  1. Just saw this pop up after posting on your other thread. Congrats! And welcome to the board. The members rides is great to showcase your car. Especially if you are doing any work/modification to it. Or (As I more often do.) chronicling some of the adventures it transports you on. Great looking car. Is that an aftermarket roof rack? What sort of plans do you have for the new machine?
  2. Yeah, unless you see signs that the car was neglected,I wouldn't be worried. The 07s were a good year. These were still somewhat prone to head gasket failure. If the car seems solid and the price is right, there's nothing wrong with a 2 owner 07. They're sharp looking cars with fantastic versatility and great reliability. Should you purchase the car, refer back to this site. There's no better group out there to give help, resources and advice on any modification, maintenance or repair to your Subaru. They are such fun cars to own and drive. Plus you can see by the odometers represented by the members here that they are among the most dependably machines ever built. My wife's 2000 outback sits at 332,000 miles, my Impreza at 275,000
  3. searching for exhaust for it now, both in California/Wisconsin and beyond. Have a wanted ad in the marketplace if anyone has stuff for it.
  4. Start with fresh plugs and wires. This is super cheap and super easy. What you described sounds like faulty plug wires. if that doesn't fix it, look to your fuel filters and possibly the pump. Could be something else, but I wouldn't look there until you've checked these things first. My experience says that carb issues will usually be more problematic at idle than 3000RPM+ Is this car new to you? Or was this something that developed recently?
  5. Awesome! It's probably the simpler/better way to go all told. The EA81 stuff has it's advantages, but it's a lot more work than a simple engine swap.
  6. I drove 8 hours for a trans once. Small price to pay to get a car back.
  7. That EA81 engine is probably your best bet. There's generally not a high demand for them in the midwest since so few of them still exist in the area. That "or best offer" says to me that you could get that engine for significantly less than the asking price. They can be swapped into your car with light modification. I think there are a few write ups around here. Sounds like mechanicalmisfit can help with the swap. With this board as a resource, you could have it running in a day.
  8. You can bypass it. I rigged one to a couple interior light switches once. (heavier duty and way cheaper than automotive ones.) Just be sure your foot is on the clutch when you start it and you switch it off again as soon as the car starts.
  9. We are settled into California and the Ski Team wagon is being driven by a friend as a commuter. Reportedly it's running fine. The new speedo cable is in and I am hunting for a rust free California exhaust to ship back. The $65. trans shifts and drives fine. 4th gear though is very loud. 1,2 and 3 are normal. 4th sounds very loud and growly but feels fine. Any insight on what that might be? It will likely be joining us on the west coast after Christmas. I'm thinking my brother and I will do the 5 speed swap while I'm back in the area for Christmas and then road trip it back to the west coast.
  10. There's a writeup around here somewhere on how to do a free vehicle history search. It may give you the answers (If the car came from CA or maybe NY) I also will sometimes look up specific parts on RockAuto. It will specify whether it's CA specific or not. Usually CA and NY are the two that have stricter emissions requirements. The head gaskets on these motors were generally pretty weak, but it sounds like you've got that covered. As long as the car wasn't overheated when the heads blew and it was repaired correctly, it should last you a while. My wife has a 2000 Outback. Same motor as yours and she took it to work this morning with 331,000 on the clock. Sorry to hear that you're sorting out a pile of issues with this car, but if you treat it well, it will last and last. Also- welcome to the forum! There are answers to any subaru related question with the combined knowledge on here. Half the reason I drive subarus is because i know i can find out how to fix anything by coming here with my questions.

  12. Photo journey as the car traversed a 2500+ mile road trip. We shipped most of our belongings by way of a U-Haul U-box. Very economical but turned out to be a huge hassle. but that's another story. Here's the start of the trip. Left Wisconsin and took this at our first fill up in Illinois. The car was loaded. The boat was loaded. Always just a little bit of worry when you travel this far with a 16 year old car with over 200k. But that's part of why it's an adventure. Iowa and Nebraska only took half of eternity to drive through. Colorado started to bring more scenery and fun. Very different from Wisconsin. Denver traffic - not so fun. Finally getting to the mountains. Car started running hot going up into the mountains. Found a hairline crack in the radiator. Sanded it. JB Quick welded it. Waited 10 minutes and we were back on the road. Felt like a freight train going downhill. Fully loaded car. Fully loaded boat. Drum brakes in the rear. We descended carefully. I LOVE COLORADO. I would gladly call this place home someday. This pic was taken a little east of Vail. Saw many places that need to be explored in the future. Towing a boat allowed little in the way of off roading. Pup and I explored a small creek near a rest stop for a little bit of a break. Scooped up a little trout by hand. Native brookies are about the prettiest fish I've seen. Shortly after this, the dog found a pile of bear poop to roll in. I then had to give her a good dunking and a bath in that creek to be rid of the smell. Several thunderstorms came and went as we passed through the mountains. Noticed a rainbow behind us as we came down the western foothills that evening. Crossed this milestone as we entered the desert. Valley of Fire and the Mojave awaited to see how the car could hold up in 110 degrees+ Visited the St. George Dinosaur Discovery Site for a fun pit stop. When I was 12 I wanted to be a paleontologist. I still love dinosaurs. The adventure car doesn't have sissy luxuries like air conditioning. The girls were not pleased with the 110+ with only windows/breeze. We bought bags of ice and a spray bottle to help keep cool. Utah was pretty in it's own way. Rugged country out there. The adventure car on the face of the sun. (Almost) This was west of Las Vegas Nevada. Evening of day 3 had a brilliant sunset over the desert of eastern California. Finally made it to the coast on day 4. Pulled into our new little home in the redwoods tired and ready to stay out of the car. The car weathered the trip very well. I'll be replacing the radiator (probably with an all-aluminum one.) and am giving some consideration to swap disc brakes on the rear for those times that i'm towing. Both Subarus have made the drive out here quite reliably considering they are at 275k and 331k. We are now enjoying the consistent mild weather and having the redwood forests and the pacific ocean right in our neck of the woods.
  13. Glad to see another Impreza getting lifted. What's the motivation for putting a 2.5 in there? Generally speaking, the 2.5 is a much less reliable motor. There's a small HP gain, but they've had head gasket issues all the way through. I've seen some pretty nice frakenmotors put together between 2.2 and 2.5s that seems to gain the best of both worlds. The 2.2 has done well for me. Just turned 275k and most recently road tripped it out here to California from Wisconsin for our recent move. It made it all that distance lifted, loaded down and towing my 14 foot boat and it scaled the Rocky mountains and the Mojave desert in 110 degree heat without fail. Fun project! Have fun with it in whatever you decide. Just figured I'd chime in. Looks great so far!
  14. Looks like the one I almost bought from Miles Fox a year ago. EA82 is a great platform. I prefer the gen 2 as well, but any 80s 4x4 is a lot of fun. Nice find!
  15. My wife and I just moved to Scotts Valley (in the redwoods and mountains above Santa Cruz.) We're right on the other side of the "Cove' from you. The Subarus get plenty of exercise around here and so do we. We can also set you up with some of the fun adventure stuff around here if you ever get the urge.
  16. Part one of July in which the Adventure car traveled from Wisconsin to eastern Ontario, back again and then got loaded up for it's road trip to California and what is probably it's first time to the west coast. Loaded and on our way. The boat was Kira's birthday gift to me. Outfitted with a 10HP Johnson Sportwin and an upgraded trailer that has a custom horse trailer axle on 2WD Subaru Impreza rear hubs with Subaru rims and tires to match the car. Pulls smoothly and I always have 2 spares for whatever I may encounter along the road. Crossed the border from eastern Michigan into Canada around midnight. And after about 20 hours, arrived at the lake. Me, my brother and brother-in-law with our lake trout of the first morning. They seemed to be running small most of the week, but still tasted fantastic dipped in batter and fried! Deep water trolling. The "Silver Hornet" loaded to the gills. Ended up with some carb issues on the Evinrude so, we used my backup Sears 7.5hp for most of the week. My lake trout seemed to all be around this size. Kira on the other hand always seems to have better luck than I do. She went out for trout on the big water only once and landed this fish. (The largest trout we landed all week.) I got several decent bass through the week but no lunkers. On the second to last evening Kira landed this 18 inch bucket-mouth. Shoals around evening time fished very well. had to cut the trip a little short this year to be home in time for a friends wedding. Some of the best coffee ever. Tim Hortons ranks as high as Sheetz in my book. Great doughnuts too! A light "clank" sound between shifts got worse on the way home. Eventually becoming a shutter at low speeds. Pulled over and found this. The front joint of the driveshaft was about ready to tear apart. Did a roadside repair in the back of a Denny's parking lot in western Indiana. Kira went to get a a burger, fries and a milkshake to go while I did the fix. Fixed! (Sorta) two gallon ziploc bags, some duct tape over the top. Then wrapped the sides with electrical tape and tightened it all down with a couple big zip ties. After that we were on the road again but 1st and second gear were extremely slow to accelerate. Anyone have an explanation for how the gearing would work that way? By third gear it seemed a little more normal. Returned home with boat and all on front wheel drive like that. The local Pick N Pull luckily had a 98 Impreza Outback in it. I got the driveshaft for about $40. and things were back to normal. Great trip to Canada as always!
  17. We actually used the line about the state bird in some of the outdoor education classes I taught. It was a welcome rainy season after the crazy drought last year but the only downside has been record mosquito numbers. The corn seems happy though.
  18. The EA81 can do it. In my old 83 wagon it did just fine with 4 people and a bunch of gear in the car. Just really slow going up the hills. I'll be the first to ask why? The EJ18 or EJ22 that comes in the Impreza is just as reliable as the EA81. I drive a 97 Impreza Outback with the 2.2 It just recently turned 275,000 miles. It turned that 275 in the Mojave Desert about 3/4 of the way through a 2200 mile road trip out here to California. Not just that, but it did that with a lift, 215/75/15 tires while towing a 14 foot boat. (Both boat and car were pretty loaded down for the move.) and made it up and down the Rocky Mountains under such a load. it's a Subaru! I wouldn't be scared by the mileage and think because you have a running car with 200k+ that you need to put a lower miles motor in there. Just look the car over to be sure it's been maintained and is running as it should and drive it! My wife's outback was purchased a few years ago with well over 200k. It's now at 331,000 and going strong. Mileage is not generally something to be feared in Subaru's. If there are other reasons, disregard this, but from the OP it looked like mileage was the issue. Just find a good runner and keep it going! EA81 is a great engine, but that's a lot of work to go to a much weaker motor. Not to mention the little details of matching fuel pumps etc. to it.
  19. My best friend and I took a trip to the Upper Peninsula before my wife and I moved to California. We've been buddies since we were kids and she (Yeah she) was the "best man" in our wedding. She hadn't seen much of Wisconsin or the north woods before, so we made a few good touristy stops along the way. Pulled in to the Mars Cheese Castle in Kenosha, WI. SO MUCH CHEESE!!!! 7 hours later, we were in the north and dog tired. We put up the tent near a boat landing/state park to spend the night before finifhing the trek to our destination - The Porcupine Mountain Wilderness. (Known affectionately as the "Porkies") There is no place better than Paul Bunyans for breakfast. It's served "Logging camp style" - All you can eat. They bring it right to your table. Fresh donuts, dark coffee, eggs, hash browns, sausage, bacon, kielbasa, OJ and of course pancakes. Visited the Presque Isle when we arrived. Gorgeous waterfalls abound here. This is only one of many many waterfalls we visited. Backpacked into Lake in the Clouds. The mosquitos were horrible so we added an extra 5 miles to the day by going to Government Peak to camp. We hoped the higher elevation would have fewer bugs or at least enough breeze to keep them at bay. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were just as bad. To add to it, we had two HUGE thunderstorms come through during the night. The tent kept us dry until halfway through the second one, when things finally got wet inside the tent. We hiked back out on little sleep and soaked clothes and gear through flooded, mosquito filled trails. Trail conditions were pretty rough. Made it to Lake Superior, tired, damp, itchy and muddy. Took a swim in the cold waters and washed off the grime and dead mosquitos. Even caught a turtle. Packed up and headed for home. It was one of those camping trips that stretches you. Not as relaxing and easy as most, but challenging and rewarding with some good laughs and good memories. I counted over 100 mosquito bites on myself afterwards.

  21. If you're going to empty it, I'd put a garden hose to the radiator and be sure it's not blocked. If nothing else, you can often blow some gunk out ot there. But yeah, keep adding coolant. Sometimes takes a while to properly burp the system.

  23. No. It's off center for sure. I used 3/8 HDPE spacers so it wasn't an issue. Barely squeezes in there, but it works. Been over 30,000 miles since the lift with no problems. If you don't use the spacers, it won't work and you'd be better off swapping tophats.
  24. x2 on terminals If you have a good battery that you can borrow from another car try swapping that in to see if it's the battery. Done that a few times. Answers the question without having to shell out the $$$ for a new battery.
  25. Angle grinder and some Rustoleum white paint have it looking a little less rotted. Should keep just fine until I have a little more time to devote to it.
