  1. A picture is worth a thousand words. This is where the odometer died on the Brat, over 5 years ago. It just stopped working, and hasn't budged since. I know I've put over 50K on it in the past 5 years. So it's somewhere between 350K and 400K. Of course the stock engine went not too long after the odo stopped, but I still have the motor in storage, still looks good, sure if I put it together it would run just fine.
  2. Yeah, you can find a lot of the fixes for stuff by clicking the button that says USRM at the top of the page. That's the Ultimate Subaru Repair Manual. Coos County huh? Far from Coos Bay?? I get over to the dunes usually twice a year. That Brat loves the sand out there. Gonna be out there for the Memorial Day weekend (as we do every year), I know it's a ways away, but your welcome to join us.
  3. Good deal, I hate that problem. I've got it on the Brat, right around 1/4 throttle, it'll start bucking and sputter, ugly. Only problem though is I can't find a TPS, or at least one that cost less than my origonal investment in the motor.
  4. There should be 4 wires coming out of the dizzy. 2 to the coil, and the other 2 are for the Knock system control unit. Open up the cap, there should be 4 prongs that the wires hook to on the pickup, on the plate under the rotor, you'll see at least those 3 going to it, sounds like one is altogether missing.
  5. Exactly whot Ken said. If you jump right into big stuff, you can have big problems. Plus you run into the problem of whot if you go too big and don't like it. I started out small, 2" lift, then when that wasn't enough, a 4"er, then finally the 6" lift. And I'm very happy there, if I had jumped right into like an 8" lift I don't think that I would be as happy. Also you do need to understand that there is a lot of trial and error your working with. Having built my first and last lifts, I had to do a lot of working and reworking to get things right. And Gen's 1's are a bit more problematic. Like the rear torsion bars (they are individually mounted) are mounted at angles to the body, not on a horizontal plane like the Gen 2's. Of course I for one don't want to push you away from this, I think it's a great idea. And WHEN you do get the Brat, and start the lifting process, drop me a line, I'll help you through any problems that you might have, ........ for a nominal fee, (j/k )
  6. Sounds good to me, I'm always up for a good wheeling trip. Specially now that I have the front end lifted, and new tires!!! And the new suspension pieces got tested out on Thurs, they survived one heck of a thrashing. Lets get muddy!!! There are plently of places within 10-20 minutes of Tony's or my house (not too far between the two). And I'm sure that Sean is gonna wanna go out and try the new (ahem) clearence. Yeah, get up here while the mud is good and sloopy!!!
  7. Welp, took her out wheelin today, put a good many miles on it, and got into some pretty heavy duty stuff. Couple times I had the Brat laying almost completely on the passenger side, put a lot of stress on the new strut extensions. Nothing seems to have broken, twisted, or come apart in any way. These of course are things you want to hear. Got into some good mud too, nice and sticky. Road handling is pretty much near stock, hasn't changed a whole lot, although now I can turn my wheels from lock to lock, without them binding on the body. Good thing, specially when wheeling. I can actually take sharp corners without haveing to go at it more than once. Of course if I really want to take a corner (like a 180 hairpin, such as on some good switchbacks we have up here in the mountains), then I'll just blip the throttle and the rear end comes right around. It's sure is fun steering with the gas pedal. Hope to have some pics up tomarrow or Saturday.
  8. If it could be made into digital video I'm in. VHS?? Whots that?? hehehe. I've still got a VCR, but it's not even plugged in, connects dust quite nicely though, it's more of a stand for other stuff than anything else.

  10. I finally got around to getting the front end of the Brat lifted up where it should be!!! It's nice, to actually be able to turn my wheels lock to lock, without them hitting on the body. I've got a little bit of a camber issue, but don't think it's too serious. Also got brand new tires on the front!! No more slicks. I'm going to get some pics as soon as I can scare up a digi camera. Looks good now. Although I left a little bit of the "Subaru Rake" in there, doesn't look right if it's completely level.

We don't mention the STX here on the board, mainly because most of us were sorely disappointed when the "Baja" came out, and it had NONE of the good points of the STX, ie supercharger, D/r tranny, ect.. Of course it's just a buick SC sittin on the intake of the SVX, that pic has been around for quite some time, I would, if I could come up with the cash to do it one day, like to really slap one of those babies on the 3.3L
  12. Sounds like nothing that I can't do, I'm definatly no stranger to the fabrication world. Hrm. It's basically just a thought I've got milling about on a project that I've been thinking of. I'll definatly keep it in mind. Although I may go a different route.
  13. The MR2 supers are really tough to find, specially if you don't want to drop a ton of cash on em. I do remember seeing pics of few years ago of an MR2 one on an ea81, with a side-draft carb, and an adapter to use the stock intake. Was pretty trick. As far as the SVX, it's a new beltless design. They use sub-atomic nanites, invisable to the naked eye to spin the SC.
  14. hehehehhehehe!! Kinda funny, I was actually looking around the net to see if anyone has done this before, as I have a few, ahem, plans for the future. Welp, this is one of the pictures I ran across. Glad to know I'm not the only one locked down here.
  15. I've got a lot of pics for you to check out here, go through the whole gallery, shows all the drivlines, tranny, mounts and whot not. Most people I talk to don't get it till they actually see whots going on under there. Kewl thing, the look on peoples faces when they see I have 3 shifter!! My picture gallery.
  16. Ohkay, been looking through the archives, haven't been able to come up with a definate answer to this. The question at hand is EA81 vs EA82 control arms. Are there any size differences, length, width? Do they mount the same? I've crawled around under my EA82, but haven't been able to really figure it out. Would it be really hard to swap a set of EA82 arms into an EA81 car?? Thanks.
  17. Sounds like a 4 speed. The Brat did that before with the 4 and 4, but now, it gets up there real quick, I mean REAL &*%$! Quick. I think I'm gonna take it out to the drag strip this summer and check the numbers. Last night, I blew the doors off some ricer that was messin with me at a light, it was ridiculous!!!
  18. My wifes Gen I Brat used to eat clutch cables, so I got quite used to driving it without a clutch. I used to have to do it so much that I didn't even have to think about it any more. Had no problems merging onto freeways and stuff. If I encountered a red light, or stop sign, I'd just kill the engine, shift to first, then start it in first. Those starts are tough, and extremely torquey, still have the same on it now, and it works just fine. Heck, if you read your owners manual it tells you that if the vehicle stalls in a dangerous situation, (like railroad tracks), to engage the starter while in gear to move the vehicle!! Don't believe me, look it up. (disclaimer, my vehicles are EA82's or older, newer vehicles may/maynot contain this information).
  19. Ohkay, I broke down and bought a new clutch for the Brat. Got it in today. That was a thrilling experience, there is a lot to be said about building an exhaust system in a car, without removing anything. I couldn't get the exhaust off without dropping the x-members. I have it wrapped in/around/through the engine, suspension, and tranny crossmembers, and when I built it, didn't really thing about how to get it out of there!! Anyways. I get the new clutch in it, and am bringing it home from the shop. Everything feels fine in the parking lot, way better than the old one, which was hitting the rivets on the clutch disc, it was so worn out. Hold way tight, burped the throttle a couple times and brought the nose way in the air!! I pull out onto the highway, 1st gear, hit 4K shift, 2nd gear, hit 4K and go to shift again, but this time I glance at the speedo before I do so: IN SECOND GEAR AT 4000 RPM I'M DOING 45MPH!!!! I'm in a 45 to begin with, and was getting ready to hit 3rd and take it up to 4 before hitting 4th, as I usually do in the same spot. Thats how much the clutch was slipping!! OMG, it's pretty insane. If I lauch it, it picks up the drivers side quite a bit, and usually chirps the tires if the asphalt is smooth enough. It's absolutely amazing. I think I was prolly losing around 50-60 horse from the slipping clutch!! WOW, I can't wait to try her out off road!! So remember kiddies, a new clutch makes a happy car!!
  20. Lawn??!! I've got a semi grassy patch of land in my front yard, which is currently occupied by my Brat, is that what that is?? Dude, don't let an EA81T get hauled off to the wrecking, get it!! If anything, you get your heads and stuff for your conversion, and if the block is any good. I sure would be mighty interested in it. (as this is what I need to get mine on the road again).
  21. Hmm, depends on which one your talking about. My 84 Turbo, well, thats a love/hate relationship, I love to hate her, she doesn't like to run, and when I get one thing fix, 2 more break, so it's interesting. The Brat (my first wife), we're inseperable, till death do us part. We've been together for 6 years now, and been through a whole heck of a lot. I've changed a lot in those 6 years, and the Brat has changed right along with me. The Wife's: 89 3-Door, good commuter car, gets where ever we need to go, with no problems at all. Doesn't require a lot of working on either. 80 Brat, fun to drive, but can't stay in it for too long. Really easy to work on.
  22. Don't forget that you need to change out the fuel delivery system. The SPFI works at pressures of 40psi and above. So you would need the highpressure pump, and to run a new fuel delivery hose. The Carb'd supply hose works great for the return. I'm not sure, but on an EA82 you may have to change out the tank for this to work properly. Lotsa luck.
  23. (TWB plug on:)If your getting a TWB part, then you know your gettin some good stuff. (TWB plug off:) Tony is the sh## when it comes to fabrication. If he needs a tool, he makes it himself. That right there tells you the quality. He just doesn't go down and buy tools, he invest Time And Money into his tools to make them himself!! I am extremely proud to have him in my crew, (also because he's insane enough to come up with some of the same idea's that I have as far as Subie's go. )
