Project Cheap:Build Lifted 86' GL Sedan Advice + Build
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Members Rides
Still in my possession, and I still drive it around...mostly to car meets, etc. Been busy with the house, kids, job, all the cars. I'm still around if someone nudges me to hop on the board . It's awaiting an desperately needed EJ swap, think it's evolved a bit more since this thread died off forever ago but nothing that exciting. More ?'s I can answer, pics I can provide? Just ask :-) Here's a few more recent pics of it down at a "HotRod" show..yes it was very out of place but it was requested to be there and got a ton of attention. LOL Edit...I'm totally wrong this was the original build thread on the car (I admit-tingly wasn't paying enough attention), it's evolved quite a bit since then. -
What's your wrenching experience?
DrKrazy replied to mcbrat's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Type of Wrenching: Shadetree, Maintenance, Semi-Pro (work at my brother's shop here and there on weekends for extra cash) How long doing it: 20ish years? Started as a kid with my brothers' Other skills: Everything IT guy for a living, framing, drywalling, electrical, plumbing, low voltage electrical, gardening, welding, and anything else I can get my hands on to learn! Or had to learn while re-doing my house -
Hmm was reading the thread and agreeing with everyone but, with that info it sounds like it's possibly one of your fusible links (inside the black box right by your battery). Does the car still crank over? And does it sound normal while cranking or a bit fast? Got a multimeter? Check for power on both sides of each of the fusible links and check to see if the distributor and rotor are turning as mentioned above.

Still looking for "test connector" pin #
DrKrazy replied to aiiadict's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Here maybe this will help as I don't time to run out to lifted rig to check with a multimeter tonight. -
Since I've been missing for a few years I'll throw up my setup too...hasn't changed at all.

Oil soaked air filter? Check your PCV valve and see if it's stuck and report back. It should rattle freely when removed and shaken. Guessing it's clogged up with oil/gunk from the seafoam treatment that loosened all that gunk up. If that's the case may want to pull your main large PCV lines and clean them out also.

Eric called me... That's well just Krazy! And awesome at the same time...while shooting that I would've never expected it to actually go anywhere but the board at the time. Do we get free 2011 Outback out of it Eric? And does this mean we are officially Subaru heros now? So happy they actually used some old school...of course one of the best looking old school wagons around. Congrats Eric on getting the Beefaru noticed by Subaru themselves!

Ahh nice to see some familiar names. Darn it why do I always loose my seat... Thought you would save it for me Nip? Plans yes, lots o' plans...also need to get caught up with what everyone else has done too....curious on how large your stable is now Turbone? And Shawn.. I had the Sedan at the bottom of Red Cone last year....did not make it far up (should've headed to Slaughter House first). I broke two CV's (1 front, 1 rear) and an axle stub in the first hour or so...had replacements on me, swapped them to get off the trail and back to the highway :banghead: Rode up in the in-laws Jeep...wasn't fun. I will however go back after I get a bigger engine in there and possibly the gears in the tranny/rear end. I know where Eric lives and can get a tranny out fairly quick Yea the Sedan is most of "projects" for the year..that and the RX is going to spend awhile at the Bro-In-Law's new body/paint shop Jerry still hanging around someplace?

Hey USMB!...been a long time since I actually came posting, just stopped in here or there over the last several years to answer pm's. Life has been busy, swapping jobs, working long hours, all the kids, etc! Not much time for all my poor Roo's sitting collecting dust. For those who remember me or my cars.. Yes I still have ALL of my cars (The 2 RX's, Lifted Sedan, Legacy Wagon, OBW)...and yes I still start/drive them minus the parts RX at least every other month to keep them in good condition. Really only driving my OBW anymore though. That should change here in 2011 though (lots o plans, we will see what gets done)... So I am back to hang around and get some projects done this year . If most of the old school USMB Colorado guys and gals are still around, sorry I haven't been in touch and hope everything is going good for everyone! Keith -aka- DrKrazy Still a Subaru Fanatic

We test drove a loaded 7 Passenger 06' yesterday and with much disappointment my wife and I concur. It was very nice with only 22k on it, comfortable but gutless for having an H6. My wife even said "What the hell, move it while trying to get on I-70". I drove it around and wasn't impressed at all. Handled ok, but something just didn't feel right with the transmission. Now both my wife and I are stick people, though my daily driver OBW is an Auto so I do have a decent comparison there. I will however say it still "felt" like a Subaru just different, way different. Wife did like the fact it sat up so much higher and had plenty of room for all of us with not feeling like a Suburban. I'm not a rich man, single income family with 3 kids and a mortgage so I was looking at the "cheaper" used ones. Maybe I should pony up and go take a look at good 08-09 deals and test drive one with the larger engine in it. Thanks everyone for your impressions, please keep them coming as I'm taking notes on anything anyone says.

Okay guys and gals my wife and I were blessed with our third child, Julianna on Aug 28th! Thank you, thank you. Though we have now realized we have out grown her legacy wagon and my Outback (+ the lifted sedan and RX too) when we have the whole family together. When we are all together that's my wife, me, my 12 year old daughter, my 3 year old son in a car seat, and the newest daughter in a car seat. Yea that is quite a squeeze in either car and my oldest daughter hates being completely squished between the car seats :-\. So looks like we need to move one of our cars to a larger one. Since I'm a Subaru fanatic I've been thinking of a nice used Tribeca since they are so damn expensive. We hate the looks of any of the years but could get past that if they are truly a Subaru at heart. Going to go test drive a 06' 7 passenger model today to see if wife likes it at all. Big thing is she hates automatics which is a slight problem with the Tribeca. So please tell me your impressions! Long term owners, mechanics, reliability, etc. Thanks in advance

New Colorado member, saying Hello!
DrKrazy replied to JohnBriggs's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yep he had a run in with me .... No problem John, was nice to meet you and was all of 15 minutes worth of work. Like I said I think that air filter with a 1/2" of crap on it was the real culprit, but you were running around in limp mode because of the sensor anyways. Should be running much better now, report back here or call me. I will repeat this again here just to emphasize how important it is... You must get the timing belt/tensioner/idlers replaced ASAP, it's well past due at the 139k that are on your car. Again just let me know and I can do it with you in couple hours time. Though I highly suggest just doing the water pump/oil pump seal/cam & crank seals at the same time. Might be able to get away without the seals for now since your car didn't appear to be leaking anywhere. Otherwise welcome to THE best Subaru community out there, and I'll see ya around. -
Agreed, front wheel bearing. I had the same noise a few weeks back on my 00' OBW with 141k, and also had to take out the axle before I could tell it was a bad bearing. There was no movement on the wheel at all (which I'm not used to for bad bearings) but when I got into it they were wasted...and so was the hub. Job isn't that bad took me less than an hour to get everything apart and a tad more reinstalling after taking the housing to my Bro's shop to press out/in the bearings. Going to do the other side soon for the sake of it.

CO: Red Rocks meet 9-21.
DrKrazy replied to TheYeti's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
B-Day party for my nephew....so won't be making this one. End of season BBQ in Oct anyone? Edit: I had the wrong day...I will actually make this one. RX is down for starting on the bodywork, so will be in the lifted sedan or my 00' OBW not sure which yet. -
Denver USMB - alternator crisis!! - need ASAP
DrKrazy replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
$175 , that better be with a decent core charge. I believe that one is probably the right one. Take a look at your wiring connectors before you go get it or better yet just pull it and bring it with you. You got my number if you need help. Edit now that I think about it I could swear 95-96's Legacy 2.2's were 85 amps, think the Impreza 2.2's were 75 amps, so 110 would be a decent upgrade if it fits. -
Arrow is pointing toward the well known (well only the plastic ones that leak like crazy) Oil Separator Plate. Pull it and reseal with permatex or your favorite. Beast is correct the rear main is the normal looking seal around the crank. I have never seen that ring on a flywheel for a manual, only on automatics.. Looks like your having some fun!

Happy Birthday DrKrazy!!!!!!!
DrKrazy replied to Jerry DeMoss's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Thanks guys, was a good day but all I really did was work..the wife and I are going out this weekend while my brother takes the kids. I'm a real fanatic? I only have 5 Subarus  Hello my name is Keith, and I'm a Subaru Fanatic. -
ignition BS....on 87 XT non-turbo
DrKrazy replied to RMVR53's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Tach jumping like crazy? I would assume you've checked all the connections to the coil? Hmm non-turbo MPFI, parts are hard to come by even out here. Your welcome to come dig through my spare parts stash/parts RX if you want. I got rid of most of my spider intakes and parts but I have a TON of parts for hotwire EA82T's...but not sure if the MAF is the same or not . I'm out in Golden right near 6th/I-70, PM me if your interested Edit: I remember several years ago when I put a new engine in my RX that the tach wire to the coil had actually been "disturbed" by the removal/installation process and was intermittently cutting out because that wire was grounding out several inches back from the connector. Took me awhile to figure out... disconnect the tach wire from the coil and give it run...worth the 2 mins to try. If ok trace that wire and see if it got cracked or is rubbing. -
Beefaru's in Minnesota ........ yah!
DrKrazy replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I second that! Haven't heard or seen ya since we went for the 200k miles rollover trip...what's the Beefaru at now? Just to remind everyone just how impressive Eric's wagon is.....Here it is at the moment it rolled 200k! Oh and that's 200k miles since it had it's EJ22 with a VERY special 4.11 geared RX tranny swapped in...think it was lifted at that time too. Give me a ring or pm when you get back in town Eric. It's about time I saw you too Jerry...
