And So I Bid You Farewell....
DrKrazy replied to TurboXT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm an odd trade, but I love Z's...though they suck in the winter. I had a 240z with triple webers on it several years ago, super fast..rarely drove it in the snow was just too scary. A lady in a U-haul backed over the front end and destroyed for good. You'll be back Rick....or at least I hope so. -

Nice been waiting to see you lift that hatch. Can't wait to see it -

$250 For Piston Rings?!?!?!?!?!?!
DrKrazy replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Autopartsplace.com (think it's basically the same company as thepartsbin.com, though the prices are usally cheaper) has the piston ring set for $89.11 EA82 Piston Ring Set -

Couple blocks west of Alameda and Union on Alameda. Think it's actually Alameda and Center Ave (never actually bothered to look at the cross street)So basically the Green Mountain area. Give him a ring if your interested. -
Wasn't really sure where I should post this at, so feel free to move it if you mods want to. Ok, check this out guys/gals my Brother who is a master mechanic and helps run a shop in Lakewood is looking for someone that is looking to get into auto mechanics/or already is that has good desire to learn and work hard. He called me to have me put this out on the board, since he knows most of us are own mechanics anyways. Pay depends on qualifications/having your own tools...but none of that is necessary. My brother is really looking for someone who he can help pass his trade on to. Sure you'll be doing oil changes, tires, etc at first but everyone has to get their start someplace, and he is just paying back what was done for him when he started. Small shop, but very busy...to the point they actually book the medium/big work ahead of time. (Never leaves me time to get my cars in and use the racks/tools there :-\ ) If interested contact Ken or Bob at Center Tire (303)985-7199 (don't let the name decieve you, they do everything) and don't forget to tell them Keith sent you!

Was great meeting you Jerry, come on by anytime...your right no picture I could take of PC does it justice, I look at it everyday and am still amazed how big it is. Next time you come by though bring a mop for the big puddle of drool you left inbetween PC and the RX just kidding. Was great to finally show off PC to another board member, since we all know only other Subaru addicts can truly understand my cars....Plus you got to see me at my best, covered in grease ripping apart my parts car in 30-45mph cold wind, where any Subaru lover should be. EDIT: Oh Yeah...the threads for the that new oil sending unit I put in...it's says thread size: 1/8 27 NPT right on it! -
Holding up an Intercooler
DrKrazy replied to Myxalplyx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hmm the redneck in me says if you need to hold it up without bolting to it...how about some pieces of old radiator hose cut to whatever height, and standing up, then glued/held down to the spare tire mount somehow. Should provide a pretty soft yet somewhat stiff mount below it. I'm always thinking redneck and what I have around in my shed/storage room downstairs. -
Well welcome a-board, looks like you had some fun...and on the side of the road no-less. I'm impressed, even though I'm sure it sucked doing it there.

Exactly, the roll pins go into the crank pulley from the timing gear. So if I'm correct (not an engineer or anything) that takes all the tension off the woodruff/drift key, and all it's used for anymore is the intial line up before bolting it down. No drilling or anything...just bolt it on. That's the way they made the kit. Pretty sure he had told me though that's it a certain timing gear off of like 1-2 years of the EJ22 that he modifies, other won't work. Can't remember what I paid but it wasn't expensive considering you have to replace most of those parts anyways. The guys down there at S-Wings are great! The crank bolt is supposed to get tightened down to way more than what the FSM says. Do a search and you'll find that out, and that is usally what causes this problem from what I've read.

Seen that a few times on my wife's legacy, was bought like that. Came apart 6 months later...got a new drift and pulley...welded it to the crank. Tried to do the best my Brother and I could since it was right before a 1000 mile road trip she was taking. Was really ticked off at the sight of it, had to be from a previous mechanic screwing things up. Stayed for 6 more months...then came apart again doing even more damage to the crank. This time I gave Emily a call at CCR Engines (thanks again Emily) and she pointed me over to the guys at S-Wings stuff. They actually have a kit that is supposed to fix this for good, I installed it and it is still holding so far. Really an ingenious idea using roll pins in the timing gear to hold the pulley tension instead of putting all the pressure on the drift. Comes with a timing gear and pulley modified by them and a new drift key. You can contact S-Wings to get more information, pricing at (303) 777-8658 if your interested.

Oh yeah! Looking real good, and I agree those wheels are super nice looking on your wagon.

Heck our biggest difference is the price of the car..If I tried to get a Brat as nice as yours it would cost me 2-3k US also. So I would more than likely have tons more into it. As far as the LSD and Rear discs...I live in Colorado (so many old Subaru's here it's almost insane) and all I have to do is wait for the right Turbo parts car to show up, already passed on a few, but after the new year when I have some more cash I will pick one up for a few hundred. Oh yeah gotta get my other parts car out of here first, or the wife will go crazy. I'm sure by the time I'm in the range of calling it done I will have well over 3k into it. It's honestly dying for an EJ22 swap, which is yet another parts car sometime down the road, but more expensive parts car. It will defintely be Project Not-So-Cheap soon -
I'm running the moderate 4" lift (but seems like the high clearance, the car is huge!), and I love it but have my problems with it. I used two brand new radiator hoses and cut them to fit, that's not a big deal at all. I'm currently running with no pitch stopper, need to get one made that's a tad longer. I haven't gotten an alignment yet, but was waiting for my new front strut extentsions to fix my camber issue. Well I got the new ones and nothing has changed with the camber which is my problem with the lift. I have a feeling the camber issue has to do with my adjustable struts even though they are cranked all the way down. I may just slot the mounting points so I can adjust the camber while on the alignment rack. I will take it in for at least a front end alignment (since it's free for me) but I doubt it will be off much at all, car drives almost perfectly straight down the road. Though it's hard to tell without the sway bar. Overall the lift was built really well, welds were all really good, it bolted up fairly easily, and since I got in on the first group buy the price was unbeatable. I have yet to truly test it off-road, only played around a tad. My AA lift gets 3 1/2 out of 4 stars, would get 4 except for the camber, and having to do my front strut extentsions a few times in all different positions etc only to have the same problem or make it incredibly worse.

The smaller stock EA81 one on mine, I actually have two of smaller ones on the RX... one on my radiator next to the original EA82 A/C Electric Fan, and one on the bottom of my IC sucking air in through the IC when I want . Don't think the EA81 A/C one will fit between the water pump pulley and the radiator. I have beefed up my electrical system to handle everything, but adding one electric fan isn't going to kill you.

Pretty sure the original spare would still fit fine, it's sitting down on the frame rail if you want to call it that. Of course my 235/75R15 Spare has never had a chance of fitting there... that's why it's on the roof rack. -
Agreed, have one on my RX that replaced the clutch fan.

Well drove it all day yesterday for our trips around for Christmas...even the wife drove it a bit . She loved it, besides the lack of power, and increased braking distance. So far the camber looks to be the exact same as with the old strut extensions :-\, and that's after about 150 miles. Anyways today started with me just putting on some seat covers my sister-in-law got the car (me for christmas) to cover up the old greasy seats. Ended up redoing some wiring for some relays and the next thing you know I'm installing a 2nd battery. Just one of those days where one thing leads to another which leads to another. Before I start I will say I know your not supposed to use 2 different kinds of batteries in this setup...some red/blue tops will come later. Ok the price of this upgrade was FREE! Everything I used for it came from my parts car. Battery tray, battery, battery cables, hold downs...ok well the bolts I used to bolt the tray up didn't come from the parts car. Since I haven't relocated my air intake yet, I looked around and decided on an even better spot (see pics). Bolted the tray down through the side of the engine compartment, then used the original hold down and bolted that to my strut tower. Then used the other adjustable side to snug it all up. Works great and took me all of 30 mins to completely install and wire up. Still need to go pick up another 100amp GM alt since the first one wasn't the right setup, and then pick up 2 blue/red top optimas. Should take care of any power needs this car will ever use. Will need it for my future plans too..... Pics: Hope this thread hasn't gotten super old for everyone, thought it would be nice to chronicle a build-up on the board from start to .....do they ever get finished? -
Bah! Park? What park?...where you have taken pics before? Where the hell is that place, I need to test out PC a tad too and still be able to limp it home if I break it. If your going tomorrow let me know, I'll meet you there or something.

Indeed where are the pics then, since I didn't get to see it today? Got PC fixed up today...so I'm ready for wheelin when you are....

PC got a brand new oil pump today, got the replacement front strut extentsions in, plus a few other minor things (put the snow wheels/tires on the RX, and tried to track down a small coolant leak on it). Took PC for a good drive to get the lifters to shut up which they did . Plus have better oil pressure now then what I have ever seen on this car, almost as good as the really tight low mileage engine in my RX (idle at 25-35psi, 3k rpm=65+, RX runs just a tad higher). Looks like I still have a slight camber issue, but will see after I put some more miles on it. Still better than what it was. Of course developed another weird problem where it would start idling up and down and throw a code for abnormal fuel injector response or something...never ends. At least it's back on the road and not ticking like an SOB. I WILL find time and a place to take it wheelin' in the next week. So expect some real off-road pics soon. -
I still have my sway bar....cut into a few pieces sitting in my shed But since Rick drives this baby as his daily I don't blame him for leaving it on, at least for now. Still think a detechable one would be good for daily driver/occasional off-road driver. Rick I wil be at my house which is basically 6th & Indiana (then up and behind the Jefferson county fairgrounds). Just gotta put in my new oil pump, that showed up yesterday after it was supposedly on back order and I wouldn't get it until next week...stupid parts place. I also finally got my new front strut extenstions to hopefully fix my camber issue, the new ones defintely have more of an offset so I think that should take care of it. Drop me a PM or give me a call at seven-two-zero-nine-six-two-six-zero-zero-nine if you want to cruise by. If not I can wait till the meet/some wheeling etc to check it out. Jerry-that 80 (81?) Brat is still sitting down the street from me and hasn't moved. Too bad it's a GEN 1 (hard to lift, I think), still think the right amount of cash will walk away with it. Even though he took the for sale sign down 5 months ago.
-
Sweet! Gotta see this thing...if your not busy maybe you can swing by tomorrow while I'm working on PC so I can check it out. Warning I might start drooling though. Incredibly jealous over just the whole Brat thing by itself..but lifted Brats rule! Up for some wheelin next week then? KBD? Jerry? (if I can bring PC back from the dead again)

So anyone up for some wheeling the week between Christmas and New Years? I should hopefully have PC back on the road this weekend as long as my new oil pump shows up. Edit: Crap just found out my oil pump won't be here until the middle of next week, damn back order!
