so this happened...tread separation

Old tire, not to mention damaged as the rim it was mounted to had a slow leak and it was driven with barely any air in it, or flat a block or two a number of times. It was bound to happen. -
92 Loyale Won't Start After Sitting 2-Years
l75eya replied to grotto's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check your plugs. New ones will probably help. Or clean them. Might have fouled them all out. -
Haha, yeah, we've had it since 2010 and bought it with 52k on the clock. 1 owner car from the Bronx. Almost doubled in 4 years what it took the previous owner nearly 20 years to put on it . My 87 gl has only 79k and i picked that one up 3 years ago with 46k on it! 1 owner car from guess where; Staten island lol. Mike made a good decision. I hate it out here.

92 Loyale Body Moulding Hardware
l75eya replied to 92LoyaleH4's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sikaflex! I used that stuff to seal up the gps antennae installed on the roof of the nyc busses. There's a chemical remover they gave me to remove the stuff, works great. Aptly named sikaflex remover. -

Doing about 70 only 30 minutes away from Pittsburgh from Staten island. Very loud. I'll take pictures of the damage to the quarter panel later. Tire was a Goodyear viva. Bought it used, lasted about 10k. http://img819.imageshack.us/img819/111/hgm5.jpg http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/1046/pfe7.jpg

Probably alternator but seeking opinions
l75eya replied to l75eya's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Many good ideas here, I've been meaning to throw a multimeter at It, mine is just MIA momentarily. Never thought of that simple trick to check if the belt is slipping, thanks. Also gonna clean up all those elec. Connections this weekend. -
Probably alternator but seeking opinions
l75eya posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is about a 93 Loyale spfi fwd. Alternator was replaced with a remanned unit about 2 years ago. Car has always exhibited weak voltage with things like -fuel pump humming slower (i guess is the best way to put it) with each blink of the blinker when it's on -brake pedal also "slows" fuel pump when at a light, not as much as blinkers though Anyway, never really been a problem, but LATELY an inconsistantly it's been getting worse; now at night, when I hit the brakes while the headlights are on the headlights will actually pretty much go out for just an instant as the brake lights come on. The instrument panel lights dim as well, briefly, as does the clock. Sometimes the radio will even go off for a second (like it does if you have it on without the car running and then start the car) If I have a LOT of electrical things going on, I can make the car stall. I did it the other night in the rain. Headlights on, rear defroster on, windshield wipers on, sitting at a red light with the brakes on, and then I put a heavy load on the electrical system by turning the blower on to full speed. That made the car stall. Starting in the morning, battery sounds strong. I should mention the battery was replaced as well, just about a year ago. Sometimes, none of these things happen and everything is good to go. Plan on making an 800 mile round trip out to pittsburgh in this car in 2 weeks so I thought maybe I would seek some opinions on something other than the alternator possibly being at fault. If I can't replace the alt by then and you guys think that's def the problem, I have my Maxima alternator in the GL I could swap in for the trip, maybe. I should also mention that about 3 or 4 months ago on a trip in the car to Pennsylvania there was some circuit consistantly blowing out my instrument panel lights and all tail lights in the car(the FUSE for those lights. Not the lights themselves). Only lights that wouldn't go were headlights. I narrowed that down to the license plate bulb shorting out against something and have since just removed that bulb and haven't had that problem since. Related maybe? That's why I'm posting! Thanks for the look! -

Steering boots and Strut Failure
l75eya replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know about on a manual rack, but on my power steering rack you remove those dust boots by removing the outer tie rod and then if you look there are metal spring like things around the rubber. Remove those and you can slide the boots off. Also on my rack the inner tie rods thread in to the rack. There's a metal plate bent around the end to keep it from backing off. Punch those plates out of the way, grab on to the inner rod as tight as you can with a wrench and it unthreads. About the strut, i had the same problem when i did mine. I wound up having to go get a garage to remove it with an impact. You may have luck using a drill with a socket on it. -

Let me tell YOU guys about rust. Salt every winter. Rainy summers. I live .5 miles from the Hudson river and just a little more from the Atlantic Ocean. My car spent 3/4 of it's life on Staten Island. I have a rear axle stub so stuck in the axle cup from rust it has broken various tools while trying to remove it. (I *still* haven't gotten it off) To separate a ball joint I spent almost half an hour beating on the control arm with a sledgehammer. axle nuts, lugnuts, shock tower bolts, brake caliper bolts, fuhgeddaboutit. =P I broke 5 breaker bars in a row once on a mercury villager axle nut. This place sucks. -
The Awesome Older Generation Picture Thread

Loving these pictures rust. Specially the blue one with mirrorless doors, fender mirrors, AND the incredibly rare window deflectors. Thing is sweet. -

If it's on incorrectly the axle nut will slowly loosen and you'll get front end slop. I don't understand how the OP didn't notice the axle nut was loose before it finally just came off and he lost his hub. I'd imagine there would have been some cues lol. -

"Somebody will correct me if I'm wrong though." See? Haha! If they are original, i don't think they have any words stamped. I've gotten new ones that did say out though.
