I don't know about them, was there a dual range EJ transmission available? never in a U.S. production vehicle right?
-
I'm just converting my '83 Brat to 5-speed dual range transmission, the bed is already restored and I'll just be finishing up exterior paint job. After all finished, I expect to list for sale at around $4,500 most likely, FYI
-
Yeah I checked one that came in to Autozone today, and it was stamped steel too thin to grind anywhere, and also the ring diameter was too large, it would have contacted the ea81 pp teeth too far out and clutch would have been super stiff if working at all. Still not sure where I'll find a TOB or what will happen next..
-
using the correct 5spd DR TOB and then altering contact points (the 2 spots the clutch fork touches the TOB)... seems like it would be pretty easy to grind off 2.6-4mm, then it seems everything would be back to stock measurements for the clutch fork/clutch cable?
-
This IS great info for sure. I'm believing that more things are possible even if some things aren't perfectly ideal. Even talking with clutch experts at exchange parts clutch shop, "2.6mm in that spot where the TOB moves isn't much" Cable clutch system, leverage/adjustment points CAN be altered if need be. I ordered a new ea82 TOB from autozone. I'm going to see how it seems to line up with teeth of ea81 pressure plate, and most likely give it a shot with my ea81 flywheel/pressure plate from '84 4-speed Brat being used. .. and that will mean spacing starter out with washers to gain correct alignment. I will report back what happens. Obtaining even an ea82 pressure plate, would require me to either pay $180 or the labor to drop ANOTHER '87 car's transmission out in the freezing cold and snow at self-pull junk yard, plus probably $25. No thanks.

If you shave an ea81 flywheel down .1" or so, that's around 2.6mm... which is close and could account for the 4mm spacer for starter motor mentioned in that article. Makes sense to me, only thing needed is actually a correct TOB to work for this combo?

I'm having difficulty, thinking I'm understanding you now.. I was told what I'm doing will work, and all the parts I have are: -ea81 large flywheel/matching ea81 pressure plate -ea82 clutch disc with the proper center hub that DOES fit inside the ea81 pressure plate --so you're saying the ea82 TOB isn't the correct diameter where it would contact the ea81 pp teeth, and the ea81 TOB probably doesn't slide on the shaft inside the 5-speed trans correctly?--is there no TOB solution that can be found to work?? I don't have an ea82 flywheel OR pressure plate, both would cost more money to source than a strange TOB it would seem. Jerry in WA was so detailed about the correct clutch disc I needed to get that would fit inside the ea81 flywheel/pp (small enough center hub w/ 6 springs) while having the larger diameter correct splines for the 5-speed DR trans. Local clutch shop finally made me the semi-custom disc solution that would work. PLZ god help me complete this swap without hundreds more in needed parts

just sayin, my 15" set of newer style pugs are almost as good as new, and I only need $200 for the set of 4..... not $160 each but very good to know that resource

I've been amassing everything I need. My '83 Brat used to be an automatic trans car, now its currently a 4-speed single-range manual out of an '81 Wagon using the small clutch. My 5-speed dual range is out of an '87 GL. I have the Brat '84 large flywheel and pressure plate, with correct clutch disc for the 5-speed input splines. (I don't have a proper alignment tool, but I was going to wrap a 4-speed alignment tool in electrical tape.. and try to guess as close as possible) I have all parts modified by Jerry in WA for trans mounts and shifter/linkage conversion. I have new axles, I have a newly rebuilt 1-piece driveshaft that was lengthened with 51" of new tubing (10.5" longer than stock I believe). I had just stumbled upon this page: http://offroadingsubarus.com/83sedan_4wd.html I know that Leone started out a different 2WD sedan, but it was still an '83 ea81 car.. so, I guess I space out the starter motor 4mm to work?: then there was this: "started on the clutch cable. This needed swapping because the EA82 gearbox has its clutch lever on the left side of the gearbox, not the right like the EA81's have it." "Comparison of the EA81 (below) clutch to the EA82 (on top) clutch. And what the EA82 clutch looks like on the EA81 pedal box." "The pedal box chopped and drilled. Then the clutch cable bolted on, with a new set of holes this time in the right place. With the pedal box bolted back into the car and cable connected to the gearbox the pedal sits level with the brake." Is all of this required? I was not aware of any conversion differences between the 4-speed and 5-speed clutch pedal/cable. Should I expect any clearance issues with trans tunnel on my '83 car and the 5spd DR, or does it maybe have the biggest tunnel possible with the '83 being an auto car originally? I daily drive my car, i didn't want to push it and start a swap today with my buddy, in the cold, just to run into a hang-up and have no car to drive.

Yep trans is 23-spline '87 5-speed dual range (part time) so stock axles are what I need however, CV axle rebuild shop in Salt Lake City wants $50/axle to rebuild 2 boots with parts/labor. I ordered new axles at Autozone through commercial account and got them for $45 each instead. One of my current axles is already cut-off short through where the cotter pin usually goes after the castle nut.. That was the right side I already replaced 10K ago on an automatic car, lol I'm better off trying the new set of matching 'duralast' axles.

My buddy and I owned a beat old one a few months ago that was the Mazda diesel 2.2, and somebody in the past had converted the front headlights to the ford courier round style Cool old trucks, I'd love a nice one of the old diesel 2.2's We also owned a Datsun 720 diesel pickup after that which had a 2.2 also they were nice in different ways had their better points but I liked the isuzu pup turbo diesel 4X4 the best!

great thanks for the info my 5-speed trans was out of an '87 or '88, most likely a MPFI car. I'll count splines and figure out what I have and what fits now, before I go to try and complete the swap..
-
I'm ready to put my 5-speed swap in my '83 Brat, I have everything I need for that and also lots of other new parts.. will get new axles now, because my boots are torn even though no clicking yet.. I'd never seen anyone mention parts needed axle-wise, so the old '83 Brat axles are the correct spline count and length for the 5-speed trans? Autozone's computer says the '87 GL 4WD 5-speed car has axles that are a couple inches longer than the Brat. Does the GL just have a wider wheelbase or something? I will order axles tomorrow, once I'm sure on the correct ones.

I went with the 185/60R15 tires on the Peugeot rims, and they are real nice, don't seem to rub anywhere even if close on front fender lips (could be tucked) HOLY $HIT MY CAR IS SMOOTH NOW FINALLY! to 92mph GPS verified on '81 4-speed trans gearing, aww yeah perfect size without gearing becoming noticeably taller
-
turns out my Peugeot rims are 15's not 14's! I'm trying to re-figure tire calculations now 185/60R15 is 1" bigger tire than stock and you are going 4.7% faster than speedo says, seems reasonable
-
my size calculations were off I have 15" Peugeot rims to use now..
-
I just obtained 3 sets of Peugeot 14" rims From what I can gather, the best choice in tire to work on my Brat will probably be Simex 195/60R14 tires. What is the widest tire you can use with these rims that will not hit (stock-height) fenders or rub on struts/springs?

SWEET I'd been wanting to see inside my loved ea81 engine. I've got one engine out of my blue Brat, here in my shed now. Ready to research engine building from the airplane guys, and tear into mine see what I can do. I know with some porting and oversize valves, the airflow gain through the engine should be huge. I want to know what aftermarket pistons and camshaft are available, wondering if anything besides the simplest 100% flat-top piston like in your pics above could be better for HP? ..and also HP for boost, because I think 9:1 is the perfect compression ratio for a 200HP turbo ea81 motor. WRX 13T turbo probably just the correct size. Yeah, my engine here is an awesome later-project of mine, I've got a handful of projects ahead of it I need to finish..

oh snap! we'll be in touch for some parts probably

never anything with this? damn, I want some new 14's -
My heater/vent fan on my black '83 car I drive works, but it makes noise when its on like something hits the fan blades. How long of a job is it to remove/re-install?

Well shoot, I did this yesterday. I swear I spent like 5 hours+ from start to when I was driving my car again. I swapped EVERYTHING from the 84 onto the 83, and converted things that were different. Kept all stock routing and emissions stuff, air injection system is only thing missing. I bet the 1 year difference and auto-manual difference made up the biggest differences.. Starts way quick every time now just like the blue car did. Feels like a completely different engine now. Smooth and more refined in some ways, but mostly I just think it sucks because the throttle response is dead now! I've experienced at least 3 different carbs and 3 different exhaust setups on Brats. I love the weber. I miss the instant-TQ streetfighter I've been driving sometimes. This engine still seems like a slight freak at high-RPM breathing though, better than other engines, probably cyl head casting differences. Loves to make HP and keep pulling more from 4,500 - 5,000 rpm like a little race motor. I swapped on the 84 carb, but it was more filthy, and I know exactly how it performs now. I think I'll swap the other carb I had back onto the 83, keeping all routing the same, see if any difference. That wasn't the original carb on it anyway, THAT was from a different 84... so i have (2) 84 Hitachi carbs
