  1. Here you go Cyfun, this is a RHD mirror for the early '80s Subarus but it is basically the same as the late '70s version (accepting the slightly larger mounting plate).

    Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it.  If it goes much over $20, though, I'll probably just go with the big truck mirrors on the fender.

     

    Oh, and get this: I scored a box misc of 78-80 Brat parts AND a topper for $45 today.  No tail light lenses, but a pair of complete turn signals, a wiper motor, a turn signal stalk, and bunch of other random crap.

    Those big truck mirrors look way out of place, like the car has ears or wings.Not to mention they stick out far from the body so its easy to damage them.

     

     

    Hah yep, that's why I was thinking of mounting them on the fender, so they'd be slightly out of the way.  And as much as I hate to bastardize a cool car with unoriginal stuff... this thing is like 40% body rust, and ugly as HELL.  The wheels don't match, the windshield is cracked, has no muffler, heater doesn't work, driver's door won't unlock from the outside, tailgate handle is broken, and the left tail light is busted so I duct taped a random tail light from the junk yard over it.  It's basically a cheap shitbox, so I don't feel too guilty about making it uglier.

  3. 79 they started putting passenger side mirrors on most Subarus. Seems strange your '80 doesn't have both sides but maybe it's a base model.

     

    Those mirrors are around but hard to come by.

     

    Yep it's a DL, only two headlights.  Seems pretty rare as I mostly only see the quad headlight EA71s if any.

     

    What I think I might do is raid some big old truck mirrors from the junkyard and mount them on my fenders.

  4. The mirrors are on the right side in Australia too.

     

    The only spare one I have is not in good condition, the gasket is missing and so is the screw that holds the base to the mirror part . However, the mirror itself is fine. I should be able to find a suitable screw and I made a gasket out of rubber for the LHD side once, which could be used on the RHD too.

     

    It's yours if you pay shipping to the US but I kinda think you will find one eventually.

     

    1979 to 1982 second generation mirrors are exactly the same except for the larger base plate that mounts/screws onto the door. Without checking I think the mounting holes are further apart but this does not matter as they are only held on with self tapping screws. It would be a simple install.

     

    Later EA81 and EA82 mirrors have more complicated mounting arrangements. Certainly EA82 mirrors would need some work to fit, I'm not certain on the EA81 versions after '82.

     

    Yeah, the shipping would probably kill the deal.  Was looking at some universal mirrors at the parts store and they're under $15.  But thanks for the info on the 79-82 mirrors.  Sadly, my local junk yard has maybe ONE ea81 car, I'll have to look at it again.

Thanks for the tips, guys.  And I know they must've made mirrors for the right side since in Japan they drive on the right side.  I poked around on ebay and didn't find a damn thing when looking for side view mirrors that'd fit an '80 Brat.  I've always wanted fender mirrors but haven't found a good source for those either.

     

    Do you guys know for sure that ea81 or ea82 mirrors will mount onto an ea71, or are you just guessing?

I have an '80 Brat and it does not have a passenger side mirror.  It's pretty dangerous when I have a load in the back and can't see to change lanes.  Does anyone have or know where I could get a passenger side view mirror for an EA71, or at least know of an aftermarket mirror or one from another car that might mount up?  I'm tempted to just get a bigass universal fit pickup mirror, but it'd be pretty garish.

  7. Drove several hours to pick it up from rural Montana.  The guy wanted $500, which was probably a bit much, but I'd driven all that way and didn't wanna go back empty handed.  It runs and drives alright, but needs a tuneup, the exhaust is LOUD, and the body is extremely rusted out.

     

    I'm not 100% sure, but am assuming it's the DL model as it has two headlights instead of four.  And I'm also not sure if this has the 1.6 or 1.8 liter engine, cause when I go to look up parts, it gives me the choice of both. It does have the single-range transfer case, which kinda sucks cause I wanted to throw on some taller tires, so I'm gonna try and track down an ea82 1.8 and dual-range transfer case for a full swap as fuel injection and extra torque would be lovely.

     

    The VIN tag on the door says it was manufactured in 11/79, and the VIN is A69L-043500. Does that mean anything to anyone?

  8. I've done some research, but figured I'd post just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

     

    I'm looking at buying a '90 Legacy parts car, has an EJ22 and FWD auto trans, ridiculously low miles for the price.  In my area, there are tons of late 90s Legacies, Outbacks, and Foresters that have headgasket issues.  I'm wondering how difficult it will be to swap the old OBD1 EJ22 into an OBD2 car, and if there are any years in particular that are easier or flat-out incompatible.

     

    Here's what I know so far. Please correct me if I'm wrong, or feel free to add anything I've missed:

    • I'll need dual-port exhaust manifolds as newer cars are generally single-port.
    • I may want to swap flexplates as the Ej25D's is heavier.
    • I may need to find an intake from an ODB2 EJ22, and the intake from an ODB2 EJ25 wouldn't fit my EJ22.
    • If I use the ODB2 engine harness from the newer car, I'll need to steal a few sensors from the OBD2 engine.
    • The ECU from my '90 Legacy *should* plug in to the OBD2 harness, but the car might run fine with the OBD2 ECU, even if it's from an EJ25D.
    • I can't just plug the ODB1 EJ22 engine harness into the ODB2 car's main harness.
    • I could swap over my entire ODB1 harness into the newer car and forego ODB2 compatibility. My state doesn't do inspections so I don't have to worry about that.
    • I want a car no newer than '99 as the EJ251/Ej252/EJ253/Ej254 are going to be a ton of work to swap from, or not even compatible at all.

    I made friends with a local guy who has his own personal junkyard of sorts.  I don't think he had any Nissans, but he did have two 80s Toyota 4x4s, one with IFS and one with a solid axle.  I might see if he'll let me borrow the IFS to see if there's any way I could frankenstein it for Subaru use.  Actually... the first thing I should check is which way the driveshaft rotates.  If I flip it around and it's the same as a Subaru, I could mount up the whole thing behind my car, then it's just a matter of finding a matching gear ratio, and I'd have plenty of choices for a locker.  If not, maybe I can attach the control arms to my Sooby and frankenstein some CV axles.

  10. Grats! You're so very lucky it was unharmed. Funny they managed to use all the gas, they must have driven it a lot. If it were me, I would have staked it out to see if anyone came back.

     

    So the first thing you're gonna do now is wire in a hidden switch to the fuel pump wire, right? :D

  11. You did order an XT6 clutch, though? I think Exedy actually does make the Sachs. If you look up the part numbers it should tell ya. Having a normal EA82 clutch is mostly fine for daily driving, but if you're climbing stuff in 4low you'll get slippage if you're putting the power down. Since you're installing a new clutch now, and the XT6 doesn't really cost that more, might as well do the better one, I figure. I believe the part number is 15-009

  12. If it were me, I would leave the engine completely alone until the swap was done. Those compression numbers look great, and don't let the mileage fool you, if it was well maintained it will probably last another 100k. And since that's a non-interference motor, you can wait til the timing belt goes before changing it. Might wanna ask the previous owner when it was last changed, anyway.

     

    The only things I'd suggest changing are the typical tune-up items, simple things like vacuum lines, fluids, and maybe new plugs and wires if you think you need them. But since it runs fine now, I'd be hesitant to screw with it. But when you do the swap, be sure and get an XT6 clutch cause you'll need the stronger pressure plate. I think Exedy makes one now that's up to the task. Normal aftermarket XT6 clutches apparently aren't as strong as the original, and it used to be that the dealer was the only place to get one, and it's like $300!

  13. i wish something like an eg33 would fit in there, because that would be just awesome. But looking at that engine bay you're going to be tight with an ej22. what i was able to do on my mazda was basically put the bottom of the heads right above the frame rail. i just wonder how close that will get you to being lined up.

     

    i ordered a second bell housing from bill, so i'm shoving an eg33 in something, i don't know what yet, but damn it i'll make it fit in something fun. :grin:

     

    Since he's pretty much having to custom fab everything, wouldn't be that difficult to cut out the existing "frame rails" and make more room. I've been considering doing that to mine anyway just cause they're so weak and I wanna make a full subframe under my car that ties into the bumpers.

  14. Ah I gotcha. Didn't realize the EG33 was that much wider. And I suppose if you really wanted the power, you could much more easily drop in a WRX motor since you have plenty of room for intercooler piping. But like you said, a frankenmotor or even just a rebuilt 2.5 would probably fit the bill fine.
