85 Brat Power issues
toohey.michael replied to toohey.michael's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just read something about cleaning all connections and adding thicker ground wires fixed a very similar problem in 79 VW, any relevance to this is 85 Subaru? Sounds like exactly the same symptoms, I'll figure it out tomorrow and post my findings... -
I have a 1985 Brat, new alternator, new battery (both replaced in the last 6 months) now a new starter. I have been driving the car daily, yesterday it stalled on me and wouldn't restart which led me to the starter. Repl the starter, wouldn't start, jumped her and she fired right up. Now Alternator is not reading any volts on the gauge and car won't run longer than a few minutes from the jump. Running out of options and could use some advice! Thanks!

Still approaching problems as they come with my Brat. The latest adventure is dealing with what I believe are starter issues. Car will start and run sometimes, other times she won't turn over at all, just a click with the turn of the key and all power in car seems good. Going to begin removing the starter today and seems pretty simple, however if anyone has any suggestions/tricks to get this problem solved easily, please let me know! Thanks in advance Toohey

85 Brat Dies on hills
toohey.michael replied to toohey.michael's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Awesome thanks! I am also having some idling issues, thinking that all of the problems I am having are linked to this fuel filter dilemma, I will check the pump as well as the lines. Thank you for the quick feedback!! -
So my 85 Brat is a champ, not at all bummed on how the old girl is running at the moment however... I do understand that at 62 hp there aint a whole lotta power to push out to the wheels and she certainly wasn't built for speed!! I am concerned though, on hills if I keep my foot on the accelerator she bogs way down and threatens to die out on me, soon as I release the accelerator a touch she picks right back up and goes!! Is this just a side effect of having very low power, or am I having other issues within the motor keeping me from performing at her best? To address this issue so far I have done: - Spark Plugs - Alternator - Battery - Fresh Oil - Sea Foam fuel treatment - Air Filter I feel pretty confident that all of my electrical is tight, but now I believe I am having fuel delivery issues. My next step is replacing all fuel lines, fuel filters and cleaning the carb. If you have any suggestions or similar experience I would love to hear about it. Thanks!!

79 Brat Floor pan rebuild
toohey.michael replied to toohey.michael's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Cool, thanks for the affirmation. Yup, ole Stowe VT. Found this old girl up in the woods and cant wait to have her in proper running condition for the summer round here, Thinkin the biggest challenge will be finding jump seats for the bed!! -
I have a 79 Brat that I picked up a few months ago in VT. It's been cold here and I am finally starting to put in the work I knew was waiting for me when I bought this baby!! First things first, my floor pans are rusted out and I am beginning the project today. Both seats, carpeting, and console have all been removed and I am ready to start cutting!! I am a novice mechanic, if any one has any suggestions as far as tricks of the trade are concerned with repairing floor pans I would really appreciate it. So far I am making a cardboard template of the areas to replace and will use these to trace my sheet metal for the new pans. Once the metal is in my hands I will use wood clamps to fasten a 2 x 4 to use as a metal bender. Once bent into the desired shape I will clean up all of the metal on the braces and frame side rails to prep for welding. I'll try to keep posting on this project, maybe I will learn something that will be helpful to another somewhere down the road... Thank you in advance for any advice!!!

I am driving a 1978 Brat who's next step is a functioning exhaust. Can I use an exhaust system from loyale or GL Wagon from same generation? Thanks

85 Brat accelerator lag
toohey.michael replied to toohey.michael's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Awesome. All of the above going on the checklist for tomorrow mornin. Thanks for the quick reply! I'll be posting the outcome of my adventures in Brat land. Thank you!! -
I recently joined the family of Brat owner awesomeness but my Brat needs a little work... I have full intentions of replacing the original Carb with a Weber as I have been having some carb issues. One of these being that when I step on the gas I experience a ton of lag before the old girl starts going, some times even feels as though she's gonna stall out. Is this a symptom of a bad carb? Or will I still be experiencing this after I replace my carb? Any insight on this issue would be infinitely appreciated. Symptoms: - RPMs drop to almost 0 when I initially apply pressure to the gas pedal, then it fires up and away I go - When I am already moving, even at speeds around 40, and I hit the gas it almost stalls out before I begin accelerating Thanks for all of everyone's help!
