  1. so im gettting ready to do the 4wd/mt swap into my fwd/at car. I do not plan on this car being an offroad machine, just a street/autocross car. That being said, which tranny would be my best bet for this type of setup?
  2. changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor, new alternator, removed PS and AC belts, ordered new lift supports, changed fuel filter in engine compartment, need to change other fuel filter by fuel pump.
  3. I must agree with you, there is satisfaction in polishing a turd.
  4. again thank you. yes i had planned on getting those mounts. I read on here: http://offroadingsubarus.com/83sedan_4wd.html that his car had the welded capture nuts on the right hand side for the hanger mounts but not on the left...what are the chances I have them on both sides? ALthough welding them is not an issue, I have a tig and mig welder.
  5. this is coming from someone who currently owns an auto...THEY SUCK.
  6. I may just got with an EA81 tranny, im not sure yet. car will probably not be a wheeler, just a street car. Yes, we have a small plastic piece that the gear selector sticks up through, that is seperate from the rest of the console. Does anyone have a picture of what the 4wd 5 speed console looks like?
  7. Northern Ohio here. Michigan is very rough right now with the job scene, I visit Michigan a lot. And yes, bring me a hatch as well. Im warning you now, there are very very very few old subarus here in this part of the country.
  8. OK. Does anyone know if you need the entire shifter console from a 5 speed car or just the shift boot to replace the auto gear selector panel?
  9. Looks like I have found someone with most the stuff I need to swap my FWD/Auto to 4WD stick. However, there is no need for me to pull things from the 4wd car that I dont really need. I am planning on pulling the following: Flywheel Tranny Tranny Crossmember Maybe clutch (may just use a new clutch kit) Driveshaft Gas tank Rear dif Rear dif hanger Rear torsionbar assembly. Can I reuse stuff like my 2wd brake drums and struts? Anything else I DONT need from the 4wd? If the struts bolt up the same just different heights I will just go with my 2wd struts for now.
  10. i know this is an old post...but are the older cars (ea81s) in that bad of shape? i would like to pull the entire drive train out of a 4wd car. but if the stuff is shot then no sense in me driving 8 hours.
  11. I am swapping to a manual tranny, and hopefully AWD down the road. I dont want to swap the tranny twice if I can avoid it. Is there anyway at all that you can run the 4wd tranny in 2wd and have no drive shaft?
  12. i have had zero problems ordering stuff for my 83 so far.
  13. http://www.coneeng.com/pdf/Flanges%20and%20Gaskets%20PDF.pdf Look at their 2 bolt flanges the universal 2 bolt flange FL2B-163 has a 1 5/8 hole with a 2.95 bolt hole center distance. There is about .20" to the edge of the flange from the end of the hole and about .45" from the inside of the hole to the edge of the center hole. im gonna order 2 and see if i can make them work. will keep you updated.
  14. Almost a complete system, its a little pricey: http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,carcode,1267927,parttype,5808,d,1981_SUBARU_DL_1.8L_1781cc_H4_2BBL_4_OHV_Catalytic_Converter.html
  15. I have both a factory installed sunroof and the cargo cover. I also have cruise but i dunno how to tell if its dealer or factory.
  16. awesome. im gonna go out and measure the distance between the bolt holes...i currently dont have a band saw and would like to make new flanges, i found a company that sells everything i need and they have several 2 bolt flanges that i could pry make work.
  17. ahh i think im understand. so is the distance between the spacer block holes and the header flange holes the same? you just remove the block and then the header flange holes line right up?
  18. thanks a million for the picture. looks simple enough... 3 more questions for ya. 1. did you make the flanges yourself 2. do you happen to know how far away from the head a 90 degree bend would have to be to clear everything that under the car? 3. Do you happen to know the distance between the bolt centers on the flange?
  19. chim do you have any pictures of where the header bolts to the head? id like to see how you have it set up.
  20. im going to be fabricating the headers myself. so not sure what you mean by original application.
  21. Should I leave the block spacers that are attached to the heads that are there for the emissions stuff (i will be removing emissions) or should my new header pipes just bolt straight up to the head itself?
