Whether it's normal or not, I don't know, but we have a 93 Loyale and it does the same thing. It doesn't really bother us though because the Loyale gets babied and is never driven until it has warmed up. I know it's warmed up when the computer kicks the idle back down to normal after starting it; usually takes about 5 minutes.

Where's the fun in that?

wow, it looks like a lot of time went in to that flatbed! Gotta go load up on firewood soon then eh? haha Might I inquire your source for those rear boots? -
I really do wish I knew! It's such an odd way for a grill to be broken, it was like that when I got the car =\ You can't see it too well but the thin black horizontal bars; one of them has like a semi-circular chunk taken out of it as well. Can't even imagine how it occurred. Thanks for taking a look at the pics though! I will have many, many more of them soon from the entire trip. I'm thinking I'll post my favorites and then just create a photobucket album and put a link to it on here. The trip went from New Jersey to Colorado to Reno, Nevada to Las Vegas to Arizona (flagstaff, phoenix, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam) to New Mexico, back to Colorado and back east with a stop in Pennsylvania and finally back in New Jersey.

The Awesome Older Generation Picture Thread

Bonneville salt flats. Kinda a bummer because there was an event going on so I couldn't get to the straights, but I got to have some fun on the salts anyhow. Salt is great for rust by the way (two days later a part of my quarterpanel that was previously pretty rotted was now gone. Got it very thoroughly washed and undercarriage powerwashed after that) I like the last picture because you can see my entry point *and* the diameter of my donuts It was fun. After that we hit the trails into the mountains, but I don't want to clog up the picture thread so when I get home (next week. In Arizona right now) I will write up and include pictures of my whole trip in my members rides thread. -
my 1,000 miles round trip

Will do when I get home. Simply just don't have the time to wait for a radiator to get somewhere while I'm on the road =\ -
my 1,000 miles round trip

Glad to see others taking on long trips! I know all too well about climbing the mountains in 3rd and being passed by semis. I'm actually in the midst of my burning man road trip with my best friend and the g/f. NJ to Nevada. Burning man is already in the past though and today was the beginning of the trek back home. So far I've put 4,100 miles on the car since August 20th with no driving from the 27th to the 3rd. Now I'm in Vegas and heading out to the hoover dam, the grand canyon, and then a stop in Denver, and then back to NJ. Wish I wasn't having cooling problems though. Going to flush the radiator soon and hope that takes care of it. 4,000 + miles and an average of 27 mpg heavily loaded! -
Thanks thanks! That's the g/f. Keepin it real, myspace style =P The Flying Magpie has gotten myself, the g/f, and my comrade safely to Reno NV. 3,300 miles in 6 days. Smoking issue I mentioned earlier must have just been something caught on the cat. That hasn't happened since that day. Cooling issue is still...an issue. Has to be a clog in the radiator somewhere I think. Temp gauge creeps up to 3/4 when the engine is under a heavy (maximum) load. Naturally it's much more prominent when it's hot out, the ambient temperature has been around 95 degrees during the day and I can in no way drive faster than 70 without it being at 3/4. At night I can do steady 75 but if I hit hills etc it climbs right back up to 3/4. That has got to be addressed before heading out after burning man. Used a quart of oil across the country. Averaged 25mpg I think but being as I just got here, I'm going to sleep now and I'll figure all that out later. Pictures later as well. OH! Got to drive on the salt flats and up into the mountains. Got stuck twice. I've got some awesome shots I can't wait to get up here.

Took a trip up in to the Colorado mountains. Damn, this place is beautiful. Loving Colorado. Some pictures Great place to stop and investigate the cause of a bit of smoke. Either something was leaking on to my catalytic converter (all fluids are full, can't see any leaks...) or something kicked up and got caught on it and was smoldering a bit. Smelled like a burning clutch, but clutch wasn't slipping at all, trans shifts smooth. Don't know what's up with that. It seems to have subsided but I haven't done any lengthy driving since yesterday, so I guess we'll see when I get back on the highway. Aside from that, and only being able to do 30 - 40 mph up the mountains, all is well with the magpie!

Update: In Denver. Car ran great the whole 1900 miles so far. Do have a bit of a cooling system issue, now I see what you guys are always talking about with the cooling systems being a little bit inadequate, through Nebraska with 91 degree ambient temperatures she was running a bit hot doing 80 mph constantly. Had to take it down to 65-70 till the sun went down, she's still running a little hot though, might have to get it flushed before I continue on the way to NV. Clutch is hanging on. P.O really did a number on it, it's way more worn than it should be with only 60k on the clock. (Oh yeah! I hit 60k!) She's averaging....27.0 mpg with a high of 29.50 and a low of 24.53

Update from the road: The flying magpie and I and the gang are in Indiana, en route to Denver. She is running like a champ, 713 miles in to the trip only stopping for gas and the bathrooms. Gas mileage is increasing, was getting 26 mpg to start, up to 29.50 with quite a bit of weight and over the mountains. Trying to stick to 70 mph, but have hit 75-80 here and there. Loving the drive.

I'm in the same boat with the cone washer deal. I scored one off a loyale I grabbed a hub off of last week (the ONLY loyale in a junkyard in the entire state of NJ.) It was in decent shape. I do need to go to the dealer and order some of them though. Good things to have before they're all gone. Tried shawnw @ retro-roo. He hasn't gotten back to me. Maybe he's busy, perhaps I'll try sending him another note here soon. Good luck in the hunt!

So all new hub+bearings on the driver's front corner and new exhaust manifold gaskets... The magpie is quiet and I no longer have to slow down quite a bit on the highway to take turns. My car.....is now a normal car! Can't believe how different the steering feels and what a gain in power with proper back-pressure. Lookin forward to the trip to NV _Edit_ Linked is a video to how the Magpie sounds now. No longer excruciatingly loud! Now just slightly loud! http://s995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/perpetuallynumb/?action=view¤t=VID_20120816_130406.mp4

New wheel hub and bearings front driver's side. Car seems to be trouble free! Knock on wood! I was going to replace the exhaust manifold gaskets myself, but naturally the last stud I was trying to remove was stuck, and I was not going to chance it snapping so I brought it to meineke today and had them finish the job. That left me with one day of having a car with basically no exhaust system hooked up to the manifold and of course I took videos of that because it was unGODly loud. The first video I tried to take didn't work, and I wound up driving around for a minute or two thinking the camera was off. The second one is my second attempt and you hear 2 or 3 full throttle pulls. http://s995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/perpetuallynumb/?action=view¤t=VID_20120814_185837.mp4 http://s995.photobucket.com/albums/af77/perpetuallynumb/?action=view¤t=VID_20120814_190504.mp4 Loud. But now it's quiet!

+1 Mobil 1 filters are my choice for oil filter. Ripped apart the hub on the GL, driver's side. Got a hub out of the ONLY subaru gl in a junkyard in NJ. It was a red Loyale wagon. New grease and bearings in the donor hub, slapped that on the car. New exhaust manifold gaskets. I have videos I'm going to link to in my members section thread of what the car sounded like open header for a day... Nice and quiet now though. Going to delete the cat when I get back from the west coast, it's leaking. Donor vehicle: Not sure if the donor vehicle was a GL or a Loyale actually. It had a Loyale style steering wheel but the trim on the doors says SUBARU instead of LOYALE. All I know is that it has cruise control, and I need to dig up some threads to figure out what I need to take to get it out!

That's such an awesome color.. -
Beautiful car, my friend! I really do love how you have managed to gain some storage space under the hood, and adapting the original air filter assembly to work with the weber was a GREAT idea. I, personally, don't much like the look of the stock weber filter either. Nice ride!

Hate that damn code... Glad you got yours gone. Hope it stays that way. Gotta take care of that on the Loyale =\

Anyone have 87-88 A/C section of the FSM?
l75eya replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Any word on what ever happened with your a/c smashedglass? I'm trying to get my A/C working as well, my compressor clutch is not engaging. When I got the car, hitting the a/c button would do absolutely nothing at all, not change in RPMS, or anything I got one of those conversion kits and when I started filling it up with the a/c on, the engine kicked up it's RPMS on it's own, but then lowered em' back down. Now when I turn the a/c on the engine rpms go up for about 5 seconds, and then it drops back down. It will repeat this each time I hit the button from off to on. The compressor clutch does not engage through this entire process. Any advice? Was your system just low on pressure? Sorry to semi-threadjack, I'm in the same boat though; It's HOT out
