84 GL wagon 273000, original clutch I believe.

84 GL wagon 1.8 non-turbo 4x4. The past few days when I start the motor, it sounds like the starter motor gears aren't fully engaging, kinda goes in and out and I hear the sound of metal teeth grinding. So far, it seems to be worse when the car is cold. I have been parking on hills just in case, but it has started the last 10-15 times, sometimes with noise, and sometimes with none. The starter is hardwired to a push button toggle on the dash as the ignition switch went out 10 years ago. Do I need a shim job, or a complete overhaul. Could it be an electric problem? More importantly, is this something that needs immediate attention? - Will I do unrepairable damage if I let it go too long? I have a hunch, but would like to hear the voice of experience.

Update: it was the CV Joint. General Disorder replaced the axle in about 15 minutes. no more pulling.
-
update. the passenger side wheel has a little play side to side, but not from top to bottom. it has play when my hands are at 3-9 o'clock. I looked at everything under there, and the only thing that seems to be absorbing this movement is the axle. so...my best uneducated guess is that the cv joint is toast, and I am getting the pull to the left from one wheel drive, and the bad axle operates smooth at higher speeds because...??? its bound up at lower sppeds and starts working again at higher ones? any speculation is welcome here. thanks

Thanks Joe. I will jack it up and give a shake.

I searched, and didn't find the answer. I know the CV is going, passenger side front boot cracked about 5000miles ago and is clicking, but just sometimes. All of a sudden, last night after getting off the highway, the car started pulling really hard to the left and it felt like there was wobble or play in one of the front tires, it felt like one wheel was just drifting around. But ONLY at low speeds, and disappearing with acceleration. above 40 it's fine. I was a little scared to drive fast fearing a wheel falling off or something and limped home. Today, I looked under the car, wheel weights are on, and no visible issues with steering components tie rods or axles. What can cause this? Is it safe to drive to the parts store, or am I pushing it? thanks USMB

Bump. this exact thing just happened to me. Wondering what you ended up doing and how it worked. Thanks to all the posters for the part numbers!

questions: is this what I think it is, and how important is it? thanks to all who helped me with the last issues, now I found the real culprit as to where coolant was leaking. apparently the little plastic piece is called a Termocontrol valve assembly (described it to a shop and that's the answer I got). it is a little plastic elbow with some kind of valve in it, has ~13mm bolt on the end of it. not sure how one would turn the bolt, as the plastic it is threaded into is crap. it might be heat activated. the valve is connecting on both ends by 1/4"ID hose. location of this piece: from the water pump, there is a rubber elbow hose about 6" long that connects to a metal T under the air filter (not in it), and behind the alternator. the top of the T connects to heater hose that goes through the firewall. the stick part of the T has a 1"piece of what looks like 1/4"ID hose connecting to the plastic piece I described above. following that plastic elbow, the next piece of hose connects to the base of the hitachi carb. so, I am in there, now I don't exactly know where to go from here. my instinct tells me to skip it and just leave it out of the picture. my instinct also tells me I am an idiot and will probably screw something up and should as a professional. thanks again USMB

antifreeze leak from heater hose 84GL
ajp replied to ajp's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Update: it took me 2+ hours to get the 2 hoses off and replace them. what a nightmare. In the process, I needed to remove a plastic connecting hose from just above where the 2 heater hoses attach to the block. that connecting hose went from a suction fitting att he top of the case (between case and carb) to another splitter that connects to 1) valve cover, and 2) air filter (and some other little hose as well). this piece snapped in half. I think* what it connects to on the block is called a pcv valve. when I start the engine, their is suction on it. question is, what do I call that connecting hose part? if I drive to the junkyard (1 hour) with that hose missing, is it going to do damage, or just make it burn a little less clean? brittle, that old plastic. its an EA-81 -

antifreeze leak from heater hose 84GL

air makes sense. how much fluid does the system take? more than a gallon? -
found the leak, its dripping about a quart every couple hours. the leak is in the lower of the 2 heater hoses (that come off the block and go through the firewall). not the one with the screwcap in the middle. what I am wondering is: can I just replace the hose and try to catch the fluid as it drains from the block and heater core (guessing this will be a mess), or do I need to drain the whole system. I am not lazy, it is just really cold out, and I do not have a shop or garage so will be laying on a mat underneath the car, and am also concerned that if I flush it, I risk creating more problems - it is 30 years old. and this is my first time dealing with this part of the car - be nice if it didn't take all day. one other question: when I start the car, I can hear what sounds like ice cubes clicking around under the dash. I was thinking that I had ice moving around in there because my mix was off, but now am wondering if it is a pile of metal flakes. any help is greatly appreciated. thanks!

My gas mileage seems unrealistic....
ajp replied to Subaru_dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I average 28mpg city and from 30-35 on hwy in 84 E81 4x4 1.8L engine. the variance is from the gas. non-ethanol 92 octane gets me about 5 more miles to the gallon on hwy, and I get more power too. sure wish there was 95 on the west coast! -
84 D/R 1.8 non turbo wagon. A week ago, I noticed a feint whine while in 4th gear only. checked gear oil, there was a drop on the stick. I put in 1.5Q of valvoline 80-90. looks like it might be leaking from output seals. after 10 miles of light driving, gear oil is still full, but it is dark, not black, but not clean. I wanted to take this car on a road trip from CO to OR, but am afraid to without getting this problem fixed. I cannot find a transmission locally as yet (if you are in CO and have one, let me know). Car has a great engine and I am confident that it will go another 100k as I change oil every 2000, burn highest octane available, and cruise on hwy at 65, and around 2500-2800rpms. I do not want to scrap it. Questions: is it advisable to try the drain it and run automatic gear oil for a few days and then refill with manual? will this further any leaking seals? will this further erode a possible bearing failure, or make it go faster? I have heard of people driving these things with that noise for years. Not sure I want to tempt the gods on a road trip. If so, do I do the seals first, then try the automatic oil, or vise versa? If I hear the noise in 4th gear only, does that mean whatever is making it is a 4th gear part, and I can drive it in 3rd without doing more damage? If I find a tranny, and I know that other year models will fit, just not exactly sure which ones (83-88?) and which questions to ask to find out. Is there anyone between colorado springs and fort collins that can help me do it, or let me help/watch? thanks for your help again.
