Where to tee in for a boost gauge?
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did that, was really bouncy..maybe it's the el cheapo gauge but didn't do it when I had it installed in line with the throttle body. Worked good there just caused me to snap the solenoid anytime I removed the intake plenum. -
Ok I have tried a few different spots but so far but have avoided hacking into the wastegate. Had a great place before one of the vacuum solenoids but it keeps causing me to snap the solenoid end off ..So I moved it, But can't seem to get a really accurate (too low) or steady(Bouncing) reading. So where have you guys tee'd into?

Thanksgiving Weekend Projects
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
haha don't feel so bad WJM, so far I went to try to measure up for the IC and broke another one those damn solenoid valves while pulling off my intake plenum.. ..damn those things are brittle, gotta do some hose re-routing so that doesn't happen again, and yes so far nothing has gotten done but a broken part...out of spare ones..off to the JY today if they are open (crossing my fingers) -
A riddle for you all...RX vs GL-10
DrKrazy replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Umm the stickers that say RX? only thing left that the others didn't mention really.. Edit: hmm could it be that the coupe's actually have a body structure where the tail lights go to re-inforce the tail end structure a bit more. Where as the wagon doesn't since the tail gate opens there? NM basically what carfreak was saying -
Got yours planned? Well I have my engine basically all done. Will button up some last minute stuff, and change the oil again etc. So thought I might try and tackle my MR2 IC this weekend or get some miles on the car if it doesn't snow too much..So what are you guys up to or working on this weekend?
-
Good call on the tail lights Qman, will have to scope that out on mine. I seem to recall these tail lights being glued or sealed in though?(broken one or two trying to get them out at a JY). Maybe I can reseal them from the inside? And yes can't say you fixed it without telling us how JWX...inquiring minds want to know....

Well at least on my RX, it doesn't leak under rain/snow conditions but under higher pressure wash it leaks bad from the bottom portion where it seals up against the deck where it's flat above the tail lights. It then leaks down into the little cargo cubbie. I noticed that after the first really good scrubing on my RX, and that little swishing noise your talking about was 2" of water in my cargo cubbie. Funny how there was no drainage holes either in the cargo cubbies?..there is now in mine at least (thanks to my drill). I looked for some adjustments and didn't really see any, might be some in the latch to hold it tighter. My seal still feels real good but doesn't seem to seal good there, bad design I guess. Thinking that in that stretch where it's flat just can't hold a good seal. Interested to hear solutions myself. Edit: after re-reading that, I've had too much to drink but got my point across..

Around $10/yr to register it, around $25/yr to have the DNS service done for it (if you don't have your own DNS servers, which I don't, just my own web server). Can be done cheaper I'm sure but that's through the services I use for a few of my sites and a few friends sites that are on my server. Don't take me as an expert by any means though, just an IT guy that likes to screw around and happens to have a server sitting at his house. I would be willing to build up a website/message board just for the Rocky Mountain Roo's if we wanted it..just to focus on mainly Colorado Subaru stuff, get togethers, trail rides, junk yards, for sales..etc. What do you guys think? Of course the USMB is and always will be our home but maybe we can keep some of our more area specific stuff off here then. -
Well this is kinda funny so thought I would share it. So I put the new engine in the RX the other day right..and it's been running great. Well I came out today after work and turned the key to start it, crank crank crank...crank crank crank. Darn something's not right. Can smell I'm getting fuel, quick check shows I'm getting a weak spark..Well this seems alittle Familar. Keep checking connections, make sure rotor is actually turning (timing belt), etc etc..all a sudden.. ....trippy waves of a flashback to a few years ago to 3 days after putting my new engine in my truck... Driving down the highway enjoying much horsepower under my feet after several days of grueling hard work at getting the engine in. Engine suddenly dies and I pull off to side of the road. Hmm, got fuel, weak spark (if any at all). Spend hours looking around to no avail. Bah! Tow the truck home, spend 2 days replacing brand new parts with other brand new parts. Nothing..Suddenly I look down and notice my tach wire is welded to my header on the back where you can't see it really well. Yank it off, truck starts right up! Doh!.... ...trippy waves of flashback back to present day and the snowflakes landing on my face... Look down at the coil, follow the yellow tach wire..Ah ha! Got Slightly pulled up against the body and rubbed off enough to ground out. I'm sure that happened while I was running the boost gauge hose . Piece of electrical tape and the car fired right up. So that's my new engine curse..from now on when I do an engine and it breaks down in the next week I will head straight for the tach wire. Ahh life teaches you so much..

Haha whoops suppose I should've asked that, guess I just assume when it's leaking oil from the front that it's an EA82..just too common.
-
Yea prob your Camshaft seals and/or Crankshaft seal leaking, and yes they are fairly easy to replace. Follow your steps, tear down the timing covers and remove the pulley's. Replace seals, build back-up. Fairly straight forward and doesn't take that long. Most of us had to do at one point in time (if not several times).

RX Performance Rally Car
DrKrazy replied to Do It Sidewayz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
11th out of 50? That's super impressive...way to hand it to them in an older Subaru! As you can tell I think we are all SUPER curious about the way you have your RX setup and please please provide us with some more pics. Oh yeah EA82T Power! -

Looks Fantastic!...Anyone own the rockymountainroos domain yet or thought about registering it? I'll host it on my server if we need it, or buy it and host it (and point it straight here for now or something). On a side note there should be an RX burning up the mountain on a dirt road in the background (like Pikes-Peak Racing...haha). -
Yea there is a ton of them here, and in the JY's too.

Best music for wrenching on the Subaru
DrKrazy replied to diluded000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I tend to keep it to the classic rock or smooth reggae. Something that keeps me nice, calm, cool and collected. But yea it has to be loud to cover up the air compressor and the really, really bad singing that's coming from under the car.... -
Well if your talking actual engine specs as far as hp/torque I will point you here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/specs/mechanical/engine-specs.html As far as actual feeling really fast.. well..For the weight of the cars the EA82T's are quite good actually. They can get these cars moving. The turbo won't make your neck snap by any means, but 75mph is cruising speed..120 is not un-heard of. Kinda have to get on them a bit, up in the RPM range to get to the power, but that doesn't bother me. I'm sure some of the mods the other guys have done have cured that problem though. The others who actually race their's will have better info for you.

Just another RX pic...nothing special...
DrKrazy replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Looks smoking hot...that's the first picture I've seen of your RX. That thing is amazingly nice. Mine is sitting outside drooling now. Just climbed out of mine for a quick lunch run at work and was commenting how completely dirty it was after driving through the snow storm on the weekend. You know that so dirty where you get near it and all a sudden all your clothes are covered in dirt too kinda dirty? Sucks it needs a bath but supposed to snow again tonight/tomorrow..oh well. -
That is Sweet! Where in the world did you find that? My daughter's old electric jeep might fit right under it....

RX Motor Swap Done! Well Almost...long w pics!
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sell my RX? Thought hasn't crossed my mind yet and hopefully never will. Shoot I barely just bought it a few months ago. Plus I specifically bought an RX, to dump money into it over time. To restore it to as nice as possible because I'm a crazy (or at least that's what some people think, but not you guys). -
RX Motor Swap Done! Well Almost...long w pics!
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok got it all figured out, was just too tired last night and was being an idiot. Plus I broke a vacuum solenoid or whatever it is called on the intake. Plus mis-hooked up a couple vacuum line. All perfect now and everything is running 100%. New boost gauge verifying that 7-8psi stock boost is working perfectly. I tell you the sound of NO lifter ticking is great. Finished Pic for you guys..now to figure how to install the MR2 intercooler. Whatever the heck this thing is is what I broke, yanked off old intake to replace: -
Yep after 2 days of working my rump roast off the new motor is in and it's back on the road and running great. Well almost great, I must've missed a couple of vacuum lines and will investigate that today (Sucks it's snowing quite hard today). The turbo light isn't working?? (and I know the turbo is working, sounds way better then it did before..woosh). Need to take care of few other odds and ends like adjusting the new clutch and retorquing a few bolts here and there. I will say that in typical "my kinda luck" style everything that could've went wrong did, so it took much much longer then it should've. But it's out of my brother's garage and back at home. Investigation of the old engine while pulling it led me to discovering that when I went to pull the y pipe that the stud came right out of the head along with a ton of coolant. Also while pulling the wiring harness off the old intake I noticed the intake leaking coolant on that same head, so for the heck of it went to pull the intake real quick..yea broken intake bolt..coolant leaking into cylinders. Plus seemed that this engine had been taken apart fairly recently, but yea at least that head is totally jacked. Here is some pics from my build, will add some finished pics later was too late and too tired last night to remember to take anymore. All and all was worth it! A Big Hole in My RX!!!! Broken Intake Bolt on old Engine Big Mess I made Pretty new engine before installation

Mid 90's Integra VS. 88' RX..& Thanks!
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Wasn't really meant as a brag, kinda but not really. I was getting at the point I made further down. Which is that I understand now why people have chosen thosen those cars for rally/race cars. I never quite understood why anyone has dumped so much cash into these for actual racing. Was trying to keep things short and not go into that. I apologize for offending anyone. Done defending myself -
Well had a fun ride home from work today. Pulled up to a stop light near my house on my way home from work. All I can hear next to me is the sound of one those "Fart" (that's what I call them) rice mufflers getting revved to hell. So I glance over at what appears to be some sort of mid 90's Integra under a bunch of fiberglass ornaments and stickers of all sorts. Not to mention the 2 foot tall metal push bar wing on the back. Of course at the wheel is a 16-18yr old kid with a few of his friends in his car. I couldn't help but to chuckle a tad and my teenage years came flying back (I'm only 25 wasn't that long ago)..well WTF I'm putting my new engine in in just a few days right?. I will honestly say this IS the hardest I have driven this car since I bought it. I have really kinda babied it since I saw it was leaking a small amount of coolant from the exhaust bolt on the head. I was quite impressed actually! First time the turbo kicked in 1st gear on me (I know, I'm a lame rump roast), and it was right off the bat..well before I knew it I was in 4th gear and he was behind me. Barely, but behind. Whoops missed my turn, Whoops I'm doing 85 in a 40mph zone..ahh I miss being 16. Good Notes: Ran incredible and was actually impressed, makes me wonder why I'm actually swapping motors. Oh yeah 200k and probable bad headgasket. Bad Notes: 200k Transmission doesn't like to shift into 3rd under racing conditions. Just doesn't want to sync to well. I didn't search after and buy an RX to build a race car, I did it because I love these more than any other 80's Subes. They have a slightly different style, handle slightly different, have slightly different options, and most important you don't see them everyday. But now I see why several of you have chosen them for rally cars and race cars. May sound strange but I am building mine back to stock, but adding the oil cooler/intercooler and a few other things for reliability not for more power. Trying to keep the looks as stock as possible. To end this terribly long rant..Thanks to everyone on this board for giving the rest of us the knowledge and ideas to keep and make our cars the best out there! Without you guys we wouldn't know where to begin, would get stuck in the middle, and wouldn't know how to finish half the stuff we work on. Most of my ideas come straight off this board!

DAMN! Your one lucky guy....it's hard as hell to find good seats let alone good RX seats!
