15th it is then, we (if my wife and daughter want to come again) will be in the RX this time. Going to try and get my hood scoop on, recirc valve plumbed in, and everything else to totally finish the intercooler this next week since I'm off work (love that bonus of having the week between Christmas and New Years off). Plus try and button up some other stuff, anyone want to help cut a hole in my hood?(EDIT: Hood scoop is on and done) Any suggestions on where to go after and get something to eat and blab? I know a few places around there, and within short drives. Just depends on what people want to eat/drink and how many of us there will be.

Sweet thanks for the info Caleb, doesn't sound too bad and I was going to enlist the help of my brother-in-law the body guy to help if a six pack will coax him into it because I SUCK whens it come to any kind of body work. Have proven that in the past, but I think I can handle cutting the hole, was just worried about modification having to be done to the scoop or bending etc on the hood. Hope you don't mind but a couple more quick questions for ya.. Did you do anything to your hood where you cut it to prevent rust? Maybe just a quick primer coat? The one I bought is of course black, I was just going to leave it that way till the car gets repainted (but who knows when that will actually be). But I like your idea of painting with several coats to help make it stiffer, and maybe get it to match my white RX. Did you rattle can it or paint it with a spray gun? -
Hmm Jan 24th is a Monday so wouldn't work for me. I'm down for anytime really except for Jan 7th-10th (Moving my company) and Saturday Jan 16th is my Wife's B-day so that prob wouldn't be a good idea for me, although she might not care if it's during the day..she liked the last meet. I did think meeting at Red Rocks was cool, and there is plenty of places to catch a bite to eat or bars pretty close. Plus Red Rocks could be fun if it just happened to snow... I would like to see even more people at this one, so I'm game to meetup whereever is good for the whole.

Yep that's actually the exact one I just bought, how much of a pain in the butt was it to put on? Did you have to do any modification or sealing around it? Any heads up so I have what I need when mine comes is much appreciated. -
1988 Subaru GL SW does good!!!

That is actually a really good story to read after a long day at work. I'm sure the guy in the toyota will never look at another old subaru the same way again. I'm also sure his thoughts changed alot from the first time he saw you to the time you were pulling him out... Go Subaru Power! -
RX: EGR needed? Also q's on internals

Those are gen 2 heads with the EA82 that's underlined. The shortblock sounds 50/50 but is hard to say, how many miles were on the shortblock when this happened? Too bad you weren't able to do compression tests because of the screwed up side before you yanked it apart. -
Resurrecting an '88 GL-10 Turbo...
DrKrazy replied to SAR-baru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay how did you lose the freeze plug??? Did it pop cause your engine froze because of having water in it instead of antifreeze?..is so that would lead me to think you have a cracked block (I have experienced this, friend had forgot to put antifreeze back in his jeep after he blew a radiator hose, eventually got to well below freezing overnight and he blew his freeze plugs out, but also cracked his block :-\ )..thus the radiator draining straight into the oil pan, sincerely hope that's not your case. -

Thanks, As far as the hood scoop thinking I'll just pick up a cheapo ebay legacy/impreza replica one. I already have some shrouding that came with the IC that I can cut to fit for the inside of the hood to make sure all the air goes through the IC. Plus an electric fan that came with IC to pull air through it. There is room under the IC for the fan still so I think I will go ahead and install it for the heck of it. Extra air flow can't hurt. -

Ok third time is the charm right? Well had a few hours today between christmas shopping and family things so went at it. Also swapped out my moisture soaked headlights and the one with a huge pit in it for nice sparkly ones. Now it's looking good and down to minimal hose, took a sec or two off the turbo spool time. I did have to cut a small piece of hood bracing out that was hitting the intake hose sometimes and making a very annoying noise, but no big deal. Hopefully it's final now, except to bend a bracket to make it level again. Then I get the porsche recric valve plumbed in (piece of cake) and get my hood scoop on. What do you think now? Thanks, Vanislru your last idea worked out perfect as you can see below. Hood brace cut -

Yep your exact idea is what I'm going to do, it's actually alot tighter under the pipe going to the TB then it looks but it will fit. Was going to redo that part yesterday to but got distracted by the fog lights. I still need to plumb in the porsche recirc valve when it gets here so there will be a tad more changing but it's working really good for now. Just got home from a 50 mile test run and even without a hood scoop there is a definite difference. I imagine it is getting some airflow at highway speeds though just not much. Question for you guys: Does the recirc valve matter where it's put? In other words can I put it in a pipe between the turbo and IC since I'm going to need to repipe that anyways? Or does it need to be between the IC and tb? And then of course other side of it piped back to the air intake. My brain says it doesn't it matter just anywhere so it can relieve pressure in the system, am I right? (if that made any sense) -

Did some changing up today and now it's looks much better, got distracted a bit by a pair of fog lights that needed to go on to replace the missing stock ones. But it got all repiped from the IC to the intake. Here's what it looks like now: Just waiting till the porshce bypass valve gets here, and locate a hood scoop now. Plus replace any hoses with silicone hose once I gather some more cash. Overall I'm now satisfied at least, for never had installing one before I think it worked out okay. Thanks guys for all the info I got from all your posts on your intercoolers and installs it really helped. Sneaking in a pic of the new lights too: -

Have thought about it, but I'm not a welder so fabbing most of this without one. After I'm done today there should be 3 feet less hose so not worried about too much about it. No didn't throw away the modded intake plenum but I did chop off the tube I had welded on in a stupid attempt make a hose seal on a square surface, was too big for a hose to fit around anyways. -
Intercooler piping question...
DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Using plumbing fittings & exhuast pipe on mine right now too. And old radiator hose on the intake side temporarily unitl I fix it today hopefully. I will order replacement hoses from turbohoses after the holidays though (low cash), I thank Russ for that link they have everything I need. -
Well even after all my careful planning and pre-mockups it didn't fit at all the way I wanted. So my spare intake plenum that I had cut and had a pipe welded on to went to parts pile. I changed the whole setup once I actually started bolting things on to keep it farther away from the turbo. It became a headache and took me all day yesterday and I technically didn't finish. I like the way it sits now even though it makes some hoses longer than I had originally had it sitting, but it's in and functional (minus the hood scoop, still looking for that). But am going to redo the piping from the intercooler to the intake (IT TOTALLY SUCKS RIGHT NOW) but had to just throw it together real quick since my old plan didn't work out. Going to cut it at the IC and run it straight to the intake in one quick swoop. Will work on it today if I get time. Still have to plumb in the porsche recirc valve, install the electric fan underneath the IC, add another bracket for the IC, and of course find and install a hood scoop...shew it's all worth it! Small test drive=Actual noticeable difference, turbo did take longer to spool but it actually did feel like it had more power when it kicked in. Maybe that's just me, I don't even have a hood scoop yet. Although it was not happy shifting gears with no bov or recirc valve installed. Here is a pic of how it stands now..will look much different soon I hope.

Way to go Arch!!! That really shows that you can do anything if you put enough effort forth. That thing must really be able to haul just barely getting on it. -

DrKrazy replied to ShawnW's topic in Subaru Transplants
Wow looking pretty good there Shawn, was wondering when you were going to get us some pics of the build. -
Yep broke 3 of those myself doing my engine swap, I now have stash of a few of them for future breakage..lol. Seems everytime I take my intake plenum off I snap one, but I re-routed the hoses a bit this last time to hopefully avoid it from now on.

Yep looks like it's off a supra, looks almost identical to the MR2 one that I'm putting on my RX, yours is just a bit larger. From what I've read they are very well designed intercoolers for being stock for toyotas. Plus they can had for fairly cheap. Hmm a Subaru ice racer, basically only see Jeeps out here. Go teach them Jeeps a lesson! That sounds like a one heck of a fun time..we MUST have pictures when it's done.

DrKrazy replied to subyrally's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep Tex is right, but if truly needed-> JDM motors can be had for fairly cheap if your not set on having a rebuilt engine, in the $450-750 range. I feel your pain though man, sometimes nothing can go right, but hold tight things will circle round your way. -
OMG! Guess what I got to drive today...

Co-worker had to take his 04' Impreza in for some work at the local Subaru dealership so they gave him a loaner car...oh and what a loaner car they gave him. Woot! an 05 Legacy GT 2.5 Turbo, and I got to take it for a spin...OMG I tell ya almost makes me want to go out and take a car loan and move myself over to the new gen forum..this car was so damn FAST and handled so well it was incredible. Subaru defintely impressed me with this car. Will almost be sad to climb back into the RX tonight after work...proof is in the terrible pics taken with my cell phone.. -

DrKrazy replied to schollajef22's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welcome! I would at least check (I would just replace) every single cooling hose and belts on the engine. Unless they all look really good and don't show any cracks, etc but your call. Most cars that I obtained that have been sitting tend to blow out cooling hoses very quickly if not replaced. Give it a good tune-up (NGK Spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, cap & rotor). Go run it around, more than anything it needs to be driven it's a SUBARU! Do you have any maint. history on the car? Last time the timing belts were replaced, etc? -
Yep Red=Cruise control vacuum unit What are the vacuum lines that are running under the turbo light unit going to though? In other words what else is right under it? (wondered what that was while trying to figure my vacuum mess out)
