  1. Out of those, I would go for a 97/98. 2000 and up came with the EJ25 engine which is more prone to headgasket failure. Plus parts are far more readily available than the newer generation.
  2. Thanks Joanne! About as good as could be hoped for. I'm going to dial up the throttle a little bit because it's idling low and give it new plugs and this car should be ready for the next 100k.
  3. yep. It's off and running. Feels like it could use a tune up. (sitting 3 years would do that.) So I'm going to give it some better plugs. Otherwise is running as it should. Would the plugs from an EJ18 swap over to an EJ22? I got some good ones in my spare motor.
  4. Fuel rail O-rings! I pulled one of the rails - no O-rings between the injectors and the engine. Swapping the rings from the old engine now. This should do it! Also... I feel pretty silly for missing that when I swapped them over.
  5. Well, put the "new" ECU in this morning. And we're still revving. Back to the drawing board. I have the old engine and all it's components, and a full EJ18 setup (same in a number of parts) Anyone have any other ideas on what I can try? I have to think that a Vac leak, even a large one wouldn't just put me at redline right away would it? Even so, there's no good way to check while it's running with a spray can or something because the engine would run dangerously high. Could I have missed something in swapping the injectors over? Also considering swapping the whole intake manifold over to see if that clears it up... I have to think this is a simple fix though.... if only I could figure out what it is.
  6. Or just a few cigarette lighters and some waterproof matches. I keep mine in a ziploc bag just in case. Also a few fire starter chunks. Nothing worse than needing a fire when everything is damp.
  7. I use retired climbing rope. Super strong (used for towing a few times.) it lays down easily and is great for knot tying. A Come-along is a lightweight alternative to the winch. A come along in combo with climbing rope or long tow straps will get you out of a lot of jams. Also would add - Duct Tape First Aid Kit Folding Knife or Multi-tool Warm Change of Clothes and/or Sleeping Bag
  8. It's a 5MT in there now I believe. 97 AWD 5-speed.
  9. I miss how off roadable the EA series cars are. Here in the midwest, finding one that isn't rusting out is a bit of a challenge and I do love the look and power of my Impreza. I could keep searching for an EA series builder, or I am thinking of swapping a D/R into it and thereby only needing one car. (in addition to my truck and summer/sport car for fun) I have been doing a bunch of research on it and I've seen it done in a few builds (Waterwagon and another lifted Impreza) But I haven't seen an actual write up for the swap. I'm hoping to do the swap and add a write up in the build thread for my car. So far I'm operating on these assumptions. Anyone have any additional information or thoughts? I'll need the following 5 Speed Dual Range 4x4 trans from EA82 series redrilled flywheel EA/EJ adapter plate Axles from a 93-94 Front Wheel Drive Impreza to match the EA spline Longer drive shaft (Would this be a lengthened Impreza or EA82 shaft?) The sensors for speedo etc. swap over right? Any thoughts on the long term reliability? I know a bunch of you have put EJ18s and EJ22s into your EA series cars. Mine is the EJ22. Does the dual range handle the power of the EJ over time? I want this car to go to Alaska and back (Not kidding. Actually plan on driving to Alaska in the next year.) In theory, would I boost my fuel economy by being able to drive in front wheel drive most of the time? How does the wiring link up from a D/R to an EJ series car? I'm sure there's more questions, but this should get the ball rolling.
  10. Try the other things listed. A bottle of Seafoam can work wonders on older/high mileage cars. Clears things out... and smokes your neighbors out of their homes in the process.
  11. Didn't say unreliable, just less reliable. I have a lot of faith in it, (taken it on several cross country trips.) but I have more faith in the Ej18 and my Phase 1 EJ22s. Got a good look at the motor while doing a trans swap a few months ago. A little seepage from the separator plate and drivers side head, but for 300k the car is doing fantastic.
  12. I don't know the full history of the car. The lady bought this 2000 Oubtack about a year ago at 272k. Still pretty impressive for one of Subaru's less reliable platforms.
  13. Can't find any nibbled wires. Hopefully this ECU does it. if not, I'm thinking I'll swap the whole intake manifold etc. over and hope it gets cleared up somehow. it's weird.
  14. There's a picture of it on page 8 of this thread. It's the second one you listed. Slip stop & leak fix. You can just drain out some fluid and add the trans-x. No need to replace month old fluid.
  15. pm and payment sent. Thanks again! I'm going over the whole thing with a mag light just in case any critters got to nibbling on the wires. Maybe I'll just swap in the wiring off the old engine to eliminate another possibility while I'm waiting for the ECU.
  16. Similar things were happening on my 2000 outback. The delayed forward engagement got to the point that the engine needed to be revved to go in gear. Trans-X is a worthy solution, but as the problem gets worse, it seems to need to be changed/added with more frequency. When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid? 1. Check your fluid levels to be sure there's no problem there. 2. Add Trans-X. It can fix the revving issue. Same problem (only a little worse.) with the same fix. 3. If it's still not fixed, do a full flush and add new ATF and trans X. I personally wouldn't use synthetic. Some might see otherwise, but plain old cheap ATF should be fine.
  17. It was sold to me as a running builder. One of the bolts was broken where the linkage bolts up. The front diff should be fine.
  18. Out of desperation/boredom, swapped over another throttle body. Figured it couldn't hurt. No change whatsoever. :banghead::banghead::banghead: What next? I've never been quite this stumped.
  19. LOL. Mine is way worse though. It goes right up to redline without fail. Slows a little at 6000 RPM but it just keeps going up. The IACs in both were loose. I could wiggle that little valve thingy inside with my finger. Neither seemed locked up. Shot the TB full of carb cleaner. No change. I'm starting to run out of ideas. What would make this thing rev out of control?
  20. Nah. I mentioned it in passing to the one sales guy and he said they don't sell whole cars. I didn't get any further than that. Figured I might call and try and talk to the boss man - whoever that may be. Depending what you end up doing, if you don't mind asking what they would charge for the trans and diff out of that car. I'm starting to give serious thought to putting a dual range in my Impreza.
  21. Unsure of the mileage. I got it from a guy off craigslist a while back. Ended up going with an 03 trans to avoid the delayed forward engagement issue and had a little more history on that trans. The 2000 one is sitting in a few pieces in my garage. I pulled the rear and pan so i could get a good look at things. Would need some RTV and about 15 minutes with a socket wrench to put it in one piece. Checked for any metal shavings etc. Looks good to me (a novice) $100 and it's all yours.
  22. I did not calibrate the TPS. Didn't know it was part of the process. How involved is that? The engine is also from a 91 Legacy and I used the "new" harness.
