  1. Regardless of synchronized or not I've always found it ideal to double clutch and Rev match in to 1st.
  2. As always, excellent work. Hope that's the conclusion to this headache.
  3. Oh and tires! Make sure your tires aren't in bad shape. I really recommend trying to source another rim so you can mount a tire to it and have a full sized spare instead of the donut.
  4. Basic regular fail points; Belts, alternator, water pump, timing belts and components, and less so, oil pump, power steering pump. Make sure those are all in known good condition with relatively low miles on them and you should be OK. If you're running original alternator that now has like 200k plus on it, you might want to make sure you have a spare in the trunk lol As far as catastrophic failure like you mentioned a spin bearing it something, that's really going to come down to how well you know your car. Do you know there's really no reason for something like that to happen? Because I mean if the car has never been abused badly or run with low oil or no oil or old oil for a very long time, catastrophic failure is pretty rare id say under normal diving situations. I've driven my (then) 24 year old GL across the country 4 times. One thing I CAN say is replace your gear oil before you go. Your gear oil and your diff in the back too if you can. I did those trips across the county on the original 24 yearold 46k miles (only) gear oil and ruined my transmission. ITs still working somehow 2 years later but it's really noisy. All that being said look at it this way, if worse comes to worse and you do actually get stranded stranded, you can either sell it or scrap it and get a bus ticket. ;-) Hope it never comes to that!
  5. Just curious, what happens if you start an automatic while it's in drive?
  6. I think there's some frost on the a/c line. Think O/P is just showing off. X's 2!
  7. For the reverse thing, put the transmission in 1st before you go in to reverse.
  8. I don't know but that's an awesome story. Post up some pictures man!
  9. Also it's probably not AWD. Those are kinda rare. If you have a button on the stick shift or a lever you move to engage 4wd (2nd stick) it's 4WD not AWD and you need to make sure you don't use that 4WD on dry surfaces such as pavement.
  10. Check for vac leaks, make sure the exhaust isn't clogged at all, give us a little more info on how it runs all other times. Does it miss? Run smooth? Does it have good pick-up when you floor it on level ground? Can you run a compression test on each cylinder?
  11. Wow, play the lottery that day? haha I'm interested to see how this goes as my girlfriend's Loyale has done the same thing since we got it 5 years ago. I've jumped through a few hoops trying to figure it out but still haven't. It doesn't do it *too* often but it's annoying when it happens. Usually I'll just keep trying to start the car over and over again and eventually on the 50th or 100th try it'll turn over, but by then I've gotten so in to the routine of turning the key off and on quickly I'll turn it off while it's cranking and then the next key turn it's back to *CLICK* lol I'm not so sure it's the same issue though as I'm certain the click I get when it won't start is under the hood and there is no even slight attempt at engaging the starter motor. Just a click. Also! Are you ever around Hoboken? If you're in Jersey often we should meet up and take pictures of our old cars society shuns. Cheers!
  12. Does your dome light come on when you open that door or does the instrument panel show that door as being open? The belt will only go to the fastened position when it senses that the door is closed and the ignition is in the on position.
  13. Yeah the push button is the same thing. Don't use it on pavement. Lots of stress on the drive train if there aren't any wheels on low friction surfaces like mud or sand. Only full time all wheel drive vehicles are really meant for pavement. As far as engaging it, not sure on the push buttons. On my dual range I can engage it while rolling with my foot on the clutch. Even in to low.
  14. Hope it's not a paved road or you'll be working on another Subaru very soon! I've noticed the same thing, my girlfriend has a fwd Loyale and I have a 4wd gl . her car corners like it's on rails., I love how good that car handles. My GL is more like a truck though, lots of lean, not nearly as planted.
  15. Inner and outer. It's kind of a pain to get the inners off, if you're not afraid of a challenge I'd do them too.
  16. I put the weber on about a month ago. The first 2 wells it was so much fun I consistently ran over 4k shifts at WOT. I typically got about 85 miles to 20 bucks gas. Last week I granny shifted every day. Typically around 2500 rpm shifts with a feather light touch on the gas. I got 70 miles to that tank.
  17. Tach jumps when trying to start. I push started the car in 2nd gear today and it spent about 10 seconds bogging then about three minutes ruining rough while warming up. During this time I had clouds of light blue smoke coming out the pipe and it was so flooded with gas there were drops of fuel spitting out the exhaust. After it warmed up it was running fine though my idle was a little low. I'm thinking it may have just been flooded and having my timing advanced all the way to 20 degrees made it impossible to start. I'll see if it starts after work without touching the go pedal. The little run today confirmed Spark Fuel And timing.
  18. Oh I thought you are in new England area.... Whoops! Crazyhorse , back to you!
  19. Anybody wants to throw some suggestions my way that'd be cool. Car had been running fine aside from running rich when cold (still have to set the choke properly). Started this morning, ran for about 30 seconds, stalled out. Won't restart. Took a look at it after work real quick, I've definitely got fuel. I've definitely got spark off the coil. Rotor rotates while cranking. I have the clip on type distributor cap. I'm thinking either pass side timing belt or timing skipped. One thing of note; occasionally while cranking the motor will very abruptly just stop turning and my dummy lights go out until I let go of the key. If I try to start it again sometime it will crank again normally or it might just click and not turn. Will keep posted. It's always something :-\ lol
  20. Pushed it across the street to a parking spot because for the first time since I bought my car, it wouldn't start. :-\ will investigate after work.
  21. ... Are there any pictures of this DL? You're not that far away from me...
  22. Yep, the adjustment is under the plastic trim that surrounds the handle.
  23. Water-Displacement formula 40 (WD-40) that's exactly what it is designed to do.
