1600cc might race a go kart? if you're serious about making the car fast, you're looking at swapping in new drivetrain, engine, suspension and beefing up the body to handle such things. A 76 Subaru is a rare car. Why not restore it? Got any pics?

Used is the way to go. $150. for a set of alloys isn't terrible, but you can probably get a set of steels for around $50. off craigslist or a junkyard. 5x100 bolt pattern isn't that rare. Shared on Chryslers (Cirrus, sebring,Neon etc.) and cavaliers and such. You can usually find a matched set in a junkyard on the cheap. Tires - used can be the way to go. You can buy new for around $100-$150 per tire or if you shop around on craigslist and such you can generally find almost new for $100-$300 for a whole set. For light off roading, just know your clearances and don't do anything silly. A lift is often a good idea for any real off roading, but a stock Impreza will do fine of dirt roads and such.

136K 1980 GL 1600 first car!

EBAY! Welcome to the board! -
Not as familiar with Tribeca, but the AWD is the same animal as the legacy/outback/Impreza platforms. Were there different size tires on the vehicle? If there were, or had been in the past it can cause tremendous wear to the drivetrain parts. All wheel drive requires all 4 wheels to be the same diameter. if not then yes, they would kill your transmission, rear differential or both. There will probably be much more insight from the board here, but I would also call the dealership that did the work to your car, speak to the mechanic that did the diagnosis and ask these same questions. IF he's a knowledgeable guy, he should be able to explain whether this was likely poor maintenance, a freak occurrence or some defect in part of the Tribeca driveline. But for the record, you heard right on the reliability. I drive an Impreza with 267,000 miles. My wife's 2000 outback just turned 320,000 and she's been looking at getting a Tribeca sometime in the future. Either way, it if was replaced properly, you're driving a car with 0 miles on the transmission. So even if the driveline was abused, you have a new one. Your car should be better now than the day you bought it and ready to go another 200,000 miles easy. Just be sure to keep tires that are exactly the same diameter on there and you should have little problems.

SWEET! Yeah, my schedule got bumped back by about 15 minutes so I'm expecting to be home by 5:45 now. Drive is a little icy at the top and bottom so be careful coming up. I'll keep my phone on, but may not be able to respond until 4:45. (Safety first!) Looking forward to it!

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=47792&highlight=legacy+seats+swap I was curious so I saw that much at least. Looks like you swap the pads but not the frame. WRX seats should be the same as any other Legacy or Impreza so what works for one should work for the others.

Yup. White Outback. 5 speed. gray cloth interior. Wheels and a couple switches were gone. Otherwise complete. Pretty nice looking car. Dibs on the rear struts, turn signal switch and fog lights.

Yeah. Unless you are a BEAST, don't try moving it on your own unless it's on wheels. I put one in the back of my Impreza with no trouble. 236 lbs sounds about right. But it's big and awkward. I moved the TH400 trans from my suburban easier than a 4EAT. Two people on it should work fine. And yeah. Tarps and cardboard are a must. it will leak. I put a ziploc bag and a rubber band around the tail of it to minimize this.

83 GL Clutch Replacement
AdventureSubaru replied to texasjack's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No such luck. Gotta drop the trans or pull the engine. I think SAAB is the one that you can swap clutches without pulling either. -

Read up on these and it will probably answer a lot of questions as you progress. Pedal assemblies can be tight, but should be pretty straightforward. Helps to remove the seat so you can lay on the floor to access bolts under the dash.

Fox - Got your wheel today. There are for sure 3 more 14 inch steels there. if I hunt around I can probably dig up a 4th one. Not sure if you were wanting a set of 4 or 5 total. I'll be picking up the trans on Monday I think. Should be available sometime later next week if you want to meet up. The wife and I might be back at the yard Sunday afternoon. There was a nice 2000 Outback in there that we might get some parts off for her car.

It's been done. Not by me. I know Monstaru and a few others have done it. if you can't find it in a search, check with one of those guys.

Shopping for a clutch. I am needing the 4wd clutch that fits EA82. Am I right that this is the 24 spline? Also heard mention of using XT6 clutch stuff one this swap. Is there much advantage? And which parts would be needed?

Nice find! And you certainly found the right place for information on Brats. WRX stuff in a BRAT? Yep. That's been done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhbmfNTNyro -
Got it! Now I just need to go pick it up. 1987 Dual Range with 62k:banana::banana: I was thinking I'd have to get one shipped from the Northwest. Fox, you got a deal! The rest of the car that the trans came from has since been scrapped. I'll get that rim and tire this weekend. I can probably get my hands on a set of 14s if you want them for sure. Probably around $60. for a set of rims.

Looks like it will be a bit of a learning process. hoping to be able to get the extra EA82 stuff with the trans purchase. If not, Fox, I'll look you up for the extras. I'm sold on the dual range. Having that low gear makes all the difference sometimes and I like to take my cars in some strange places. The more I research between the 4 speed and 5 speed, the more it makes sense to do the swap. Seems like this is probably more than a linkage issue, so since I have to drop the trans anyway, I may as well spend a couple hundred and put in the 5 speed while I have the chance. Better reliability (especially if I get that one with 62k!) Better fuel economy. Better low range. Now just gotta get the parts in order. Oh yeah! And the car isn't even here yet! 2 more days!

You came to the right place. You'll learn everything you could need to know and plenty of extra here. Your parents made a wise choice. I applaud their sound judgement. An subaru like that is the PERFECT car to start with. Easy to work on. Easy to learn about. Super reliable. TONS of fun. They go anywhere. They can carry a lot. They don't burn up a lot of gas doing it. They aren't very expensive to repair if they do need it. Keep posting up any info as you get more accustomed to the car. If you need any help in maintaining/fixing/modifying, all the info and people are right here.

Got a lead on an 87 5 speed Dual range with only 62k. Did a bunch of reading and I have some good info and some a little confused. If I were to do this swap given what the car already has, I would need - EA82 drive shaft. Modify trans mount. EA82 flywheel or Machine the EA81? And is it EA82 clutch pressure plate and EA81 disc? EA81 or EA82 TOB? If I go for this, I'll probably try and get all the accompanying EA82 trans stuff so I can sort it all out. Looks like it's been done a number of ways.

It's not that hard. Wonder what happened to the OP. his car was coming along nicely.
