into the shape of the old filters in the dash. -

PICTURES!! Sounds friggin sweet, but we NEED pictures, I for one definatly want to see how this beast looks. -
Caleb: Thats unusual?? I see em all the time round here, heck, the GL-10 I just sent to the crusher had a 5spd and air susupension on it. I do have to say thats it's pretty close to being an RX, but not quite enough. You could make yourself up a PsuedoRX, like I'm doing with my 84 Turbo, since we didn't get the EA81 RX's here in the states, I gotta make one.
