the distributers rotor set screw on Loyale problem
DrKrazy replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bah the cleaning machine(wife) got to the box before I did. Just to make sure we are actually having the same problems and not exact opposite, is your rotor longer in height than the rest they have given you? by like a half inch or more? If so I will go right back to that store and ask. I love that carquest since it's actually the local warehouse for this side of town. -
Hmm, spare 2.2 engines and what to do with them?

the distributers rotor set screw on Loyale problem
DrKrazy replied to lagwagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I went through that same problem with my old 87' GL-Turbo and then just this past weekend on my DL. Seems they can never find the right one, I ended up going to the local CarQuest and they asked 2 questions..is it a hitachi distributor? and does it have a set screw?...I answered yes to both and they handed me the right one. Will go see if I still have the box for a part number. The question I want to know is how many different rotors could there possibly be for 85-92 subes geez. -
Well looks like I will have 1 if not 2 low mileage 2.2 engines sitting around soon. Long story, but someone screwed up the crank while doing timing belts before I bought my wife's legacy. So I bought a 60k mile motor to put into it, am taking the really good running (but pulley welded to crank) 110k motor out. On top of that I ran by yet another complete and running 130k mile motor with all the wiring harnesses etc..Now the question is do I save them for my XT project if I find one? Would try to put it in my 2wd DL but not worth it, and that 1.8 only has 133k anyways. Suggestions..I like the 85-90 Subies but the transmissions don't bolt up to the 2.2's right?

I live in Lakewood, which is about 10miles west of Denver and I know there is quite a few others on this board within 20miles of me I'm sure.

I looked through the calendar and posts and couldn't find anything on us Co sube owners meeting up??? It's Colorado should be tons of us Sube owners on here. So what do you all think about meeting up on a weekend soon and just introducing ourselves and hang out for a bit? Always good to hook up with other finatics to have on the local phone list.

Gratz on getting it started back up. The ticking noise is prob the dreaded lifter noise that some subes are plagued with. Usally a re-seal of the oil-pump and others help to shut it up. Do a search on lifter noise or ticking on the board, should come up with a ton of posts about it. Let me know if you ever need any help, I'm right over here in Lakewood and have owned and worked on so many subarus I can't even count them anymore. Oh and not a very good mechanic to tell you just to get a new car, I know an extremely good mechanic that won't try and jack you...my brother and his shop is right here in lakewood. With the bonus that he lived and worked in Bailey, CO forever which means he worked on mostly Subarus up there.

I tend to use the old jack it up and place a hand on the top of the tire and on the bottom and wiggle it. Should not click or have any movement, also spin the tire while jacked up and listen for grinding noises..not good. The wiggle is a good test of your ball joints too. Just went through the back bearings on my DL for the same reason.

I need better gearing for 82 Brat
DrKrazy replied to greggbrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Impressed... I lived in Bailey, CO for along time and Red Cone was right around the corner. Never got any of my subarus very far except for an 84' hatch that had no problem(never figured that one out). Always have to pull out my Chevy for Red Cone. Anyways always impressed to see other people attempt it in a faithful subaru. -
Almost Offical Plan for 88' DL
DrKrazy replied to DrKrazy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Didn't make myself quite clear after re-reading my post, I was thinking of completely taking the bumpers off and have my friend fill it in with pieces molded to the rest of the front and back body line. Oh and yes mine has the light weight black ones on it atm. -
Now that I have gotten my 88' DL mechanically sound the rest of the project is ready to happen in the next month or two. I want to lower the car a few inches(2wd why not?) and have alreay started to strip the clear coat and paint off for the body work. What I haven't decided is wether to shave the bumpers off or not and what color to paint it. I have a few friends who are genius metal workers so that wouldn't be a big deal. So has anyone tried that and has pictures? and green or dark blue? Gotta finish this before I can find my XT project.

pesky air noise from windows...
DrKrazy replied to ScoobieNoobie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Might sound strange but I had this same problem on my DL. Drove me NUTZ! Ok what I did to fix it was grab my wife's favorite tool-The almighty Glue Gun. Took off the rubber molding and quickly put a layer of hot glue down and put molding back in place. I then applied pressure from the inside for a min or two with the door closed. And Bam no noise what so ever, and should be fairly long term fix. Strange but easy fix for me. --------- Dr.Krazy 88' 2wd DL=Daily Driver 94' Legacy Wagon=Wife's Driver (few more projects not worth mentioning atm) -
New bumper & side lens is in the back of my truck already, brother in-law/body man fixing the fender for me. And yes it drives me nutz, even worse since I'm not the guy who smashed it. Will check into those parts on the tranny, but is there a 4 spd that will bolt up as a later thought?

First off want to say hello to everyone here, I have used this board extensively for a few years but never actually registered till now (I know, I know what took me so long). Anyways just happened by an 88' DL Sedan 2wd, auto from a guy who bought the car brand new. 4DR, A/C (still works!), Auto, blah blah...well it had a cooling problem and he just wanted it gone. Well I know subarus well and was scared (but this was is not a rubo) grabbed it anyways. Dusted it off, air'd it out, checked the fluids, and put a new battery in it. Started it up, drove it home (ran at 3/4 the entire way) put a new radiator in it and boom car was good shape. Spent a few days doing brakes, major tune up, fluid changes, etc. But getting to the point the transmission sucks, it may be going out as the shifts are hard and it takes a few before shifting to first after breaking. I've been considering doing the 5 spd conversion but would really prefer an automatic since this is my heavy traffic commute car now. So is there any 4spd auto conversions? or any suggestions?
