I remember years ago when I was a young lad ready Playboy mag and seeing advertisements for Subarus. One model I'm sure was a 4wd two door DL1400 sedan about 1973-74.Am I correct or was my mind on other things. The ads for Subaru are about the only thing I remember in those mags(honest).Anyway can anyone enlighten me as to the two door sedan.Has anybody got one or know of one. Kevin

Don't panic about the rear door trim.I hope to start making tail door trim soon.Plan to make them in lots of twelve and I might have a cheap way of sending them over there. All I need is someone to post to and they can distribute the rest to other members. It won't happen overnight but it will happen (soon) Kevin

Wheels click when turning right

Sounds like either a internal or external CV joint. -
You had better believe it.It is extrmely awsome as we have the only 72 GSR on the road her in NZ.We have a 74 as well but haven't picked it up yet.The 74 model was different to the 72-73 models.Hows this for a twin carb 1400cc stage one cam with extractors from the factory and it is spec-ed at doing the quater mile standing start in 16.8 sec.Not bad for an old car. This car is where the high performance cars from Subaru started. There were other Subaru coupe models of the same area but didn't have the souped up motor. Yes that is a GSR.The one we have is in storage at the moment but we have plenty of photos. Will post them hopefully soon.Took two years to restore but we still want to be able to have spare parts.Where did the photo come from. They still look cool even today and when my son or myself drive it ,it still turns heads mainly because even over here people haven't seen one.Looking at the photo it looks like it has been coverted to 4WD. Thanks Kevin

Please, please doe's anyone know of any 72 - 74 coupes over there.I would love to have a left hook.

From NZ to US $175nz freight and I can make the panel for $75nz.I will try some other avenues to see if I can get the freight down.I would hope that group buying will get the price down.Early days yet plenty of leg work to do to make it viable and affordable. To buy a taildoor in NZ if you can get one will set you back about $200nz to $350nz.I priced second hand doors for my brat at $350nz and just about fell over backwards.
-
Had a quick workout and it would cost around $250nz to make and freight taildoor skins to the US.Is this to expensive or on target. Please let me know.

Well I'm almost convinced to start making after market panels myself.I joined this site in the hope of finding panels myself ,but it looks like everyone else is is the same boat.I am a sheetmetal engineer and can make the panels required to repair your deck.I am thinking very hard about going into production of taildoor skins and can even make full or half door skins as well.I have a thread on this page titled brat owners, have a look.Over the years I have made skins and panels for a wide range of vehicles. With the exchange rate you might surprised at the cost.If there is a good demand the more I make the cheaper It will be to manufacture these parts.
-
The chrome strip is actually stainless steel and I believe I may be able to help there as well.It all depends on demand.I am a sheetmetal engineer by trade and if there is the demand I can make a pattern and jigs to make the skins and the s/s strip. It will give me motovation to repair my own and I believe there would be a good demand over here. The US is a bigger market and with the exchange rate I think you will find the price will be reasonable.
-
Would there be a demand over there for tail door outer skins.Would the demand be small, big, huge, massive or mind bogling.Let me know I may have a solution.

I would be surprised if you can get it in the engine bay as the later motor is wider. But to help you with your problem maybe harder than you think. The shaft from your gearbox may not be long enough to reach the spline in ej22 motor. You may encounter clutch lining up problems and the bolt holes on the gearbox most likely won't line up.Your best bet is to find a subaru mechanic and have a adaptor plate made for your belt housing so you can bolt up to the ej22 motor. To be honest I'm not sure that what you want to do can be done but its worth a try if its what you want to do.If you are succesful I would be interested in hearing the outcome.Sorry I couldn't be more help.

To be honest the ea81 is probabaly the most reliable and strongest subaru motor to date. Not wanting to sound like I am putting done other sub motors but this is a fact.Ea82 engines are also great motors but were more complex. With simplicity you get reliability and that is where the ea81 wins hands down. It may be down on power and an old engine but they just keep going. Kevin

EA-82's, what can go wrong?
subGSR replied to danman9y's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
At the end of the day the subaru motor is just that. But if you look after it with regular oil and filter changes the subaru motors do last along time and are internationaly known for there reliability and long lasting qualities. But every now and then you get a dud and this happens with subaru as any other manufacturer. The ea82 is generaly a good reliable motor and if you do the requiered mantainance it will go for a long, long time. -
What causes that Subaru ticking?
subGSR replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I am just taking a stab in the dark here as we didn't get the loyole model in New Zealand but I think you will find its your hydrualic lifters if you have an overhead cam ea82 engine. These can be ajusted and renewed and will quieten the motor to how it should be .Because of the subaru design the motors nead just a we bit more TLC to keep them quiet than other designs. The longer you leave it the worse it gets.IT is a curable problem. Kevin -
Does anyone know if FHI in japan have an Email.I can't seem to find one anywhere.I have a postal address and fax number but would like an Email.

New to the club.Have spent most of the time on the older generation forum for good reasons.I have a 1972 Subaru GSR coupe which took two years to restore and is the only one on NZ roads.I also have a 1975 DL1400 four door sedan in storage awaiting restoration.Have a 74 GSR that I haven't picked yet(a bit rough) I also have a 84 brat and my wife has a 94 legacy.Looking forward to talking to members and getting to know fellow Subaru owners.

Oops my mistake.I was thinking of a ea81 silly me.You will have overcam and you can still get a grind done it will make a difference. We didnt get many ea81T models over here. Kevin

Rust problems, do you need panels
subGSR replied to subGSR's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
John The answer is not that I have heard.Your best bet is to find one that may be damaged but not at the rear end and cut the portion out that you need and replace in the rusted area in your wagon. Its not as hard as it sounds it can be done and after painting you would never know that a repair had been done.Sorry I couldnt be more help but there are hundreds of that model in wreckers yards over here. But I have just had a thought and I will contact a japanese car parts importer on monday(sunday US)and just see what I can do and it might be possible if the parts are available to send them direct to the US. subGSR replied to Kostamojen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No is the answer. The 1400 heads have the exhaust valves on the outer edge and the ea71 is in the center of the head as the exhaust is at the bottom ,you would have to change cams and I dont think that will work.I have a 1972 GSR coupe and I am interested was the coupe you got the motor from in good condition and where is it now.
