  1. I have a 98 Outback wagon manual trans. that suddenly developed a noise when decelerating in gear (so there is a load on the drive train). Quiet accelerating or when coasting with the clutch pushed in. Does not change moving side to side. Sounds like it is coming from the rear. Kind of a deep whine or howling sound. This was not gradual, just started all of a sudden. I'd relate its symptoms to an older rear wheel drive car with pinion gear/bearing problems. This is a higher mileage,(122,000) maintained vehicle. I haven't had a chance to get under it yet to start troubleshooting it, but any thoughts would be appreciated. Also wanted to add that there is no noticable vibration with this yet, and nothing related to the brakes either. Thanks
  2. My 98 Outback w/ MT gets around 25-27 mixed city and highway, and there are a lot of hills and mountains where I am.
  3. Thanks for the info and the link. Awesome write up on the procedure! Thanks again!!
  4. Sorry to post what is probably another redundant head gasket question, but here goes; I just purchased a 98 Legacy Outback Wagon with 116k on it. It is in very clean condition, has had the timing belt replaced recently, has a new clutch, and CarFax says there are no open recalls. I bought this from a used car dealer that specializes in pre owned subaru. (He has a good reputation) He said at this point there are no signs of head gasket problems, but based on all the posts, I'm sure that someday it will be needed. I'm a former auto technician (Master certified ASE, Chevrolet, & VW). Has anyone attempted to replace their own head gaskets, as opposed to taking it to a dealer? If so, what kind of job is it? Thanks....
