  1. So for the compression test its put to top dead center #1 then the 1/4 turn to #3.... or is it possible to leave the belt off and turn the right cam till all valves close on that side??? Or just crank the engine with the gauge hooked up leaving plugs out??
  2. sounds like a plan, i guess we'll see what the compression test looks like, thanks for all the info..
  3. I have had my soob for about 1.5 yrs in non-running/stored, just started getting into the thing for about a week now and im hooked..my brother had it before me too!!
  4. It was the toothed idler by the WP, the car shut down right away, then it sat till i could get at it.. so more than likely the heads need to come off?? would it be a waste of time to put it all back together and try to start it??
  5. its a EJ251, #2 sprocket spun the bearing on timing, the car just died.. total shut down, everything..anyways got it towed and it sat for a while but now I have a little extra time under the hood, got new timing idlers, timing belt, and put on a new water pump, so I guess my next step is a compression test??
  6. I ended up putting some Dawn in it , yeah dont do that it work ok but I had to rinse it like 50 times...it doesnt have to be pretty though this thing hasnt ran in almost 3 yrs...hopefully in a few days:banana:
  7. Im worried about valve damage.. its been sitting for 2 yrs finally got time to mess with it, all new fluids gaskets and o-rings.. got it down to replacing the timing pulleys, then a compression test...
  8. It got changed before the trip from MN to TX where along the way the #2 timing idler sprocket failed and the thing shut down..
  9. It sure does, just started the timing belt on my newly acquired 2000 outback... I sure was't ready for that!
  10. Just got a soob fo $400 just quit on the highway, it was a idle sprocket #2 failer, so far thats what i see, want to get into the heads and seee what shape they're in!!! Cant wait!!
  11. Is the 2000 outback SOHC #6 VIN in the same non-interference category?? The #2 idle sprocket for timing failed on this motor, (the car began to overheat slightly, nothing crazy, then suddenly the car shut off!!) It sat forever till I could get at it.. Anyways tore into it a few days ago and got to the timing belt, noticed the timing marks were not lined up. The belt jumped around?? Can I hand turn the cams to the marks before installing new timing belt??
  12. :-\ sound like the heads didn't get re-torqued after initial install of head, and after getting up to operating temp
  13. Proud owner of the outback, in the process of my first rebuild
