Not a big problem, just need to replace your timing belts (yes there is 2 of them, only one is probably broken but replace them both while in there). The EA82T's are non-interference engines so nothing should've happened. You will need to tear down to the timing covers and remove them. Not a big or hard job just takes a bit of time. While your in there you might want to replace your cam/crank seals and maybe your tensioners/waterpump just for the hell of it. I think there is a good write up about changing timing belts in the USRM. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/article.php?a=24

Take off your distributor cap and bump the engine with starter to see if your rotor moves. Chances are it's not going to which means you have a broken timing belt on that side. Report back and let us know and we can help troubleshoot further if needed. Normally a broken timing belt is the first thing most of us guess at.

Hey guys, Just putting out a request to see if there is anyone near Cortez, CO (near the 4 corners) that could drop by a friend's house and help her troubleshoot her 85 4wd Carb'd GL Wagon. I've been trying to do the best I can for her over the phone but it's just not working without being in front of it. Since I'm in the middle of buying a house and moving I don't have the time to make the long trip out there to her. Sounds like it's something simple, or maybe a bad carb..but here is the full story. This car has been sitting for 3 years after it brokedown with a bad coil I think it was. The carb had just been rebuilt on the car a year before that. Her justy is finally giving up the ghost on her so she is trying to get this car back on the road. She got the coil fixed and proceeded to drive it 3 hours back to her house from where it was stored. It was doing fine till it choked out on her. Ended up finally getting it home but is barely running now. Can get it to start and idle fine most of the time but it will bog out as soon as she tries to drive it. The EGR light is on (and has been for a long time) but her Solenoid broke, is rigged up atm but wouldn't think it would be causing this problem (though she does need another one which I need to grab from a JY for her) So far she has replaced the coil, plugs, fuel filter, and maybe some other things. It sounds like it's misfiring from over the phone (LOL), so I gave her some things to replace (which she is doing now since there was rust in the cap, she just called me back while I was writing this)..cap, rotor, plug wires...but I think it maybe something to do with the carb/fuel pump since she says she can keep it running while driving by pumping the gas????. I don't want to keep telling her to try this and that...when she really needs to spend her money on replacing seals, belts, and hoses. So anyways just seeing if there is someone out there that can drop by and check it out. I will defintely make it worth your time 12pk or whatever you want. I'm not as familar with the carbed EA82 since I have never owned one, all mine have been FI. Or if you guys have any other suggestions on what it might be throw them at me.. She also has an 2wd EFI Justy that's got a bad CV, and some other problems which is why she wants her wagon back. Plus she has a family to haul around and the justy doesn't fit alot of people easily.

Holding up an Intercooler
DrKrazy replied to Myxalplyx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't know it helps at all since I'm using a different IC than everyone (I think) but I actually used two brackets with rubber bushings to hold mine up. One is bolted through the old spare tire holder/turbo heatshield thing. The other one is bolted through the top/back of the engine bay where the hood closes down. Hard to explain so hopefully these pictures will help a bit. Mine moves with the engine but just barely. I also sealed the hood so when it shuts it seals the scoop around the IC and forces the air to go through the IC instead of around it. -
I would say that right before 5k was the big Fuel cut gremlin. Over all though still very impressive numbers Will!. Few more mods to my RX and I will take it to a dyno here in town. Would take it now to compare but don't have the dollars to be dropping on dyno's. And with my bone stock exhaust I doubt it would be much more than JWX's stock RX (might be less). Keep on impressing us!

Free stuff colorado, come and get it
DrKrazy replied to kingbobdole's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Got a turbo downpipe in there too? Would like to get my hands on that plus the cross-over...time to make custom ones for the RX. Let me know! -

A driver's side taillight for the RX? Is that what I'm seeing??? Plz tell me it's for sale....been looking for one since I bought my RX, so far they get snagged up before I can get them....let me know if it is for sale. And yes very hard to find a brand new one, hard to find even a good used one. -
Ohh nice score Skip...looks like a beauty...how about some more pics? I love those years of brats and would almost give up my RX to find one like that!..almost.

Went to the Depot with the boss to pick up some shevling and junk for work...and outside there is this super nice hatch just sitting there waiting to be loaded with some stuff. I stop dead in my tracks and tell my boss to wait so I can talk to the owner. Well he was in too much of hurry and wanted to go..so I didn't get a chance to meet the owner...but I did get a terrible picture with my cell phone. Picture doesn't do it justice..this car was pristine looking.

Couldn't pass it up not 100% done deal yet but basically. http://denver.craigslist.org/car/65929464.html After talking with the owner the car only has 120k on it but has no power anymore...could mean anything, but I have a spare engine if needed. 5spd, turbo, GL-10 with sunroof (that's broken out atm), grey on grey with decent interior & exterior (or so it sounds). Has been sitting for awhile..nothing new there. Will probably go pick her up on Friday or Saturday...funny thing is my wife walking in on me telling the guy "You can consider it sold"....whoops forgot to mention it first, just got too excited about picking up another one. Luckily the wife just laughed. Will get you guys pictures as soon as I actually see it when I go to pick it up.

Intercooling for Dummies. (I did it)
DrKrazy replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Indeed I do...you can see some older but possibly better pics at my RX build website in my sig (which is sadly not up to date since I started working on the RockyMountainRoos.net site)..or look at these slightly newer ones. I used a "T" from a coolant flush kit to tap into idle air hose to run to the BOV which is stuck right in the side of the air intake. -

I agree with moving it foward a bit, but it looks hot man! Better than my "Hardware store/Exhaust pieces" setup and mine works great. Keep it up -
hill hold or no hill hold?
DrKrazy replied to karinvail's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To each his own... I personally love it also, living in Colorado most places you drive are hills or mountains so I use mine all the time. Not that I don't know how to drive a stick but just because I'm half lazy (ok more than half) and if I don't have to hold down the brake pedal while sitting on a hill waiting for a light to turn green...well I think that's one nice option . But I do see that it could be a problem while off-roading but then again I highly doubt Subaru had offroading in mind while designing it. I have had one go bad on me on a previous Sube and that wasn't cool but I should've been paying attention to my brake fluid levels and I would've known before it fully went out. -
Not sure if you have room or not but I have a small 8" fan underneath my IC that I have wired to a relay/switch. Not only does it help suck air through the IC but also blows the heat away from the IC in the engine compartment. I don't race my car at all but I do run the IC fan while in traffic and on hot days. Seems to help alot, I have checked after sitting in traffic with it off...definite heat soak, checked after running the fan while in traffic and the IC was still cool on all sides. Maybe a solution for you, but my IC doesn't take up as much room as yours.

Advantages of RX over other models?
DrKrazy replied to Phaedras's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm already here in Colorado and have to see this..Beef give me a PM if I can come swing by/get together sometime and check this out. I have to say that's one hell of a mod. Might have to plan that in my RX's future. -
EA82T + Turbo Lag = teh SUCK!
DrKrazy replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The MAF adapter that works is from an early 90's nissan sentra. I got one for a late 90's nissan accidently but it worked fine, just had to drill new mounting holes. The one for an early 90's nissan is "supposed to" bolt right on with some longer bolts. There is a few pictures in my gallery with the adapter + K&N that I used. There is however some people on the board who think it's worthless to go that route, because of the heat of the engine. I however noticed much improvement in the turbo, low end power, and most important I started getting 2-3 more mpg after I installed mine. Plus it makes the turbo and bov (if you have one) much louder which I like also. -
RX Parts? Yea always needed...could use some nice seats and a taillight few other things...so yea if you part it out looks like you have a ton of interest.

? for you guys with a MAF air filter adapter
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I can only speak for myself but below my cone filter there is several big holes drilled through my fenderwell and it blows cool air from where the original housing sucked it in (or at least I hope it does. When you look at the original air intake/silencer in the fenderwell it's hard to believe a turbo car could breathe through it. You also have to remember that the EA82T is a turbo engine, which means as soon as the air hits the turbo it's going to get super heated anyways. Which is why alot of us run Intercoolers. Just my 2 cents, well maybe 1 cent since it's early and I just woke up. And yes I agree on throttle response, didn't gain any noticeable power but the response is much much better and the car can breath in the upper RPM's alot better too. Plus there is always that Bling factor of having a K&N that's visible -
? for you guys with a MAF air filter adapter
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok so I installed it today, took way longer than I expected due to finding some other problems I had to take care of too. My adapter didn't bolt up (think I got the wrong year/make nissan) but I just drilled some new bolt holes through it. I had to cut about inch and half off the rubber of the K&N where it meets the adapter, and rotate the air intake a bit to make it fit. It fits though, and makes the turbo/recirc valve MUCH louder. Power seemed to improve a bit but nothing too noticeable. Pics for the masses: (for those wondering what the green wires are, they are extra grounds) -

DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Cool didn't know about the rubber gasket. I paid $53 for the adapter + K&N + shipping to my door off ebay. I'm not concerned about it fitting, I'll make it fit if necessary but I doubt I'll have to, there should be plenty of room for it. For those that were asking the K&N filter number is RU-3570, the adapter is for a 90's nissan. I will install it tomorrow since I have the day off and post pictures of it when I'm done so guys know how it fits. -
Okay so after noticing the difference of chopping out the airbox silencer and making swiss cheese of the bottom of the air box into the fenderwell (still looks stock from the top)..which was a bit of labor.....well screw it I went and bought: So my question is are you guys using a tad bit of sealant to mate the adapter to the MAF or justing bolting it straight up? I'm thinking just a nice small bead of sealant..
