  1. I need to get the parts yet! Tomorrow I’ll be near the L, then I can go from there on the postage. Cheers Bennie
  2. Makes sense - I’d say more so for the time it takes to heat up the catalytic converter to allow the ecu to run with the O2 sensor in operation for emissions. Cheers Bennie
  3. Heat shields are good for collecting grass seeds and stems to create a fire. Not good if you’re relying on your vehicle to get you out of a remote place you’re visiting... Cheers Bennie
  4. The EA82 will only give you headaches finding parts unless you’re patient (and possibly lynhave deep pockets). As @wagons said, the EJ conversion can be done for about the same amount as a DIY engine rebuild, more if you pay someone to do the work for you. Pick a series of engine that you like and get a donor vehicle that has it fitted. The EJ22 is well tried and tested. I’ve had mine for ten years and counting. Done head gaskets once and cambelt twice (it’s due again now). I would like more from it but compared to the EA82 it’s night and day! Cheers Bennie
  5. Use a magnetic tool retriever that fits down the tube to lift the remains of the dipstick out. If it’s full length that’s broken off you shouldn’t have any issues. If it’s only a part of it, you’ll probably have trouble getting it out. If this is the case it could be worth draining the oil and trying to fish the broken off section out through the drain plug. Cheers Bennie
  6. Good luck finding a 3.9 ratio ring and pinion for this gearbox! The box is hard enough to find these days. Glad it was sorted in the end. Hopefully Shawn can take on your feedback about more communication. Cheers Bennie
  7. If the engine moved rearward there maybe internal damage to the rear output shaft in the gearbox/transmission. This will be hard to work out without either driving it (and finding a problem) or removing the tailshaft and physically inspecting the outputshaft for any significant play. Bummer about all that work and then the prang. I too like Imdew’s suggestion of finding another vehicle that needs an engine, then make one good one from the two. Cheers Bennie
  8. @FerGloyale - are you saying the US delivered Brats have a check engine light AND a reed switching speed sensor built into the instrument cluster?? If true, you guys are lucky! We didn’t get any of those! Cheers Bennie
  9. You’ve listened to the wrong ppl. My AC works when it has gas in it. I needed to make some custom AC pipes to fit the EJ compressor to the EA AC system; and I needed to reference the compressor clutch wire (from memory) to the EJ ECU wire that is used to idle up when the AC is in operation. It wouldn’t be much different to the Link system too I reckon. Cheers Bennie
  10. Welcome NW, My question is what are you wanting from your mild off-roader? - carry gear, sleep in it etc. The outback will have more room than the Impreza. Since a dual range is hard to find state side, an auto will have the advantage over the manual when off-road. Cheers Bennie
  11. Not on an ‘83. They’re replaceable. At least they are in Oz right up to the last brumby run in ‘91. L series, totally staked. Machining required to convert to replaceable uni joint yokes. Cheers Bennie
  12. 4wd will probably be a hand brake kind of effect if the diffs aren’t matched. I believe series 1 4wd touring wagons got the 3.9 diff and the DL 3.7 (could be wrong, they could all be 3.9 in the series 1). Series 2 I’ve only ever seen 3.7s across the board for the 4wd models. Cheers Bennie
  13. Rogie. I’ll get them organised and check postage as that could be the killer Cheers Bennie
  14. How do you determine the ratio by just looking at a box @FerGloyale? Quite a skill! In all seriousness, “easiest” way to work it out is to engage 4wd, mark the rear output shaft, rotate the diff once, counting how many times the rear output shaft rotates. You may have to work out what .7 of a rotation looks like to decipher between 3.7 and 3.9 (which will be closest to 4 rotations). Cheers Bennie
  15. Welcome back! That wouldn’t happened to be the Wonder Brumby II that your old username refers to would it? From Tassie? Cheers Bennie
  16. The only difference I know in the door between the sedan and wagon is the glass. Everything else is interchangable. Cheers Bennie
  17. It’s been done many times here in Australia with the Brumby (Brat). The best person I know that could answer this is @Steptoe Cheers Bennie
  18. Yeah I see what you’re talking about with the triangle trim piece. And I’ve never seen side mirrors like that. I’m sure our ‘84 side mirrors are different - alabit trashed since the car was stolen and driven through a cyclone fence (years ago now!) nope, they’re the same style. LHS mirror is gone. Cheers Bennie
  19. This has caught out several new members too. Don’t go asking about your 1992 loyale in that forum, they’re EJ series and beyond. As GD mentioned, read the forum description - or the fine print of you like... Cheers Bennie
  20. The parts car that has the piece on it is an hour’s drive away at my parent’s farm. Earliest at this stage would be next weekend. If your mum gets suss - use some BS magic that a forum member is curious about the 85 model door setup with the mirror. Be sure to then take some exterior pics too Cheers Bennie
  21. I’m not following what the difference is. The ‘84 had the window mounted on the door panel too. And my ‘88 that I daily doesn’t have any cut out in the upper arm rest for the triangle piece that covers the mirror mount above the door line. You have caught my curiosity on this one. Cheers Bennie
  22. Checkerboard comment is talking about the top piece with he door lock and release handle in it. I too have front and rears from an ‘84 L series sedan. But I’m in Oz and postage can be a killer when leaving our country... if you need/want them though I can check out postage options. Regards Bennie
  23. Very unusual for the belt and crank pulley to align like that for a cam belt change! You should go buy a lotto ticket And I’ve done the drink bottle cut down burping method many times! Cheers Bennie
  24. Well on the SG it’s how you said - accessible from the rear/through the starter motor hole. I’ve probably got my wires crossed from an old Holden setup and what I remember seeing on a Gen1 I pulled apart once. Cheers Bennie
