  1. Thats what my situation was. Recent tear in the boot so I figured I could spend $10 on a boot rather than replace the whole axle. I got it all in there and put the clips they included on. Sort of. Tight as I could get them without some special tool or whatever I need to get them on there super tight. I am gonna try the zip tie method now. Thanks everybody for the suggestions and assistance!
  2. OK, so I took the t-stat out and have been doing my best the last couple of days to try to get the engine to go hot. TOday I really worked it. I went over the pass and drove the freeway in 4th gear at 60+ mph for a while. I could't get it past the middle of the gauge and that was only for a little bit. So if I am understanding what was said earlier, my radiator is good and the t-stat I pulled is bad?
  3. RV, that's what I was doing this morning with no success. It moved a little and I mean A LITTLE. Millimeters. Couldn't find a way to get any leverage so I was just banging on it with a mallet. I'll give it some more tomorrow. Desert, I'll try that. The axel can almost come out all the way from the transmission and I was trying to arrange the pieces to be able to get that last little bit. I'll try your method and see how it goes. Thanks to you both!
  4. Lets see of this works. http://www.flickr.com/photos/65117564@N05/5932561476/ I should also mention that I think I've started to understand my next step. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think I need to slide the knuckle off the shock tube. Problem is, its not budging. Suggestions? Corrections? Thanks.
  5. Ugh. I can't get the picture to work. But if you right click it and say Open in New Tab you can see it.
  6. Thanks for the info. That will be helpful after I am able to get the axel out. I am just trying to remove the steering knuckle. Does it just slide off the shock? (Let me see if I can post this picture) Thats what I'm looking at. Where to go from here? Thanks.
  7. ha! don't I feel like an idiot. Its a 91 Loyale. Thanks for the reply.
  8. Ok, new guy needs some help. So here I was, just trying to toubleshoot a cooling problem I've been having and I noticed that on of my CV boots was torn and grease was everywhere. I decided I should probably fix that. I followed my Haynes manual until I got stuck at removing the steering knuckle. I read a few threads on here about it including ed rach's tech manual. There was a lot of info there and I followed most of it but I'm relatively inexperienced and felt some photos would have been nice in order to follow the procedures. Here is a picture of where I'm at: So what do I need to do to get the axel off from here? Thanks!
  9. Thanks steve. Its true, I am in Santa Cruz! Glad to hear you make it to our little town every year. I'll try taking the t-stat out tomorrow. So the temp will spike more easily with the t-stat out? Thanks for the heads up on the upull in moss landing. I won't get the radiator from there but its good to know that it exists. -Nathan
  10. Thanks for the replies. A new radiator was the solution on another thread I read about a similar issue. I may try the easier (cheaper) suggestions before I do the radiator but it sounds like that may be the issue. I don't think I am clear on what the thermostat actually does. Can someone enlighten me?
  11. Thanks for the speedy reply! The hill I climbed was about 2300 as well but the Loyale didn't like it too much. I had a small leak at the hose i replaced but if fixed that. Since then the fluid has stayed at the same level. Doesn't seem to be any other leaks. I'll try burping it. I've been wondering about the thermostat though. Thanks again.
  12. Hello. I am new to USMB and new to Subarus. I just bought a 91 Loyale in Oregon and on the way back to CA one of the radiator hoses exploded. Got that fixed but since then I've been having some cooling issues. Under normal conditions the temp will rise a little above halfway and then drop back down. One day when I was going up a long hill on the highway and the car was trying desperately to overheat. I did everything I could and kept it from overheating. It seems to me that I have a cooling problem. So my questions are: How should I troubleshoot this? Do I even have a problem or is my car just old? Thanks. -Nathan
