  1. Different pistons.Compression should be 110-120 psi depending on the cranking speed.
  2. I think they might be right.It is just not completely plugged.Regardless,you can tell if the exhaust is plugged w/the dash vacuum gauge.

No,that is not the same thing at all.Aircleaner hoses would provide only a minimal vacuum,you likely have 20 times as much from the intake manifold.The various crankcase seals and gaskets aren`t designed to withstand that level of vacuum.I suspect you are sucking dirt into the crankcase by the crankshaft lip seals and who knows where else.(distributor?) A stock carb would have been calibrated for a certain PCV flow but you may be OK on that score. Additionally,as you point out,the crankcase fumes won`t be protected from an intake backfire w/o a PCV valve or flame arrestor. Lack of positive ventilation can`t be a good thing either.
  4. According to Crane cams: It is never advisable to run mechanical lifters on a hydraulic camshaft. Although certain racing applications could benefit from the additional RPM potential of the mechanical lifters (and some racers do so), the ramp design of the hydraulic lobes is not designed for use with valve lash. The harshness (evidenced by the valve train noise) will shorten the life of the camshaft and lifters, and also the rest of the valve train. Never run hydraulic lifters on a mechanical camshaft, as immediate lifter pump-up will occur, leading to a lack of performance, and probable catastrophic engine failure
  5. Yes,that is incorrect.What year are you talking about? You shouldn`t have full manifold vacuum in the crankcase. How`s the oil consumption?
  6. Parts guy is correct,valve cover hoses connect directly to the aircleaner.No reed valves or anything else.This is the crankcase ventilation system Reed valves are part of a seperate emission control system(the air injection system)and should connect to the head rather than the valve cover.

  8. I``m pretty sure the rudimentry pre-85 computers have no capability to store historic trouble codes. ie-if you fix the problem the code is instantly gone
  9. "WOT" switch should close at 1/3 throttle not 2/3. Flashing ECS light at this point indicates no codes. With connectors unplugged and engine throughly warmed up,O2 sensor light should flash fairly quickly indicating proper operation.A bad sensor won`t necessarily set a code but the light is a good indicator of its condition.
  10. Read the codes by connecting the green connectors and turning the key on w/o starting the engine.
  11. The vacuum units are different,but not much in actual advance specs. Turbo vacuum diaphrams only provide 3* of retard under full stock boost.I seem to recall that non-turbo units also have enough movement available to provide some retard under boost.I didn`t measure,but,they seemed similar.For a while,I was considering using one on a turbo dizzy(arm is too short) The difference in turbo and NA dizzys is more in the centrifigual advance curves.Turbos advance more slowy reaching full 10* advance at 2800 rpm while the NA is fully advanced at 1900 or so. You could slow the advance of the NA unit by installing stiffer advance springs or lightening the weights. Then again,the extra octane of LPG might match nicely w/the quicker advance. An 85-86 MPFI dizzy would allow you to retain the knock sensor.

  13. My diagram doesn`t show the ignition amp.Coil signal comes from pin 37 and it is only reasonable that it would go to the amp first. Coil+ to pin 19.
  14. No it is not.Centre main bearing takes the crankshaft thrust loads.
  15. Red to pin 7. No green on my diagram,but,it almost certainly coresponds to Black/Red which goes to pin 10(a shared sensor ground).
  16. Don`t really know,but,I expect it is an ECU sensor ground. My diagram shows White to pin 17.
  17. Might be repairable w/a new thrust bearing.Won`t know until you open it up and check the crank.
  18. Hitachi and subaru part #s are stamped into the housing.
