  1. 4,000 rpm with the 3at transmission gives you 67mph. These motors can run that 4k all day and if they are all maintained, you wouldn't need to worry about that impacting the lifespan at all. Short stroke ftw.

  3. I was too (surprised), believe me! It wasn't fun having a finite amount of driving time left trying to find a 24 hour Walmart lol! I'm thinking maybe it was the rpms, I remember it was a low mile junkyard find right? And it seems to me you always drove the tin can at lower speeds, 65, 70? The last two trips had the engine in the 3500, to 4k range and I think the age of the alternator just came in to play there. The sub and amp may have, too. And then there was the old battery which sounded weak at times. Who knows! That's all replaced now. The maxima alternator is great, 90 amps, there's always one on the shelf at the auto store, and it's cheaper to buy!
  4. It does nothing you would ever notice I imagine. It's not near any water jackets (the cracks) as far as I know, so no coolant leaks. I'm sure on the super intense scale it causes some type of compression turbulence though.

Went in and came back with Two batteries to make sure I had enough juice to make it home with no alt. Made it home. Returned one battery and swapped in a reman Maxima alt. Tin Can is happy again.   8. New battery and a fresh 1990 Nissan maxima alternator, the tin can is happy again.
  9. Made it home! Boy was I tired though. 500 miles roundtrip. Still can't believe I made it to that Walmart, stalling in the parking lot. The little guy got me there though!
  10. The tin can has gotten me stranded for the first time. Alternator went. Battery started dying 140 miles in to a 240 mile trip. Did an immediate Walmart Google search. Limped him 10 miles to the Walmart, driving at night with no headlights on Pennsylvania back roads. Died as I pulled in to the lot. Buying two batteries to make sure I get home.
  11. The only thing I'd like to put forth here is my opinion that the ea82 cars are never going to be worth much money, whether they're original or not. Not any time in the near future anyway, and doubtfully ever. The ea81 cars, and any subarus built before 1985 are going to go up in price as their rarity and desirability is there. The post 85 ea82 vehicles up to 1994? They were the first econobox basically throw-away cars subaru made imo. The styling is just like any other 80s Japanese car for the most part, there's really no exotic versions of those cars. The only cars from that generation I could see being worth money one day would be GL-10s and RXs. The regular GLs and DLs and Loyales? They're disregarded.

  13. Take that axle out and check the ends for play. I think it's the axle. I had one do exactly that to me.

  16. I like how the common consensus here is that we all know damn well that the ea motors make more noise than power at anything above 5k, but we've all had them above there. Well above. The 3.9 dual range will get the car to 42 mph in 1st gear. ;-)
  17. Happy to hear your little one is doing better! I feel that if you open the gearbox, you are going to discover many other little things that could use replacing that have nothing to do with what happened, just from ordinary wear and tear. I do understand how hard it is to get parts there though so I understand your careful precautionary idea. I still think it would be fine, based on the abuse I put my 5 speed through (and it was still working when replaced) but you will never have the "peace of mind" that you would if you opened it up to inspect. I wish you the best of luck with the job and finding parts.
