  1. Correct except your moving the plug wires clock Wise one position and then moving the distributor back. I've never tried this BTW lol, but it makes sense in my head and it's a non interference motor so it can't hurt. I really suggest using a timing light though to confirm.
  2. If you move each spark plug over one post, and retard the timing you'll have the setting your at right now (as far as it will go) but you'll be able to advance it further. Use a timing light. if it's like ea82 *thinking*...... on ea82 you turn distributor counter-clockwise to advance timing (from driver's side). If same holds true for ea81 I would imagine if you move each spark plug wire to the next counter-clockwise post and then crank your distributor all the way clockwise you would be nearby where you're at now with it fully counter-clockwise. Little complicated to explain but if you picture it all it'll make sense.
  3. I know I've seen posts on here before saying it's a real PITA. That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject, however.
  4. An EA82T being compared to a chevy 396. lol
  5. I do know that on my healthy auto in my Loyale, it has never ever liked manually shifting from 2nd to 1st while moving. Even at speeds as slow as like 5mph, it shifts very abruptly and rough, usually so bad that it chirps the tires. From 3rd down to 2nd has been okay though. Going up has always been smooth as well. Is yours shifting rough going up AND down? Or just down? Is there any possibility you can get somebody to take a video of you driving while you accelerate at Wide Open Throttle from a stop? Very curious situation.
  6. Jump the wire going to the compressor to the battery. You'll hear a click. If you don't hear a click the relay is not working. If you do hear a click it is engaged. While it's engaged, try to spin it. There will be resistance (less so if you take off the lines, but if it has a charge, you'll lose the charge and break some laws while you're at it) If it spins you're good. If it won't spin it's seized obviously. Make sure the belt is real good and tight. When I got my AC hooked back up I thought my compressor was seized because it wasn't spinning and the belt was sliding on it, but the tension that was good enough without the compressor on wasn't good enough with it on. Tightened the belt. AC worked. =) Good luck And nice job keeping it going! And thanks for supplying parts #'s for future reference for anybody trying to find a good timing belt kit!
  7. Man, if it's 300 bucks, you can't go wrong no matter what you do. You'll make that back in scrap if you junk it. timing belts like you said, water pump, good tune-up with NGK plugs. Check the suspension out, ball joints and such. Brakes maybe? Throw gas in it and drive it till something breaks that you deem to expensive to fix. Junk or sell whole or for parts. If you sell it for parts you might even *make* money.
  8. Can you take a picture of what ever that is where there's usually a cubby-hole in the less optioned cars? Directly behind the shifter, under the radio. 45 degree angle.
  9. From what I know (that's the easy way of saying I'm not sure and probably shouldn't even bother posting) I think the intakes are interchangeable. I'm pretty sure the main difference in the motors is the pistons and the compression ratio. SPFI is higher compression (9:1) and carbs are lower (8:1). I *think*
  10. i actually find this to be the exact case but with 2nd gear. Usually even barely rolling you can pop the clutch and it'll start doing the hurt dance until the motor pushes it to a smoother speed; but it starts. I like using 2nd because it seems less violent when I suddenly pop the clutch than 1st or reverse.
  11. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/146444-its-inevitablemy-weber-questions/ The links in my thread will lead you to everything you need to know. Quick run down, you have to have vac advance from distributor hooked up, brake booster, and HVAC.
  12. Weber install complete: Just for the record, leaving the asv lines open was causing me massive backfiring while shifting. Closed them up with the quarter trick and all is well. Very happy. Video was shot before asvs were blocked off.
  13. I have pretty much the exact same setup, except stock y resonator, no cat, and the same magnaflow muffler. I'm thinking it might be because my asvs aren't blocked off. Ill try that and post back. Sorry OP I didn't mean to hijack your thread
  14. Do you get backfiring from lack of back pressure? Is there still a cat? My car backfire a lot while going through the gears and I'm trying to figure out how to fix that
  15. Pass head hose goes to air filter. Drivers side goes to pcv. Tee in a small breather.
  16. If you have to lift your doors to open them, try opening the door and placing a jack underneath, raise it up a little bit. Lower it, check it, repeat if necessary. Be careful. Should work it up enough to with time.
  17. My brother duck taped and zip tied together his control arm and ball joint when the joint broke on his 68 mustang. Made it 150 miles home on it. Thought that was pretty good. Also he and I have both band aided CV joints with new duck tape boots that went for a good 1k miles or so. BTW love the log strut mount above. That's great.
  18. Just took it for a spirited drive on the highway. Aside from an intermittently hanging rear brake, all seems well. Is it normal for an ea82 to sound like a porsche at full throttle after a weber swap? I mean that's where the similarities end, naturally, but that sound...is phenomenal! It's a fantastic sound. It's proving very difficult to keep my foot out of that secondary barrel on the new carb.
  19. Oh and I was going to use the Hitachi cable plate but I found it easier to set up this one. Aside for my distaste for using a pinch bolt to hold my cable still, and after a little fenagling, it's working great!
  20. Black squarish box is an old aftermarket alarm system that was on the car when I got it. I made sure the wires were cut and have just left it there. Good spot to lean on when I'm working over there. :-P Positive battery cable has a 100 amp fuse. Part of stereo system. Asvs I've left alone. I just put filters on the lines so no crap falls down into them. I like the sound of them being open.
