Alternator Installation Recommendations
SubaSkeet replied to Turtle's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
couple friends and i rebuilt a trail 90 engine and started it up... it wouldnt cut out. Cal had to retrieve the spark plug to stop it, boy, was that a kodak moment. electricity is fun in small doses. -
hey, i can run 24's. thats still good, right? no? oh, maybe i could shed some weight in the engine department. no? oh, maybe i should get a new car. no? oh, maybe i should not race. yes. always wanted an xt.

not quite, just a kid with too much time.

heh, just found out that i have it. not like ill use it, i am e-brake happy on hills when i park. and quite frankly, i dont trust it at all while driving. might come in handy in san francisco, but not in valleyville here. flat as a week-old soda on the kitchen counter.
-
holy crap, youre really doing it up fast then, huh? rock on . i dont have that kinda cash, so i jerry rig everything till i get the money to do it nicer. welcome to the craziest bunch of people in the world. and i do mean crazy. nuts. psycho. freakin head-over-heels. and thats just me, heehee.

my loyal loyale loved the dirt so much, it found its way onto a more local ground. about 5 miles away as opposed to 25 miles away. and truly OFF ROAD instead of rallying. oh my, was it fun. sure, you cant powerslide around the corners, but rolling next to cliffs and on a 30 degree angle equals the tension in my nerves at the same time. i say i flexed out several times, and i LOVED IT. i swear on everything holy that i will never not have a vehicle w/ 4wd capabilities. life would be meaningless. it was sooo funny sitting on a cliff honking my horn and waving as cars 40 ft below pass on the pathetic little paved road below, while craning their necks to see what retard is off roading a car. whoo, what a blast. will have pics this time, i would be an idiot not to bring one this time. im gonna show you all what this desert can do to your car. be prepared for some awesome roads in the area i call, "Gutter Alley", since theres just as much trash as there is vegetation (sagebrush and weeds). completely awesome. heres a preview of what i did:

how oh how do i get this friggin muffler off? the welds are too strong to chip at them w/ a hammer and chisel, and i dont have enough room for a hacksaw, sawzall, etc. ideas?

Twas a beautiful summer day in the desert, and nature was in balance. That is, until Scott woke up. The devil creaked an eye and received an idea: a perfect day for....OFF ROADING FURY! Quickly he gathered his safety equipment for his weapon of destruction (the car) and headed for the domains of his two counterparts, Cal and Steve. After a short run to purchase necessary supplement (panda express and sodas) the trio took off towards the heart of their enemy mother nature - Corn Creek Reserve. On the way-that-is-free (freeway) however, their weapon decided to call a time out and heated above normal temperature levels. pulling over to the side, the trio waited for the beast to cool by making use of their extended hair and muscly necks to a noise so painful it can only be heard on occasion (headbanging to static-x). A few moments later it was time to continue their quest on destroying everything in their path. The turnoff was a few metres down the road from where they recharged previously, so they took the uncommissioned direction and merged onto the turnoff eventually. Suddenly, Scott's stomach created a deafening noise of emptiness. This could only be resolved by one action - eating the one thing they strived so hard to get (panda is 6 bucks now!). Nature was happy for the hiatus in their horrendous activities, and used it to deviate a plan. Thus, clouds began to form, the positive and negative ions bouncing off each other to create something so powerful, so unstoppable, it would halt the devilish three in their steps. Yes, they would have no chance to continue once the preparations were over! MWAHAHAHAHA! ...But alas, it was to no avail. The desert atmosphere destroyed the moisture as soon as it was created, and the three comrades continued on their path of rage. Nature cringed as the squirrel-like sound of the EA82 engine was brought to life. It knew it would fail to protect the place it held so dearly. The roads were open for attack, and attack they did. Accelerating faster than any normal vehicle could, nature could do nothing but marvel at Scott's ultimate driving capabilities, and extremely riskful choices. Forty, Fifty, Sixty, Sixty-Five, Seventy miles an hour, destruction was imminent for all regrowth in their way. even hills could not stop them - they sailed through the air several feet off the ground for long distances, and seemed to enjoy the stopping of their hearts and the flexing of the vehicle's suspension while continuing to listen to their noises of death. Nature just turned its head and weeped. Two hours later the destruction ended. The weapon, the beast, otherwise known as SUBARU-LOYALE, ended their quest and turned them towards their civilized hell they called home. Nature was free once again to live as it once had so long ago, yet knew it could never fully regain all the strength that destroyed so many of these little demon's hopes and dreams in the past. The battle was over, but the war against Scott, Steve, and Cal was just commencing. The End. *No animals or plantlife were actually hurt in the making of this story. Nature's just a big sissy sometimes. *All precautionary measures were calculated and added to the plan of attack. spare tires, extra parts, tools, water, and seatbelts were in full use. *70mph on the dirt is truth. so is jumping the hills at that speed and catching tons of air. *fun was had on this trip, and will be had again... when we return. muahahahahahahahaha...

Moosens' computer not do so ok
SubaSkeet replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ask him for the symptoms, between nerds like me on this board we can figure it out in no time. i think ive had every problem you can possibly have on a computer at one time or another, ive cycled thru every piece of hardware at least twice and had a problem with each. oy, still easier to fix than cars tho. -

heh, rattlesnakes are the LEAST of your troubles in the desert... (ahem) 1. Scorpions - yeah, the venomous kind. the big fat black ones, too. 2. Black Widows - of course, every place has these. although not as abundant. 3. Vinegaroons - everything you eat for the rest of your life tastes like vinegar after you get to meet one of these fine specimens of spiders. 4. Brown Recluse Spider - more painful bite than the black widow, and more venomous. leaves a mark about 3" dia. for 3 months that starts to smell and makes the skin peel several layers off. 5. Rapists/murderers - theyre everywhere. my mom has to carry a blade when she goes running. 6. cockroaches - not as bad as chicago or new york, but definitely en masse. 7. cacti - (cactus plural) just dont walk around at night in the desert, the needles dont come out easy. and dont eat them... CT is a common disease here (CT being 'cactus tongue'). 8. flash floods - too many cars get swept away in just MINUTES after a nice rain. 9. heat waves - in the desert the winds can get up to 135 degrees and can literally drain your energy where you stand. DRINK WATER!!! if you get stuck in the desert w/ a car, lay down underneath it and sleep. the more energy you burn the hotter it gets, and you, well, overheat. duh. all these are silent, too. rattlesnakes at least give you a warning. whoo, makes you wanna come right on down, dont it? -
Exhaust burble / popping EA82 Wagon??
SubaSkeet replied to 98067313's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have a similar chugging noise, except it happens all the time. nothing too serious, i recently chopped the exhaust pipe from the muffler back off since it was 'holy' but is it possible that its a timing problem? -
What color should I paint my 78?
SubaSkeet replied to Kostamojen's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
a flat black would be very interesting on that old of a car... dual white racing stripes on top of that would look nice, i think. theres a sparkly blue color that my friend has on his jeep that would make the car look real spiffy, but its probably pricy as well. if you wanna check it out, his site is http://jpfreak.com/pics.htm . email him and he can tell you what specific color it is. looks nice on his jeep, anyway. if cheap is the most common word in your vocabulary as it is mine, i recommend the black. i personally like the look of dirt on black. make it show that you actually use the car for more than driving on sissy paved roads. if you use spray paint and you get a ding in the paint, you just wash that area well, get the same kind of paint can, and apply it whenever you need it. voila, no more scratch. im spray painting the bottom half of my car black so it matches w/ the tires and the limo tint. -
That rear fold up seat is one of my fav. features on the wagons - the uses for that back area are innumerable. ive fit 2 full-size bikes (with tires on) inside it, a twin size mattress, campaign signs, and muchos cosas de varioso (i dont think that last one's a word) in it. Perfect for camping trips w/ 1 friend or a pet (dogs, not cats. they smell and piss all over the place. and they suck.)

Ill have to check that out closer next time... love that movie, and even if i didnt id rent it just to see the car.

alright, today was a cool 92 degrees! thats like ice compared to what it would normally be. my lucky day. fortunately it didnt get too much hotter as i was stuck on the strip today for about 1.5 hrs just trying to get back on the freeway. dang, freakin tourists cant drive without looking at EVERY Single casino! you wanna see it up close, go for a walk! dont park your car in the middle of the intersection to stare at the 1/3 size eiffel tower! ANYWAY...yeah, not the temperature for soobies. i reckon its the one thing they cant handle too well - heat, that is. which is why it is so hard to find anything good down here. The only ones are either '97 and up or in terrible condition. i cry every time i see a wagon that i could have treated like a queen all beat up and fried by the uv rays. Definitely not staying for UNLV, uh uh. -
unless you just watched that on tv, how the heck did you remember seeing something like that? i cant even recognize what my own wheels look like, except the fact that the tires are bald and the hub caps are spray painted black. thats one good memory you got there, man.

Just looking thru the member names i realize that there is no one down in my area, and therefore i am lacking the subaru experience i would be having should i have been located in the northwest where i used to live. anyone wanna move? no rust here, no bugs, no pine needles, and..um...no rain? dunno if that last one's a real plus, since 4wd takes care of any worries about that. but when it does rain we get floods all over the streets, and a lot of you all like to use your subarus as boats, so come on down! alright, fine, stay up there. deserts are fun to off-road in, just in case someone wants to visit. next year a road trip to N.W.C. for me is in order, so ill make sure to find a time that a meet is going on. this post was actually quite pointless, but reply just to say im stupid anyways for kicks.

silly honda with a bottle

at a stoplight a red lowered pimped out mustang cobra 95' (or so) rolled up in the lane next to mine. I was just trying to keep my car from dying so i revved my engine and he took it as a challenge. He pounced on the gas pedal and let it roar. unfortunately for him, the roaring consisted of a sound like this... Vroooom, VROOOOOM, COUGH COUGH, VROOOM, POP! Vroom vrooom? his oh-so-special mustang backfired badly. I turned my head to look at him and he was busy yelling at his girlfriend (prolly a hooker, common in sin city) to calm down and it was just a little race. nonetheless he continued to "belch" at me, thinking i was about to return the sound. well, i didnt, and even if i would have i couldnt make any sound louder than a squirrel's sneeze with stock everything. to make a story short, the light went green, he gunned his car backfiring the whole way, and i just moseyed on up to him. the funny thing is, if he was trying to impress me (or his hooker friend) it didnt work. she was mad at him, and i was just laughing my head off at his crappy firecracker-on-wheels. gotta love idiots. or poking fun at them, anyway. of course, i'm the idiot in most cases. -

sun roof installation/loyale
SubaSkeet replied to the goat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i almost bought an 87xt with a "true" sunroof... the ones that dont have a window, just a hole and a cover... and the locks to keep the lid down had previously snapped off. hmm, wonder if that would have the same effect at 85 mph as an unlatched hood... except instead of blocking your view ahead as an open hood would do the flailing top flies off and smashes into the car behind you. at least the turbo will help you get out of there before he sees your license plate number. -
sun roof installation/loyale
SubaSkeet replied to the goat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
almost tried this recently. i got a friend that works on sunroofs for dealerships (although he is contracted - got his own business) and he hates it every time he has to do one. here's what he said about it when i inquired: 1. leaks, no matter how much you think you sealed it 2. leaks, no matter how much you think you sealed it 3. see either one or two 4. unless tinted or covered gets car very hot from sun...hence, sunroof to me as well it seems like it would be easy enough to install myself... you know, cut a big gaping hole in the top, trim it off with weather stripping and duct tape, buy a plexiglass window, and secure it down. but if a professional (as well as a good friend) tells me its not worth it, im gonna probably take his word. -
there's gotta be some way to rig up a kill switch.. you know, whenever i plug a green wire into another green wire under the hood in the top right corner(diagnostic wires, i think) my car doesnt turn over. all the lights work and stuff until you try to turn it. i hope it isnt damaging, as it doesnt seem to be. you could put a switch under the dash hooked up to those, if its not just my car thats wacked. any other ways you could make a kill switch, somehow kill the battery power w/o physically taking the batt. connection off?

whoa, sell it back. sounds like an ex-circus mobile with that blue smoke thing.

one word: YES. carbs are a little easier to tweak than f.i. if something goes awry.
