  1. I've found out that the OEM amounts of r12 for our cars varied from 28 to 30 ounces of refrigerant. All my pressure readings were with the a/c on max with the engine running. My pressure readings are varying, and that's what I'm asking about When the system is first turned on, I get high pressure readings on the low side. 45-55 PSI. After about ten minutes that pressure reading is down to 25-30 psi and it's always around those pressures that my compressor turns off. Forgot all about the sight glass on the drier. Wiped that off and checked it out. Lots of bubbles. My high side lines are also getting pretty hot. I've read conflicting reports that high side lines being hot is a result of there being too much pressure in the system or too little pressure in the system. I've read also that bubbles in the sight glass definitely means to little pressure, so I'll be buying and adding another can to it soon and will report back.
  2. That would be fun to try and do while taking it for a test drive =P
  3. Is your electric fan (pass. Side fan) turning on when you engage the air conditioner?
  4. I'm using the crappy little gauge that comes with the refrigerant cans. I'm wondering if somebody with worKing a/c can check the pressure of their low side line(refilling line) at idle with compressor running and report back how many PSI it measures at. Mine is reading 45psi right now. Waiting for the compressor to turn itself off to report pressure reading at that time.
  5. All are helpful and informative suggestions. Didn't know about the temp sensor behind the dash. Okay so, the a/c works again. All on it's own. My only issue now is that it cycles on and off pretty frequently. Sometimes when it cycles off it will remain off and the only way I can get cold air again is if I disengage the air conditioning, and then re-engage it (either by turning the thermostat off and then back to a/c, or switching from a/c to heat, and then back to a/c) Could I ask by any chance if you know how much pressure your system has when it is running at idle? in PSI? Thanks for all the replies SmashedGlass. Your thread about your own a/c has turned into a very helpful thread for others as well.
  6. Positive miles meant 'oil pump' there. Probably typing on a phone.
  7. What kinda gas are you using? 85? 7? Maybe it's not ticking but pinging. Try 93 octane gas and see if it is still doing it. Check your timing too.
  8. Okay I've got New o rings in place. The a/c worked beautifully for about ten minutes. Now I've got warm coming out of the vents. The compressor doll it's running. I checked the pressure Witt a gauge and got nothing. Checked the high pressure line and its got plenty of pressure. If I let it sit for awhile slowly the pressure comes up on the low pressure side. Any clues? Forgive any typographical errors I am Swype ing on my phone.
  9. So all your belts are doing is spinning the alternator right? lol and it's a dual belt set-up! lmao That's a nice looking engine compartment. Nice looking quality belts too, btw. What brand are those?
  10. That actually sounds pretty fun/funny. =P Good luck hunting the problem down though.
  11. To just replace the rear shocks should take no more than 20 minutes. As mentioned above. If there's a stuck bolt add 5 - 10 minutes to heat said bolt. IIRC it's like...3 bolts. Two at the top, one a the bottom. Tell the shop that and then tell them to go do something to themselves. KYB GR/2s (I think they are called) are the OEM replacement I believe. I have them on both of our L series cars and they are great.
  12. Ugh, had posted here last night but my phone must not have gotten the message through: Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I got my compressor to engage! Funny story, The blue wire pictured is somehow a remnant from my OLD compressor. The original one. I swapped in the compressor out of our 93 Loyale about 2 weeks ago and apparently IT'S 12v wire was laying hidden under my air filter box. That's what I get for swapping the parts out in a parking garage at night with no flash-light. So the good news is that the compressor works and it will blow cold air when I charge it. The bad news is the system doesn't hold a charge. I found one leak right at the coupling on the driver's side on the front of the condenser. That most likely just needs tightened. I don't, however, know anything about replacing the o-rings and that brings up the question: Where can I get the right O-rings now that the coolant is 134a? And how many of them do I need to replace? Forgive me if this has been answered already, I just wanted to throw that out there, I'll read through this thread again and see if there's any hint to that.
  13. From jumping 12 volts to the clutch and using a fresh ground and having the clutch STILL not engage, I'm leaning toward the only possibility being that the solenoid inside the compressor that engages the clutch is itself bad. Anybody ever dis-assembled one of these compressors before?
  14. That's a bummer about the gauge. Also a bummer it's keeping your from rolling around in that awesome little machine. Good luck.
  15. How exactly did you test your compressor clutch directly? I've been trying by wiring 12v+ directly from the battery to the stripped blue wire on the left. Nothing happened. Front of the compressor still spun freely (the part with those tabs sticking out) Then I tried supplying 12V to that wire and grounding out the ground wire. Still nothing. This is the second compressor I'm trying this on, and this one was known to work as of 2 years ago. Anything I might be missing?
  16. Might want to ask general tech questions in the general tech forum instead of on your build thread. Will get a little more traffic there, I think. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forum/4-old-gen-80s-gldlxtloyales/
  17. And two videos of extremely high visual quality. http://s15.photobucket.com/user/l75eya/media/VID_20130606_204639_zpsb75224f9.mp4.html http://s15.photobucket.com/user/l75eya/media/VID_20130606_205558_zpsc3bec172.mp4.html
  18. Maxima alternator installed New driver's side caliper New driver's side axle Slowly but surely.
  19. wow, There is a crap-ton of stuff happening to this car all at once lol! What kinda tyres are those? They look like agriculture type tyres. *edit* whoops. Maybe I should read everything first. Kinda like Apple end user agreement, skip, skip, skip agree. =P
  20. For a 1,000 watt sony xplod amp I installed I used 2 gauge wire for the hot and the ground. I used 10 gauge speaker wire. Run the power on the opposite side of the car than any other wires. 60 amp fuse at the battery.
  21. anybody ever go play in the sand without covers? Thoughts on that?
  22. Miles touched on a good point; Does the noise occur no matter what frequency you're tuned to on the AM band?
