I run a full flex-a-lite kit on my RX, the sandwich adapter you need is part number 3961 (you can check their application guide on their website, even though it doesn't say Subaru next to it). Or I think WJM knew where to get them also...maybe cheaper. Bought my whole kit from Summit Racing. Flex-A-Lite Oil Cooler Adapters

Anyone have the SPFI Conversion guide anywhere?

Another Score Thread- 86 GL Sedan 4x4 SAVED!
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Spent a few more hours on it today... Cleaned the carb up real good, fixed the problem with it heating up (prob why it was taken to the shop in the first place). Just so happens the one electric fan (no mechanical?) was wired backwards and was blowing instead of pulling...duh. Also added another electric fan I had laying around. Adjusted the clutch a bit, and cleaned up the interior a tad to find an almost perfect interior! Filled up the tranny and double checked all the hoses (brand new ones still in the trunk from the shop). Well took it for a drive, isn't quite idling right, real rough. Figure it's the old gas, crapped up tune-up parts, everything from sitting. Runs much better once you get it above 2k. Drives good, struts are in great shape, 4wd works great, all the power stuff works (minus the clock). Needs a whole new exhuast, leaks everywhere and has a cherry bomb for a muffler . Also found in the trunk with FSM's was a folder with what looks to be the full work history on this car, brand new hoses, belts, & a fuel filter...extra bonuses. Will defintely be fixing this one up, just have to go through the hassle of the title. Already invisioning a 3" Lift, pugs, big tires, and EFI conversion to start... -
Did a search and came up with a bunch of info but not the actual guide that got written. And it's not in the new USRM that I can find, so was hoping someone had it still someplace. Thinking the new GL Sedan will need the conversion and then a lift and some bigger tires....woot! Thanks in advance to anyone who might have it..

DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thinking this one is going to get a lift, I have the RX..time for the trail rig (since my truck is way too expensive to drive). -
Well looking through craigslist today I found this car for sale that just happened to be right down the street. 86 GL 4x4 Sedan, 161k, 5spd DUAL-RANGE! Carb'd and has been sitting for 2 years at a shop that the owner left it at (not being able to afford to fix it). So I swung by to look at it, body and interior is decent shape minus the front end damage. Been sitting for 2 years and they just wanted it out of there and were going to donate to charity this afternoon. The hitch~the title is from out of state (Oregon, what a surpise all the rust free roo's seem to come from there) and has been signed twice, so will be a bit of a hassle there. Prob just have my brother throw a mechanics lean on it and then get the title. Offered them $100, threw a battery in it, and a sparkplug to replace the one that was broken. Started right up after a few cranks to get fuel up there. Woot! No smoke at all, runs fairly decent and everything works. Needs the typical tune-up, oil-pump seals, all other seals, hoses, a CV and some exhuast work..plus the major cleaning and should be a great little car. Not to mention the huge bonus of what was in the trunk...an almost complete set of Factory Subaru Manuals! Woot, good score for $100 in my brain..here is some pics..more in my photo gallery. AND THE SCORE IN THE TRUNK! Still waiting on the 80' Brat down the street too...hehe plenty of parking spaces.

Who's installed a ground kit in thier ea81/ea82?
DrKrazy replied to lastchance's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well when I did the engine in my RX I cleaned up all the ground points and still found them to be not enough (in my brain overkill is good when running lots of electronics like me). So I didn't use one of those kits, but I did build my own out of 6ga high temp/oil & gas resistant wire. My lights don't flicker anymore, and my voltage gauge stays right where it should at all points in time. I also installed a capacitor for my stereo at the same time so can't tell you what did what. Think most people will agree more ground points on the older subes is not a bad idea. HP gains...I didn't notice any and didn't expect to. I will give those kits credit for looking better than mine, but I'm Mr. Cheapo... (the thick green wires going everywhere is them + a power line or two out of the same wire) I ran two new ones to the engine, one to the tranny, 2 to the body, battery, plus the ground block bolted to the inner fenderwell. -
Super High Temp Engine Paint while I was building the JDM engine. some people like it, others don't. I personally like it, it's actually a Cast Iron color and looks real good in person. On the other note, think the picture you are looking for is this one: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=3179&sort=1&cat=500&page=3 you can read/see some of the build of my RX at http://subaru.kacsh.com/ but I haven't updated it in forever, several things have been changed or added to the car, and I'm lazy so haven't updated it.

Ouch pulling out old pics of my setup and calling it "interesting".. I like to call it cheap engineering....still holding up just fine...but time for me to throw up some newer pics (with the recirc valve etc). The real one that was interesting was the first shot at me putting in the intercooler and having nothing work out..but then having to make something so I could drive it home, that piece of @#$& work looked like this: Thank God I didn't leave like that for more than a short trip home that night, and a short trip back to the shop to fix it. Feel free to laugh, I know I did before closing my hood that night.

blasphemy? lowriding a suby? anyone?
DrKrazy replied to BlindSight's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Haha was wondering when you were going to chime in, think Phil's is lowest older subaru I've ever seen in person. Looks great...this is an old picture from the 04' Colorado Meet (Looks extremely low next to the lifted brat): -
Aye for that price you can put me down for one too! Looks pretty good, and way better than stock. Good Job...and do keep me in mind if you do start making them.
-
Well if you make it all the way to CO and have a problem, give me a ring at (720) nine eight five three two three eight-Keith (had that same problem with my wife's legacy, ended up buying a new pulley and key, then actually tack welding the key into the crank since the crank got chewed up and wouldn't hold the key correctly)
-
Got the Oil cooler in (just needed an oil filter with a bigger gasket surface than OE). I also had to remove the hood latch support to fit the Oil cooler in, and will have to get a 3 inch piece of metal welded in because the hood is a tad floppy atm. New Radiator in and working great. Electric fan didn't work out since I was an idiot and thought I could just get another Subie A/C fan, well that doesn't fit in front of all the pulleys etc so clutch fan still on there for now. Flogged it hard with the A/C on and barely got over halfway(and that was sitting at a long stop light), stayed well below halfway the whole time while I was moving. So new radiator + oil cooler=Good Stuff!
-
Ok well after getting my A/C and everything running great, and out comes the 100+ degree days. Well even without running the A/C the RX is getting to 3/4 hot on the highway. Runs halfway just scooting around town. Well checked the radiator and it needs replaced, so have a new one to be picked up today. Since I will be pulling my radiator etc, I think I will finally throw in my flex-a-lite oil cooler (had it for like 8 months now, yea I'm lazy) and take off the clutch fan and replace it with an electric at the same time. Question is anyone else running the flex-a-lite oil cooler? And does the OE Subaru oil filters work with it or am going to a typical chevy 350 oil filter? Yea guess I should just break out the box and read..but again lazy. Going to be a tight fit with A/C condenser also..shew gotta love the weekend projects at 100 degrees outside.

Coolant Leak from Exhaust Bolt
DrKrazy replied to ShockingChicken's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yea only problem with the JB-Weld solution I saw was you may never get that bolt out again...but as my brother said "well damn, might as well try to rig it before dropping tons of cash". But I just went for the new engine anyways since I did have the cash for it and that engine was getting tired. -
Coolant Leak from Exhaust Bolt
DrKrazy replied to ShockingChicken's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That was the same exact problem with the engine that was originally in my RX. I thought the same thing that is was coming from someplace else...nope it was coming from the bolt. I did a coolant pressure test to rule out any other leaks and it started leaking worse with pressure in the system. When I took the engine out to replace it, and took that bolt out....out came a bunch of coolant from the bolt hole, not the exhaust. Upon further inspection there was a crack in the hole that was letting coolant get into the bolt hole. I found it strange but said whatever since I was putting a JDM in it anyways. My brother however suggested that I could put some (not much) jb-weld in there and then stick the bolt back in and let it cure overnight. That might be a good fix for it, never tried it since I just replaced the whole engine but maybe you might want to if indeed you do see some cracking in the bolt hole. -
Colorado has got to be up there, Roo's everywhere. There is 14 on my block that I count on a daily basis. Another 3 on the next road (including an 80 brat that was for sale at one point, still waiting a bit more to go offer him cash for it). 2 in my driveway, my next neighbors have matching turbo legacy's (one white, one red). When I lived in Bailey 3/4 of the vechiles were subaru's, others were ford and chevy trucks. I also park in a row of Subaru's at work. Of course my RX is the oldest one but whatever. Only way to truly know would prob be to contact SOA.

Howdy Everybody
DrKrazy replied to legacywarwagon's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Welcome a board! Always good to see more people from the area popping there heads in. Again welcome and yea just shoot out your questions. Some of the nicest and most knowledgable Subaru folks are right here on this board. -
Looking hot Cab, you've come a really long way with that RX and done one heck of a good job on it. Can't wait to see it in person someday.

How good are these "JDM engines" ?
DrKrazy replied to gotime242's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have one in my RX, but I stripped it down when I got it and put all new gaskets/seals/belts/tensioners/water pump/oil pump/on and on, so I knew I wouldn't have to touch it for awhile. Runs like clockwork, have around 4k-5k on it now with some hard driving and still runs great. I expect it to be a good engine for along time, or at least hold up for a year or two while I rebuild the original engine for some real power (or get an engine from the above mentioned CCR). Oh and the nice thing...doesn't leak a drop of oil (yet, give it another 10-20k). Not sure I would put a JDM engine in without changing the seals, outer gaskets, timing belts and water pump at least. Gotta remember these engines have been sitting in a warehouse for a long time. I also went through heck trying to find at least a Gen 2 engine, and a guarantee from the people that it would be a Gen 2 or Gen 3. Had to tell them all how to tell the difference in the heads. When I found one with a Gen 2 in stock I bought it. On a side note: 150k is pretty good, as long as you don't have any other problems I would just replace anything you still see that needs it and run with it until you really need an engine. You might hit 300k with hardly any problems. -
Colorado Subaru Clubs
DrKrazy replied to thogan32's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Yes and no, we kinda started one and have had a few meets. Actually it's about time we had another one since the last one was what in Jan? Anyways..there is actually a Colorado and Surrounding Areas Subaru Owners website Rocky Mountain Roo's. Hasn't gotten used much but only a few people know about it...kinda my fault. There is a ton of us from Colorado on the USMB including the guy who runs the USMB (ShawnW, great guy). The last 2-3 meets have been held at Red Rocks..if we are going for another one soon maybe someplace different? Would be nice to start planning for a Big meet so we can get everyone from all over the state/surrounding areas together. Still itching to see Shawn's Vana-Roo too, and would love to see Cab's RX if he comes down from Wyo. -

Looks hot! I like those wheels, would put them on my RX anyday. -
Also listening closely...since I need to pull my broken one and fix some rust on the pillars before I can install (or have someone install) a new one. Good thread..
