  1. Fixed my alternator, maxima alternator was sitting loose. Couple washers took care of that. Oil change with a quart of Lucas oil treatment and gear oil change in the trans with another quart of Lucas as well. Gear oil was still relatively clean but lots of bits of metal on the drain plug again. :-\ the 5 speed is still working despite the racket it makes though. Looking forward to meeting mr Loyale tonight as he iscurrently making his way down from Maine. Can't wait to see his Loyale and the chromed out motor in it!
  2. Sounds like an awesome journey, and looking forward to seeing the footage! Reminds me of my two trips across the country in my GL to burning man, NJ to NV and back The first trip was done with the car completely over-loaded and it was real rough on the car, but took it in stride. With over 1,000 pounds overall in the car in stuff and people, every little bump sounded like a small explosion and every pot-hole sounded like an atom bomb. Broke my windshield eventually and severely bent one of my rims. Surprisingly that's all that happened. That first trip was about 6,500 miles round-trip This was also on a car that barely ever saw any use. I bought it in 2012 and it had 46,000 miles on it. 46,000 miles on an 87 GL I bought the car, replaced and axle, loaded it up and drove it across the country and back. It waited till we all got back home safe and sound before the water pump fell apart (the very next day) That was roughly 6,500 miles in 2 weeks the 2nd trip was close to 11,000 miles in 2 weeks. Only problem on the 2nd trip was my radiator wasn't cooling efficiently so I hot-wired the fan to always be on. Awesome cars. I daily drive that car to this day and it now sits at 89,000 miles.

  4. Wow. ... Pics? Mine tried twice to burn itself down. Had to rip out one flaming alternator and on another occasion rip out the battery to keep some wires shorting
  5. I would love to read something about that myself too. I've never come across anything but maybe someone else knows of one.
  6. My weber GL is running fantastic while warm. I still haven't set the choke properly so when started cold I don't touch the gas (so as NOT to set the choke). If the choke sets the car runs too rich until warmed up. I get fuel starvation on left turns and the car will stall if it's not in gear during a left turn. Aside from that, it is fantastic. I've noticed some of my vac caps cracking already though so I have to get better quality ones. At some point I need to re-jet it though as I'm sure it's not the right ones and I actually get better gas mileage the MORE my foot is in the gas.
  7. It's a car from the 80s. It's not very safe. In low speed front end collisions the crumple zones work really well and absorb a lot of the impact but anything over like a 30mph hit is probably not going to be fun. Wear your seatbelt (AND lap belt if youre in a Loyale.)!
  8. I think he means separating the stub from the axle itself. There's no bolts. It's just pressed in, and pulls out. If it doesn't come out, it's seized with rust.

  11. Naru; I'm kind of leaning that way myself right now. I think I'm going to start with replacing the starter itself first with a remanned from Auto zone that I can get for free via warranty on one I replaced in my GL already. If that doesn't do the trick I'm going to look in to the ignition switch contacts and do a bit of searching on here about how to do that and where to attain the contacts. If THAT doesn't work then I'm probably going to just bypass everything with the relay trick in this thread. /threadjack
  12. How many amps is this circuit calling for while engaged? I'm wondering how a typical 30 or 40 amp relay is going to handle the massive amount of cranking amps the battery is going to be sending through it.....
  13. That looks to be the road I'm going to go down. Can I just get the relay at any auto parts retailer place? Just ask for a Bosch relay? Something specific?
  14. Thank you fox. Starting in neutral has been tried, doesn't work. Will try to get the car into a non start situation again (seems like with lots of accessory electrical load this is attainable) and try jumping the starter itself.
  15. To add: Got the car to a parking spot, shut it off, waited a moment and started it back up. Started up no problem. Did this four or five times. No problem. Then I shut it off and turned on the wipers, headlights, high beams, HVAC fan at full speed, and rear defroster, and the dome light, and tried to start it. No start (click). Held the key on and one by one turned the electrical components is, it eventually started. Shut it off and tried to start with no electrical load. It started again. Shut it off and tried with the rear defroster on. Wouldn't start. Held key to start and turned off the rear defroster and it started when I shut it off. Shut it off and tried to start it with no electrical load again. No start. Click. Click. That's when I started typing this post, about five or six minutes ago. It's been sitting with the key off. Going to try it now; On the thirteenth cycle of the key, it started. The other 12 were click, click, click.... Shutting off and restarting (no load); Started right up, first try. Repeating; Felt like a momentary delay but started first try. Again; Instant start. One more time with no load; Instant start. Starting with rear defroster on; Started right up. Starting with rear defroster and HVAC fan on high; 5 tries, no start (click!) Held key and shut both off; No start. Cycled key; Started instantly. Tried just now to start with just the HVAC fan on high and got no start. I'm done. Any ideas? This doesn't happen too often but when it does it's embarrassing for my girlfriend, and it's annoying as all Hell. :-\
  16. Well, sitting in the Loyale right now, where I've been for about half an hour. Won't start. Turn the key to on and the fuel pump primes. Turn it to start and the starter clicks, as does a relay either in or behind the fuse box, and the check engine light pulses a bit. Release, repeat, click. Click. Click. Usually after trying a couple times it will eventually turn over and start. Not so far this time. I do know for a fact that if somebody pulls over and gives me a jump, it will start. What's up with this and why is it so intermittent? Just started. After another round of about 7 cycles of the key.
  17. Pros: less knee fatigue Cons: there is no automatic transmission that bolts into your brat that doesn't sorta suck. If you only want 3 gears and a mpg hit and a 3800 rpm highway cruise at 65, then go for it. Otherwise, stick in a new clutch. Also, properly driven a clutch should last you hundreds of thousands of miles. There's no reason you should have to replace it again unless you own the thing for another... Many many years, or you burn it up prematurely.

Oh and a/c *should* have a cut off feature when you give the car more than like 50 percent throttle you'll hear a click behind the glove box that should be disengaging the compressor while you're foot is on it for more power, but yeah, air conditioning hurts 90hp lol. If you remove the clutch fan you can also reclaim a little responsiveness, just make sure it doesn't adversely affect your cooling (ideally it shouldn't)
  19. Most likely bad egr solenoid. If you search around here a bit you'll find info on how to diagnose the check engine light, though 9 times out of 10 it's a code for a bad EGR solenoid. I wired one from an 89 tempo on and it works great :-)
  20. Well, they'd bolt right in to the RX, however to put them in the nissan would take a lot of custom fab work and it'd be a shame to ruin a set of those seats as they are like unicorns in the wild... I wish I could come across a full interior of those cars. I LOVE those seats.
  21. With the 3 speed it wasn't drag limiting me, obviously, it was gear. I didn't have any left and these motors in stock form really start to gasp for air past 6,000rpms it seems. I've gotten my GL up to 106 and that seemed to be about all he had, though I was high up in elevation the carb wasn't tuned for so under ideal situations with a 5 speed spfi I'd wager you can hit 115.
