  1. I've sprung a light oil leak out the top of the head where the oil fill tube attaches to the engine. Stopped at autozone and they refined the search enough to know that there is a grommet in there that must have finally worn out after 266k but they do not carry the part. Been searching online for the part through Subaru but have come up dry. Anyone know the part number for it? Would think this would be for any EJ but mine is a 97 EJ22 single port. Slowly reducing oil consumption on this thing. One of the never ending battles of Subarus... that and RUST.
  2. Great looking car. Really clean cut. Very tasteful modification. If you didn't know it was modified, you'd think it came that way. Keep up the good work with that gem.
  3. http://jalopnik.com/subaru-legacy-wagon/ Very clean cut looking for a big lift like that. Any info out there on this car and it's build?
  4. Loud mufflers without welding = cordless drill. Just put a few holes in your stock one - or your pipes and you'll get plenty of noise. Nice looking car. How much lift did you get swapping in the struts?
  5. Impreza is due for a little rust work. Typical of this area, the rear wheel wells are rusting their way out. There's been at least one prior bondo fix, but it's failed and is coming through again. This followed us home from a trip to Madison. Dig & Save is just about the coolest thrift store out there. Most clothing and small items are purchased (get this) - By the pound! How cool is that? Anyway, this little welder was sitting there, needing a home and having no one to love it. And it being the Christmas season, my heart swelled with festive spirit as I read the price tag - $25. Obviously there was no testing it in the store, but I plugged it in and flipped the switch and it hummed and had a little green light that came on. Took that as a good sign. Got it home and hooked it up in the basement. Took some researching. Wasn't thrilled that it's Chicago electric, but was pretty happy that after finding a manual online and fiddling with the dials (A LOT) that it actually made a half decent weld. Probably only useful for light metal welding, but still, it can hopefully help with some sheet metal until I've saved up for the Millermatic 140 that I've been dying for since spring. So for $25. I'm pretty happy with it. If you're ever in Madison and searching for random tools, clothes whatever, look that place up.
  6. X2. Can't hurt. And it takes a lot of slop out of these trannies. My old 83 wouldn't even go into reverse anymore till I did that to it. Made a world of difference.
  7. If they are both phase II you should be okay with the exception of the diff. The outbacks and Foresters had a different ratio than the other Legacy models. Apart from the diff, I'd say you're good to go. Front diff is a little different but not a terrible swap if you already have the trans out. You can probably make a good chunk of your money back selling some of the extras/leftovers on ebay afterwards.
  8. x2 on Exedy. I've been very happy with them and they are usually on the lower priced side too.
  9. You came to the right place! Keep the thread updated, with pics in particular cause we all live through other peoples threads some days. Love the pics you've got already. I've often thought that a sube would be a great storm chaser. Has all weather/terrain capabilities but gets near 30mpg for all those miles you guys log. Keep it up and keep the stories coming. This board is monumentally helpful for help and learning as you go. And I thought I had an exciting job...
  10. The latest as autumn is winding down. Got a few Pennsylvania trips under my belt with great results! GOT MARRIED!!! Kira and I said our vows on an island in the middle of the river that flows by our cabin in the Pennsylvania Wilds. The weather broke just before the ceremony began and the sun came out for most of the afternoon. Clear starry night by evening. PA elk herd has been doing well. Back for deer season. We had to burn the wood that had been used as the walkway to get to island. Part of deer camp tradition is cutting firewood the sunday before the season opener. And what hauls firewood from an island back to your yard with ease? A lifted Subaru! Opening day I shot a 6 point buck around mid morning. Our freezer is now stocked with venison roasts, steaks and chops. Kira can make a mean venison stew too. This was an extra special hunt because I harvested this deer using a home custom built single shot Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30 shooting a 7.62x54R bullet. The gun was purchased for a whopping $100. That rifle stock was carved by me using a $6. poplar board from Home Depot. The Scope mount was something I welded up in the shop and I had to modify the bolt on the action to clear it. A lot of work went into that rifle. My brother and I sighted it in at about 120 yards. It will continue to be refined but this buck was some very real "fruit" of my labor as I have an effective hunting rifle built from a WW2 antique. Day 2: It snowed overnight. Which makes seeing deer easier and tacking more reliable should you pull the trigger. That afternoon, my little brother shot this nice 9 point on the same mountain. I hiked in and helped him drag it out. Officially one-upped by my bro and couldn't be happier! Another guy in our group found this pair of elk sheds while hunting some of the lowlands. My brother is 6 foot tall to give you some perspective. PA elk are huge! Heading home back to the flatlands. Snappy's Coffee to stay awake for the 12 hour trek. Second only to Sheetz!
  11. Any good way to test the booster? I'll look for any leakage above the tank and see if that's the issue.
  12. Haven't been driving this car as much lately so I pretty much forgot I posted here. Seems a bit worse and the brakes are weak unless you pump the pedal. Then they firm right up. Not losing fluid anywhere that i can tell. Reservoir is full. Do a brake bleed anyway? I worry about those bleeder screws in a rusty part of the country.
  13. Start with the basics. Are the terminals corroded? I'd take them off and clean them up just to be sure. Even if they look clean, they get goofy sometimes. Can it be roll started? Can you used the jumper cables to jump the starter driectly from the battery? (Make sure the trans is in neutral) usually crank issues turn out to be simple. but can be frustrating finding the cause. Keep eliminating possibilities till it cranks again.
  14. Fix it! It's rather unlikely that what you are describing is anything expensive or difficult to fix. If you have a basic set of tools, you can do a full tune up, swap sensors and probably even swap out those ball joints. If you're willing to get a little dirty, post up a thread in the "older generation" section and describe in detail what's been going wrong and ask for advice on how to proceed. These old subies are mini tanks. They will run forever with a little upkeep. And a rust free one is a rarity. Fix it if you can. I hate seeing them going to the crusher or beaten to death by those who don't appreciate them.
  15. For sure. Will do. This should be a great Christmas season if I'm combining a new welder and a new Subaru. Should work together nicely. Hopefully the wife falls in love with this car more than she did my toyota. (I get the stink eye when I mention that truck.):-p
  16. I'll send a pm. probably more reliable than g-mail.
  17. Took a ride in the trunk of the car. Sounds like a light rubbing on the driver side rear. Gets pretty loud around 50 mph and up. Doesn't sound like any bearing noise I've heard. Sticky caliper maybe?
  18. 97 Impreza Outback 2.2 with 5 speed. 264,000 miles Started small but is getting louder. When I first get going in the morning and go in reverse I usually get a pretty loud clunk from the rear. (You can feel it through the floor/seat) This doesn't happen as I shift the trans but as the car starts moving. doesn't matter when the car is given gas, or rolls back (I often park on a hill.) Also, there is a rubbing/grinding noise coming from the back. As per usual, the faster you go, the louder it gets. I assume they are related. I suspected possible diff issues, axle or caliper. I have an auto yard 5 miles away with a few imprezas in it and a day off. Any suggestions to diagnose it?
  19. The Adventure car and I have had several good forays so far. I just moved to the area about 2 years ago. Devils Lake Wisconsin and Starved Rock State Park Illinois are great for lighter day trips. Best adventures come from northern Wisconsin and the U.P. Porcupine Mountain Wilderness Area and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are breathtaking. I want to try badlands off road park sometime as well for a little more romping. Keep the updates coming!
  20. Don't know much about these but congrats on the find. I replaced a lot of rusted sheet metal on my buddy's Cherokee a few months ago. Easy job since everything is so angular on these cars. They suck on gas, but the 4.0 is a very bulletproof engine. (255k on my buddy's) Hope that 2.8 is similar.
  21. Much more coming on this car. After the wedding this will be getting much more attention. The shredded rubber is long gone.
  22. share some pics of the new addition! Welcome to the board. There is NO better place to find information on subarus. Older ones in particular.
  23. x2. I'm dipping into the archives of my brain but I believe the 5 speed is longer than the 4. So it bolts to the trans fine, but wont line up one the bod correctly when it's all bolted together.
  24. Gonna have to get under there and find exactly where that leak is. My gut reaction is a rotted fuel line or a poor seal on one near the fuel filter. Whats the rust/rot situation on the car? We deal with it all over the place out here. Just got done replacing a rotted brake line on the adventure car. 3rd one in the last year.
  25. Nice find. Good to see more old subies in the midwest. I miss working with the EA engines. Once I'm caught up with some current projects I'll be searching for another EA81 wagon. Pretty good Wisconsin crows on subies. Haven't seen much in chicago, but there are plenty around on here to answer questions. Keep the updates coming. Brats are fantastic outdoor vehicles. What sort of adventures do you have planned for it?
