  1. Unrelated to the 2wd/4wd mounting positions, what I *can* say is I threw in the kyb gr/2s if I recall correctly. They are awesome and modestly priced.
  2. I need those too! They're the plastic clips that hold the door mouldings on. It's got a little expanding bit that pushes through a hole in the door and holds it in place and then the black moulding on the door affixes to those plastic tabs. I would love to know where to get a few!
  3. 2wd imprezas actually do pretty good in the snow if you air down the front tires to about 15 PSI. Little tid-bit.
  4. Looks like that's in the queue now then. Couldn't hurt to change the gear oil anyway. Thanks again for the ideas
  5. Okay, a couple of new findings, trying to post up everything I can to help you guys help me The rattle does not make itself evident in 4th or 5th gears. As I mentioned before, the rattle will occur while stationary in neutral with my foot off the clutch. If I push in the clutch, the rattle will slowly dissipate, like pushing in the clutch ceases motion on whatever it is that's making the noise and it slowly freewheels itself until it stops. Now; If I push in the clutch and then attempt to put the car in to 1st, 2nd, or 3rd gear, the rattle will abruptly stop. Also, with light pressure on the shifter it is only until the rattle stops that it will actually go in to 1st gear. I've also noticed that it has been popping out of 1st gear lately, though very rarely. As mentioned before, I'm not too knowledgable in this area, so excuse my ignorance but my gut wants to throw out synchros?. But if that's the case, why only 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Maybe because they are the most used gears driving around town? Lots (LOTS) of speedbumps, stop signs, traffic lights, and dumb-asses in my town.. Food for thought. Either way, it doesn't seem like it's something simple =\ Till we figure it out, I'm rattling on.
  6. I had my reservations about posting this for this reason. Sorry to spook you. I knew it would be interesting to read the comments this got though. Never would have known that was an '80 model year. I agree with Shawn though, this is probably the least likely possible collision you'll ever have if you're a safe driver, barring catastrophic failure/hand of god/invisible then suddenly visible big cow directly in your path.
  7. And so long as you don't have to replace 62 and a half cone washers, you'll never be out $1k Good luck with the repairs.
  8. Thanks for the insight, I haven't quite grasped for myself how exactly everything works through the drive-train and that explanation both makes sense and clears it up a bit for me. Would there be any way for me to be certain that is the issue? The only way I'm thinking there could be is to drop the transmission and check out the condition of the input shaft itself. The rattling is very, for lack of a better way to describe it, bouncy sounding. It sounds a little bit like a percolator coffee pot, steadily making noise and occasionally catching something and making a bit more noise very briefly and then going back to it's steady rattling. Either way, thanks for your advice!
  9. From what I've been told, it seems my 87 5 speed D/R GL may be developing a bad throw-out bearing. I was wondering if the gurus here think these are the correct symptoms; rattling noise (loud) coming from front of car. Center. It will rattle if the following conditions are met The car is in neutral with the clutch pedal in it's normal position (not pushed in) The car is in gears 1 through 3, clutch engaged or disengaged. If I'm stationary with the car in neutral and the clutch pedal fully depressed the rattle goes away. If I'm in motion and I put the car in neutral and fully depress the clutch pedal the rattle still goes away, but takes longer. I'm not quite noticing any rattling in gears 4 or 5 but that just may be due to road/wind noise interfering. What do you guys think? If it *is* the throw-out bearing..is it something that really needs to be addressed quickly (ie will it lead to other failures if not corrected) or can it wait until my clutch wears out (which may be awhile).
  10. 40 mph front impact. Don't watch this if you have one of these... =\....it doesn't do very well.
  11. Just for your information, our Loyale took a similar hit in the front, punctured the radiator, bent the supports, etc. We ran the car for a week with no fans (clutch or electric) with no problems really. If sitting in traffic for a bit or at a very long stop-light, the temp would creep up but never enough to cause concern and I'm sure if I had to throw the heat on to lower it, that would have done the trick. This isn't to say you should throw caution to the wind and drive your car with no fans. I'm just saying in a pinch you can do it for a bit and it should be alright. Get yourself an electric fan on ebay if your fans got broken. And keep an eye on your temp gauge in the mean-time!
  12. Sony Xplod 1,000 watt amp Dual 12" woofer Some cheap prefab enclosure My mirrors now shake.
  13. Thanks! I've actually put an average 10,000 miles a year on the car the past two years, but each of those 10,000 miles were condensed into a tight period of time lol. She had 42k when I got her and she's up to 68k now, so maybe a little more than average. Last year was a 5,000 mile rountrip and this year was a 7,800 mile roundtrip because of more time to travel different places. It was a blast and the car just runs perfectly. They're Bridgestone's all around and they're the stock size, plus a full size bridgestone spare. They're alright so far, I haven't gone through a winter with them yet (last year there was NO! snow. I was pissed. Got a 4wd subaru and NO SNOW!) I really don't push the car very often though, the axles need replaced so if I drop the clutch and floor it they click...so I don't do that (at least not until they're replaced ) It's also nothing like our Loyale either in terms of handling, so I don't throw it around turns either. They're lasting a long time though, so I have no complaints. Quiet too. Thanks for looking!
  14. What's with everybody getting these 3-doors. I want one *so* bad but they are nowhere to be found on the east coast. Congrats on that buy! Hope it doesn't turn into tractor pole's $200 winter car has turned into an obsession. =P
  15. Luggage rack painted. Cat cut out. Straight pipe welded in. Stock muffler cut out. Magnaflow muffler welded in. Front bumper taped off and hit with a coat of paint tonight. Sanding and more coats tomorrow. New windshield. New windshield wipers. Inspection sticker. Shallow Pioneer speakers self tapped into front doors. Sony X-plod head-unit installed.
  16. Removed the luggage rack and am currently in the process of repainting it. Tomorrow, new Pioneer shallow speakers for the doors and masking off the bumpers and painting them, too. Pictures tomorrow! Also, now that I think of it, does anybody know how to remove the hard plastic stripe on the fenders/doors/rear quarter? Not the wide plastic/rubber trim that says Subaru on it on the gl's or Loyale on it on the Loyales, the thin one that is about a foot above that. I think it was a GL thing, haven't seen a Loyale with that trim.
  17. Don't you have to worry about fumes if you're in the bed with the engine running? An electrical heater of some sort seems like a good idea, maybe with a battery tender hooked up to the battery as well. I know nothing of camping/campers though, I imagine there's a wealth of solutions.
  18. The front end looks great. How does a door get bent like that, wow. I need to learn how to weld.
  19. Next is a couple of pictures from the Grand Canyon. I was able to watch a thunder/lightning storm makes it's way across the canyon. It was incredible. My father; And randomly, this is what our little cars look like parked in an MTA Bus Depot's parking lot in the bronx, surrounded by Nova series and Orion series buses. Thank you for looking!
  20. Time for the addition of a couple more pictures from the gigantic road trip this car accomplished for us pretty much trouble free. This guy was outside in the parking lot at the hotel in Reno; So naturally I had to go fetch mine from the parking garage for an impromptu photo shoot; He looked to be a very basic run of the mill GL. Surprised he wasn't a DL to be honest. Here is a look of what your vehicle will look like after being subjected to the dust-storms of the Nevada desert for a week; Not me. My good buddy Alex. And then a bath! That was important so as to wash off the alkali dust from the desert as well as all the salt from the Bonneville Salt Flats.
  21. The only thing missing in that response was "But wait! There's more!". I'm sold. Picking up the next set I come across in the store. Tired of sitting a can in between my 4wd and e-brake levers only to forget it's there, park, yank the e-brake, and have the can fall over.
