Concerning a vehicle in the classifieds here with a bum transmission.... It is an 86 gl-10 air suspension auto transmission.. The auto in this means it's an all wheel drive version, correct? Anyway, the tranny has issues and I'm wondering if it's possible to either; A.) Swap in the 3AT from our 93 loyale FWD... Would it be possible to swap this transmission in and just remove the driveshaft and leave the car as front wheel drive for the time being. Is this feasable? I understand the front axles from the loyale would need to be swapped as well as they are 23 spline in an automatic FWD loyale, and 25 spline in a turbocharged AWD gl-10....or B.) Swap in the dual range from the 87 GL.... This seems like it would be the easier route, but is there any wiring issues I would run into going from the carb'd GL into the turbo MPFI Gl-10. I understand I would still be facing the axle issues in the front. and I would have to swap in the 87 GL's rear differential/axles as well as the GL-10 had a different gear ratio? Or maybe I could just swap it all in and use the car only in FWD mode for the time being... (not sure if that would work) And would the axles from either of the above cars be compat. with the air suspension in the GL-10? the opportunity to get this car kind of came last minute and there is not much time to act on it, hence the desperate questions. Thank you a million for any/all info

I found a N/A loyale dyno run video

I say go for it!! Make it a bet. Tell them that if it makes less than 70 WHP you don't have to pay. =P -

I have to admit that the thing *was* a trooper. Even with a completely blown headgasket I drove it 10 miles to a junkyard smoking and overheating and sputtering along the whole way. The turbo ones had to be quick, such a light car. if it had a 5 speed in it, I would have fixed it. Ugly as sin though. Oxidized teal paint...not pretty haha. Wish I had a dyno around here...the Loyale is very well maintained, I'm sure he has to make more than 65 whp, he is very strong. The GL not so much, that car needs a tune-up something fierce and I'd be surprised if she has 50 whp -

I think the Loyale is the only one of the cars I've had that has never hit 100 mph.... Oh wait, no. I had a 1993 dodge shadow that also only had a 3 speed. It couldn't hit 100 either. Though the Loyale can't only because of it's gearing. The shadow couldn't because it was a god-awful car. Don't miss that thing at all... -

The only good thing that comes from only having three gears is that on the highway, cruising at 65, when it comes time to accelerate the car is already well in the torque band so you just put the pedal down and it pulls pretty nicely. Then you pass the car you wanted to pass, you're now doing 75 and the engine is at 4800 RPM and you gotta slow it back down.... haha, the 3AT makes things interesting. -

Looks great with the digi clock on there haha. think I'm sold on this idea. Good luck getting that amp and sub hooked up to your stock head-unit. I commend that idea as well. The stock radio is just too charming lol. -
Ordered. Thank you for the info. Bratrod if you need those washers as well and would like to source them, they listed 4 available, I purchased 2 (on rockauto). Heads up lol.

What kinda axles are you using? And don't mean to threadjack bratrod, but real quick, where can one ascertain those hardened washers (they are the concave ones, correct?) Are they avail through the dealer?

Think I have finally solved all of Ben's coolant leak issues. Knock on wood. On a side note, some air pumping up through the oil filler neck with the engine running is normal, right? No smoke, no real powerful scents; just about 1/4 of the quantity of air that would come out of the exhaust pipe is coming out of the filler neck with the cap off and the engine running. Pretty sure that's normal..could use the reassurance though

That's pretty nifty! I like it. This would be better suited for jailbroken itouch/iphones though as if memory serves me correctly, you can only view the spring-board in it's vertical orientation and not horizontally. Don't remember too well what it's like using the music player, however I'm sure that if it's jailbroken you can just go ahead and get another music player loaded on there if it's bothersome enough. How easy is it to wedge it in there and get it out? Might just do this... I'd be able to set the itouch up with an app to throw a clock on the screen when idle for a minute or so too! That'd be sweet. Great idea! -

Hahaha! That thing is probably going like 50 MPH and the driver is in there all serious and attentative. Don't me I just think it's funny lol. -
I don't think that's the right mentality to approach this situation with.. Much easier to siphon gas right out of the tank than to start nosing around for fuel lines and more-over actually punch a hole into a gas tank. And personally, regarding the locking/unlocking of the car...after experiencing first-hand just how easy it is to break into these cars (locked my keys in the GL last week; took me about 15 seconds to get in), I don't keep anything of value in them ever, anymore. How'd they get your gas door open? Just pried it out?

Detective JesZek, on the case! lol, those are great pictures. You can see the leaf springs. I really wonder what they used for the conversion.- 27 replies

Agreed, but when you pull into that gas station just off the highway and you're 3/4 of the way across the country from home with a car full of people and very overloaded with luggage/supplies/bikes, that moment is such a horrible feeling lol. Looking back, it is funny. And fortunate, when it all works out. :-p

'90 Loyale Botox Bumper
l75eya replied to Tex_williams77's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think it's 88 and on, as my 87 GL does still have the better looking bumpers. As far as the impact absorbing foam core goes, when the Loyale ran into a honda last month, the foam didn't absorb sh**. As a matter of fact, the bumper didn't absorb ANY of the impact, it literally just pushed backward and bent everything and anything (buckled fender, bent radiator and electric fan bracket, dented oil filter, slightly tweaked frame-rail)that was in it's way in doing so. So, sturdy..yes. Too much so lol. -
