My IC is off an MR2, and originally came with a fan attached to it (which died). If I remember correctly I just did some bending the fan bolt down tabs on the IC and bolted the EA81 fan right to it. And yes it's on a relay attached to a switch, I only run the IC fan when boosting hard (well as hard as stock boost goes) or too help cool the engine bay a bit while driving in stop and go traffic, also dubs as a hot air blower out the bottom of the engine bay. Still gotta hook-up my IC sprayer but running out of room in my engine bay.

There are off of pretty much any EA81 (maybe they had to have A/C) but these are the ones they ran instead of a crank fan, very very skinny like 1.5" at max. Mounts pretty much right to the EA82 Radiators but is small enough to clear the waterpump pulley. I left the EA82 A/C fan hooked to it's thermoswitch, EA81's are both hooked to relays/switches, I run EA81 one on my radiator almost all the time, the EA82 kicks on with A/C or when it hits a certain temp like normal. They work awesome, make sure your A/C condensor is in good shape too if you haven't removed it. I'm sure you will prob build your RX up well over mine (since I built mine for reliability/daily driving), so might want to look into some newer better slim line fans that can pull some serious CFM's. I also have mine oil cooled which helps a ton also, but that is in front of A/C condensor blocking even more air from getting to the radiator. On these recent 100+ degree days I can get the RX up to almost 3/4 on the highway while boosting then the A/C fan will kick in and bring back down to under 1/2. Normal running on mine is 1/3rd to a 1/2 up the gauge unless it's super hot out. Not great pics but maybe they will help: The slightly larger EA81 fan I run on my intercooler: Better shot of the clearance between water pump and electric EA81 Fan:

colorado meet at red rocks awdpirates
DrKrazy replied to jeffast's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yep same here as always, work Sunday's. Will try to get out of work for an hour or two to be able to show up but no guarantees. -
Yes the heater strips are in the glass(actually what is holding the mirror in one piece & still works), I've had it off...had a replacement but forgot about the heated mirrors until I took it apart. So had to put the broken one back on, since the one I had was just the regular mirror. Been like this since we bought it, but drives me nuts even though I only drive the car once in a blue moon. Wife doesn't really care, she knows the right piece of it to look at to see her blind spot, but she will once there is a good mirror on there.
-
Thanks will check that out and compare to local dealer who gives okay prices, just about to call him. This car is original, never been repainted (could use a good buffing but I'm lazy), no wrecks, and just turned 120k, still a baby. Well that makes a 3rd somewhat rare Roo I have sitting in my driveway. Will have to call off the search around the yards since I'm guessing the Alpine Sport version is also rare? I live in Colorado where there is Roo's everywhere and don't recall seeing too many of them.
-
This is not an alpine sport that I know of (wouldn't that be written on the side? Sorry old Gen Soob guy here). Think it's just a Legacy L (badge is missing), well fell off a few weeks after we bought it which was years ago. Only the glass is broken, power mirror works fine...but the heat strips are in the glass part. Guess I'm dealer bound for this, bet that's gonna hurt. Does have the cold weather package, block heater etc...and everything else imagineable except leather and a sunroof/moonroof. Figured it just had to be special ordered by someone since it is so decked out minus the few things. This is the car in question here (the only Legacy in the picture, other two are my toys):
-
Curious as my wife's 94 (which has every option known to man on it, except leather thank god, but still even has the heated seats) has a cracked driver's mirror. I've had myself and several other people, including a few other board members scouring around trying to find a replacement for it...this has been months and none of us have even seen another legacy with heated mirrors. So seriously how rare is this option? Was this legacy a special order or what?
-
Looking like your making some major progress, and man do I ever want to take that vette for a spin!
-
Run the slim EA81 Electric Fan in place of the mechanical fan...will help a ton. I run one in place of my mechanical fan, and one on my intercooler for long boosts. Make sure you have an awesome radiator, and always could be just the difference in the way the gauges are reading. We all know the Roo gauges are incredibly accurate
-
Yep sounds like the TOD, get it warm change out the oil and filter...take it for a high spirted highway drive. Bet ya it will stop, I have seen this car run and it wasn't ticking at all (in fact it was running like a top) so guessing the seafoam just knocked some crap loose and got stuck in one of the lifters/passage ways so that lifter isn't pumping up Mike.

I have just the hood protector on my RX, had a whole bra on one of my now deceased roo's. Pics:

DrKrazy replied to BeefaRu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks for putting that up Jerry, and actually if you can just get the glass portion off that's all I need. Wife's is cracked to hell. (no need for a rear wiper motor for the RX anymore, fixed that yesterday) -
removing sheared bolt with drill bit stuck in it
DrKrazy replied to idosubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Eek no fun, I had this same problem a few years ago in the rear end of a truck with a left hand drill bit. After talking to many knowledgeable guys at the hardware store I ended up using 2 of these special coated titanium(or was it diamond tipped?) bits to be able to drill through the other bit. Not sure if that's exactly what they were but a few minutes (like an hours lol) of drilling with them and it came out with the broken bolt, they were super expensive bits though..in the range of $35, meant for drilling through super hardened steel. Not sure if that helps at all but any good hardware store should know what you need to drill through that other drill bit. I would at least try and drill it with a cheap bit just to see if it doesn't come loose first. I've also had sucess using my dremel with a grinding bit to knock loose broken off easy outs (will never ever use those things again, of course we all know that). -
Carb woes+, looking for suggestions, long winded...

Forgot to take before pics...which I really should have since this was the most caked, greasy, disgusting EA82 I've worked on in a long long time. Can kinda tell from the pics, look at the driveway underneath...all from this car, pressure washing it, and keeping 2 different oil pans under it almost the whole time. There is actual mounds of greased up chunks of soob goo everywhere from the pressure washing, and it still didn't get that clean in the engine.... Ok the car that has caused me hell for the last few days: Look an EA82 Wagon, Sedan, and RX in my Driveway(Legacy Wagon hiding behind the EA82's), My dream! (Now just gotta buy myself a wagon): Nice somewhat clean engine with really clean painted valve covers, can't help myself even if it's not my car. Had them off to do the gaskets anyways: The mess of a driveway: Should've taken a picture of myself yesterday and today...ok off to shower for the 4th of July night! Happy 4th everyone! -

Yes they are probably worn..but nothing I can do about it as that was the one of the problems with my spare carb. I swapped the choke's out and it helped a ton, will actually hold an idle cold or warm now, just nothing under 1100-1200 rpms or it will sputter and die. Still stumbles while accelerating and will just randomly die but starts right back up. So at least it's better now, carb still needs to be replaced. I at least fixed her oil leaks, coolant leaks, vacuum leaks and timing. Plus gave it a good tune-up + oil change, runs ok now. The linkage for the 4wd was all jacked up so I fixed that also, works great now. So will finish up some other stuff on it and let her go with it knowing what else needs to be replaced/repaired. Unless Jerry comes by and can make that carb run better without many parts...he is a miracle man sometimes. -

Thanks for the offer Cab but chances are I won't run up there, her radiator works great still, but is starting to seep. She can deal with that later, and I'll just trade my lifetime warranty spare in for her. Well GD was right after looking closely there is 0 spring action in the choke! I'm sure this is a big part of the problem. But what do you know the spare carb I have sitting here appears to great spring action, so going to attempt to swap the chokes out without destroying the Carb. Good call GD I'm sure that will at least help things quite a bit, considering I can move her choke butterfly anyway I want, it's just free swinging in there! -

Hmm Thanks GD will have to check those out, I do have another carb sitting here but it ran just as bad as the one on her's. Same problem too, bad idle, extremely stumbly. So probably can't rob it off there, thanks for the tips on rivets also..now I can tell if it really has been rebuilt! Same way here man, I don't believe the fix in a can...always gotta break out the tools. And Yes I'm what they call a "RedNeck Rigger", and proud of it! Yea checked all around for leaks, that's how I found the ones that were leaking..well carb cleaner until I ran out then WD-40. -
I currently have a friend's 85 GL Wagon 5psd D/R Carb with 198k sitting at my house for some repairs. I'll give you guys a quick run-down and then looking for some suggestions. History: She bought the car several years ago, had the carb rebuilt (twice, they screwed it the first time) then it had some other problems so she parked it for about 3 years. She has now resurrected it somewhat and has been driving it around for the last year. Not sure how she's been driving it but she just managed an 600mile trip to my house in it. This car is very very neglected. Ok she is away for a few days on her honeymoon (hence why I have her car finally). Trying to get running reliabily for her as a secondary wedding present. So far I have found and fixed: Distributor off a tooth, took out put back in correct place Cam timing off by a tooth, dismantled front of engine and redid timing belts correctly (and scoped everything out since it leaks oil like crazy) Replaced broken vacuum valve of some sort - my stash Replaced two broken vacuum lines - my stash Reset the EGR light Blocked off ASV valves (she lives in desert and doesn't need emissions stuff) was worth a shot to make it run better - 2 dimes Changed out distributor cap and rotor, wires with good ones from my stash Plugs/filters/etc all recently changed by her. The rest of the stuff it needs that I've found so far but haven't fixed, some not going to: Radiator Seeping Coolant Fan Switch Bad (I rigged it to always on for now) Carb toasted- I think Alt/AC belts need to be replaced bad (none in my stash were the right size, this car has no P/S??) Needs all new cooling hoses (replaced a few already) Front Brake Pads/Rotors Rear Pads/One Wheel Cylinder Oil Pan Gasket Valve Cover Gaskets New exhuast from y-pipe back + few tiny holes in the y welded (extremely loud between the y-pipe and next cat, going to try and fix that tomorrow) She also mentioned the 4wd bucks like crazy..it's a D/R and haven't had a chance to check that out yet..too much other stuff, but she has brand new matching tires all the way. Ok so yea this thing is also kinda trashed out, would clean up and body is straight with some rust. Thought for sure after I got the timing cleared up it would run a ton better, which it does but just showed how jacked the carb must be. First off I know nothing about the hitachi's and don't really want to, FI/Weber all the way baby. It can't hold an idle when cold at all, 50/50 if it does when warm and it's not steady. Will die when it wants to or shoot to 1500rpms. I can also literally block the air intake with my hand and it will actually run much smoother?!? If you rev it up it does run better but kinda stumbly.. So advice I'm looking for, and I'm trying to not spend too much on it since it's not my car, and she is completely broke: Should I tell her forget it and get another wagon? Should I slam a can of seafoam through it first to see if it helps? Would love to put a good used, rebuilt, or weber carb on there, but $$ and only have the car until thursday. Is there any hope for this carb? Any CO guys have a known good EA82 Hitachi sitting around for cheap? The way it sits, it's a $100-$200 Roo that's in okay condition but needs a ton of repairs thus making it worthless. Having a hard time deciding what to do/tell her. What do you guys and gals think? Runs so terrible I have hard time even letting her try to make the 600 mile trip home, though it is running better now than when she brought it to me, but scares me and I'm a hard guy to scare when it comes to Roo's. Ok that was long...sorry everyone.

I recently did a rattle can two tone on my lifted sedan. I think the two tones look pretty good, though it did take a bit for it to grow on me. Seen a lot of two tones around so sure wagons will show up in the thread too. Pics in this thread of my sedan: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58209

Yep I did basically the same thing as Mick, big huge solenoid to tie them together when ign is on, seperate when off. I run my starter, and all *extra* accessories off my 2nd battery. Main Battery powers everything else for the car. Works great with my 100amp GM Alt, this is all in good prep for running a winch someday.

You can swing by anytime I'm not at work, can swap them out right here too if you want, not like I'm far or anything Still got my number?

Nice score Mike! So what's the plans for this one? If you need em I'll sell you my snow tires I had on a few different soobs for awhile for like $20 till you can get some other ones/decide what your going to do with the car. Scary running around with bald tires out here. Great snow tires, and still in good shape (less than 10-15k on them I'm pretty sure, full set of 4) on wheels ready to go taking up room in my shed. I just don't have anything I'll run them on atm. Though I may want your stock wheels for a trade in case I do want to grab another set of tires for the RX or future Soob, that's open for discussion though. Anyhoo that is a good score...how many miles on that baby?

Blah Sunday, won't be able to make it...work of course

Figgering out an EA 82

These manuals should help you out (PDF version of some of the FSM): http://subaru.kacsh.com/manuals/Subaruea82-ServiceManualPart1.pdf http://subaru.kacsh.com/manuals/Subaruea82-ServiceManualPart2.pdf -
Yep, never owned a Subaru that I didn't put a new two core radiator in. Even always keep a spare or two around. Have one now but I would need to turn it in for the warranty and get it replaced. If it helps at all Mike to keep my RX under halfway on our dry hot summer days, while boosting on the highway/or running A/C I had to install a brand new radiator (I really recommend Performance Radiator, they are great), intercooler, intercooler fan, oil cooler, & dump the mechanical fan for a slim EA81 electric fan. Oil Cooler made the biggest difference, followed by the replacing the mechanical fan with an electric. Though I did my intercooler right after I put my new engine in, and I'm sure that's a big key in keeping it cool on the highway also but wasn't enough for me..I don't ever want to see the RX above halfway on my gauge..normally sits at about 1/3rd to right below halfway (Sorry not sure what temp that actually is). I THINK the radiators should be the same as any of the EA82's, don't know for sure though. EDIT: If you want to drop by and see if they are the same, or even try my extra radiator (think it is still good, just has alot of mashed fins that could be straightened) I have a few sitting in my shed.
