91 Loyale 4wd 3sp AT question
DrKrazy replied to XSNRG's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That sounds about right, my DL sedan didn't have a tach in it and wasn't 4wd. But had the 3spd AT in it and at 65 sounded like it was at about 3800-4000rpm. Those transmissions just are not geared for highway speeds. Edit: Now that I think about it alittle more it does seem alittle high, was trying to remember driving my DL down the highway. Sorry sold it about a month ago. -
RX Motor update and secret HP bonus..PICS!
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bah! Was supposed to be getting my new engine all in this weekend but have been delayed by the dreaded FLU :-\ (Somehow I always get sick on weekends or when not working anyways wth?). Plus my oil cooler hasn't showed up yet. Oh well have vacation days I got to burn before the end of the year anyways so taking thursday-friday off next week here for a nice extended weekend to get it done nice and slow. Also been checking out some electronic boost controllers to run after I figure out what I'm going to do about the IC. Any suggestion on what kind to run? Looking for a relatively cheap one $100-200 with at least a hi-lo setting, but want reliability. Another Side Note:Local exhaust shop qouted me $745 to create me a complete new catless exhuast system (car is registered deep in the mountains where it doesn't and will never have to pass emissions). That is header, DP, 2.5 inch all the way back(after the turbo)...that will have to wait a bit cash flow hurting atm. -
Oh yeah! Always scary the first time you try to start a car you know nothing about. Glad to hear it might actually be a runner, instead of a klunker. Starting to sound more and more like a good score Cab..

ACK!!! That's not what we want to hear coming from you WJM! Maybe someone else but you?!? Come on now, wasn't this a thrown together 170k+ motor? Shoot I'll give you the 200k+ motor out of my RX if you want another of one of those. Runs fine just a bit of lifter noise and some coolant leak from an exhaust bolt. Kabooms tend to happen to 170k motors at 12psi I would think. I have faith that you are the man to get it back on the road in no time though.

That seems to be my thoughts too, after looking at my RX and a wagon outside. By a few inches, of course the wagon is a neighbor's so can't measure it unless I break the window (haven't met the owner yet) Defintely shorter in length than my wife's 94, but that doesn't count.

here's my story, and how I got another car.
DrKrazy replied to subaru_styles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Pretty sweet, I think it looks pretty nice in red. Kinda dying for the RX kit but looks good just the way it is. If needed you can PM me for a Hard Drive too, got 3 or 4 close to brand new Hitachi(IBM) 80gig'ers sitting around here someplace that came out of my server that just got upgraded. Looks like a good deal for the price. Sucks the wagon isn't on road was just showing off pictures of it to a guy at work! Told him see older Subaru wagons can have super nice style..no pun intended. -
Ok after staring at my engine compartment with my brother for awhile I think we came up with a pretty good idea, so let's hear your ideas on it: Remove the Electric and Manual Fans Remove the AC Condenser Put a nice large IC inbetween the Radiator and the engine, where the fans were Put 2 electric high cfm fans where the condenser was, blowing air through the radiator and IC. The Piping shouldn't be too hard with the A/C pump gone and the location of the IC. Only thing I can't be certain of is getting enough cool air through the radiator to the IC. What do you guys think? Not going for super performance here, just nice cheap hidden IC for alittle HP and engine life.
-
I ultimately have to say wow, ok so I'm no math genius. Nor have I taken anything like that into consideration at all. Incredible information and well put, but missing a few things..your ideas on what to use and where to mount it at. I'm super curious to everyone's ideas before I go start chopping into anything on my RX.
-
Well now I'm thinking what if just ditch the A/C Condenser all together? since I need to make room for my oil cooler also. That frees up quite a bit of room in front there, might be able to squeeze both an IC and an oil cooler up front. Granted they would both have to be fairly small, but my oil cooler setup is pretty small anyways 12x7x3/4. Plus I got smoked by Mitsu EVO today and was willing to blow up my motor to keep up with him (since I have that new one in the garage). Motor held together :-\ , but still got stomped.
-
Had to run outside real quick to check how much room there was, and your right there is hardly any room behind the dam. Too bad is always nice to keep that IC a secret. Not to mention the fact they use gravel on roads here and it beats the living heck outta the whole front of your car. That would make me a tad leary of a FMIC, but would just have to make sure it had a good fine protection screen over it. So has anyone done a front mount on an EA82T yet?
-
Haha looks like you guys were having some fun today!
-
Ok I'm super glad you brought this up, I have been looking at different front mount IC's for awhile now (since I'm still against the idea of cutting a hole in my RX's hood, even for a cool scoop). My questions were: Under the bumper in front of the air dam(front ground efx) how long does it actually survive gravel/rocks/mud/etc? can it be put behind the air dam in the front and still have enough airflow(mounted behind the small holes in the air dam)? Last but not least I'm certain the piping would be a total pain in you know what but with that much length in the intake system how does it effect the turbo spool/lag time? Sorry for slight hi-jack there WJM, but thought it fell in the same conversation and have been looking and virtually those same IC's.

Everyone loves pics...so here are a few(56k=die)
DrKrazy replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think the whole car looks Sweet! The roof rack just blends right in with the lines of everything else, wouldn't look right without it. Just my 2 cents though. On the other hand though the engine doesn't look too hot at all, or looks like it got way too hot! -

DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Welp it's basically ready now except a few odds and ends that I need off the current engine. Decided I will wait and keep the current Alt/AC setup to make things easier for restoring the AC someday. Aiming to slap it all in with a new clutch next weekend as long as the oil cooler setup gets here this next week. Spent so much time hand cleaning those parts, that high temp paint better hold (I'm sure it won't). So here is another teaser picture... -
Differences, JDM vs. American EA82T?
DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have to go back on my word again, upon further inspection after bolting on the JDM intake last night and starting to run all the hoses I realized there was 1 more difference...the vaccum line to the brake booster is on the other side of the intake, no big deal just unscrew it and move it to other side of intake where there is a cap and move cap back to other side. -
Mine has AC (or had AC) the compressor is gone..all though my JDM motor did come with one. And yes it's same thing where the compressor sits on the outside of the alt like you describe. Still haven't decided if I'm going to keep it that way when I do the swap here. Haven't even decided if I'm going to reinstall the AC or not.

W00T!!! The RX is HERE!!!
DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Congratz and Welcome to the RX club, as small as we may be. Glad you rescued that poor rare black one from the crusher too! I may have a line on a parts RX down here in Denver also, is totalled in the front but the rear glass is all still there. Having a tough time talking the guy into selling it or parts so far (Sucks too has a perfect interior that I want bad!) -
New RX stickers? Where to get..
DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would be interested in getting a set also, one thing though...on my car the RX is in red the rest of the lettering is in gray. And I will be getting the car repainted in the next 6 months (after the rust repair) so this was defintely on my list. Let me know a price if you can duplicate it Mc. -

DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Forgot to take my camera with me but I took the JDM intake/throttle body setup out to my RX and sat there for about 35mins studying them, and came up with 0 differences. I even checked a few part numbers on different things that I could see and they were the same. I'm so convinced it's the same exact setup that I'm just going to save myself some time and use the JDM intake and throttle body setup. Well I did lie, there was 1 difference..the wiring harness was cut on the JDM engine and is not in my RX of course lol. -

DrKrazy replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I just went through all this so I'll put in what I find out, Remember I'm going off what I have been told: After talking to about 12 different companies that sell the JDM engines, all the Longblocks are the supposed to be the exact same as the US models. They said only the accessories were different (emissions is much meaner overthere, plus the climate the cars are built to run at??). I ordered mine as a complete engine and I didn't pay too much attention while tearing down the whole top end but I can honestly say I didn't notice anything different right off the top. Looked like I could I just bolt it right in and hook it up. I know for a fact that my brother bolted an EJ18 JDM right into his impreza with no problems. I will further inspect the intake, and other parts and get back to you tomorrow with more info and pics of the JDM EA82T parts. As for prices they ranged from about $500 for a longblock to about $700 for a complete engine. I only went the cheap way this time, and am already saving for a good CCR engine. See this post for some sources: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=23759&highlight=JDM+Motors I got mine from a place called Japan Motors Inc -
Im in a WORLD OF HURT... My 88 XT died

damn almost thought I knew what I was talking about...but makes sense once I actually thought about it. Hint don't answer posts while at work, and you won't make yourself look stupid LOL. -

SPFI engine, yank off intake, bolt yours on. Others will chime in if I'm wrong, but you should be totally in the clear for that. -
front strut isn't bolted?
DrKrazy replied to bajajourney's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My guess is yes it's going to start causing some problems, and if it comes dislodged while driving at 60mph could end up being extremely dangerous. (Imagine your strut falling out enough to get jammed up someplace else, say through the side of your engine, tire, etc.. that may be extreme but you never know) Plus it will start hammering the heck out of the mounting points. I may be wrong but if it's not bolted down at the top then it's essentially not doing any good anyways. Bolt that sucker down one way or another. -
Go for it, that would be a nice score at an auction, did the motor look like it survived the crash?
