  1. Rookie mechanic here.......could a new air filter be needed?
  2. I towed my wagon from Colorado to California on a dolly with the front tires on the dolly. I was told to remove the driveshaft and so thats what I did. I think it's eight bolts and was done. Once I arrived I put it back in and no worries ever since (that was 1998....lol). Hope this helps but please seek confirmation of what I did. Good luck!!
  3. My carbed 85 was having similar symptoms. I tried a bunch of bunch of attempts to solve the problem without success. I found out almost by accident the problem was a vacuum leak. Sometime I must have bumped one of the rubber caps off a vaccuum line. And that was all it was. I put a new/used rubber cap on from my parts wagon and.....bingo. The issue was solved. I'm not a mechanic, but this is probably a simple thing to test and isn't very expense I don't think. I had already adjusted my carburator, changed my wires, plugs, rotor, and distributor before I discovered the missing cap. I hope your issue is similar to what mine turned out to be. After that... my idle (with some re-adjusting) was great and my wagon was purring (same original Hitachi carb). Then, even though it looked clean, I put on a fresh and new air filter and....boom....my power boosted like I added a turbo or something wild. It was very noticeable. Hope this helps you. All the best. Aaron
  4. Thanks for the links JesZek!!! You are a great help to so many USMB members. I really think TheLoyales red wagon is how I have always wanted to do my wagon. It is very nice. I'll keep reading up on this. Thanks again. Aaron
  5. Hi jono, probably 500 lbs in the rear and back seats plus an average enduro type dirt bike's weight on the rear end. That would be an estimate of the weight. I'm not exactly sure, but just thinking about this. I need to have the suspension redone and rather than replacing with stock items which may be the same or more money than the parts JesZek has explained he used and is satisfied with. Thanks for the feedback, if you think of anything more, let me know. Cheers
  6. Also, I will probably be adding 15 inch Toyota/ Honda/ etc. redrill wheels or PUGS so I can buy actual "offroad" tires. I would likely keep my set of wagon wheels too.
  7. JesZek, I have read through the amazing write up you did about improving your BumbleBeast's suspension. Awesome job and thanks for posting it on USMB!! My wagon suspension is completely stock, tired, and needs updating. I need to do the work myself and want to keep the costs as low as I can. I want the rear extra strong because on my trips the wagon and the roof are fully loaded and I want to put a motorcyle on a hitch. 1)What front and rear suspension combinations would mount easiest, be strong, and not expensive if I bought them new instead of getting them from a wrecking yard (because they might be tired and old too) ? 2)What would you recommend? 3)Do I need to replace coils and shocks, do the coils really matter? 4) Anyone ever mounted two shocks on each side in the rear of a wagon, is that possible? I haven't done anything yet and I am trying to get the parts and any difficulties figured out before I start so the project comes together well. Thanks JesZek and anyone who can offer help or?? Cheers.
  8. Cool, I was trying to help. Here's a link to a post I made a while back that has some photos of my 85 GL non-turbo, Dual Range very much stock Subaru. I have a total of seven of the white spoke wagon wheels (just in case). The cool thing is that I can fit one in the engine compartment because it IS NOT an oversized tire. On way off the road trips I usually have two good spares. Take care out there!! http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/149092-my-1985-gl-charger-wagon-story/
  9. Your welcome and you are in a very good part of the country to catch the incurable Subaru Fever. Show pictures of your wagons!!!! (use the low resolution lens on a smart phone. The one on the key pad side) or lowish res camera photos. Posting high res images on USMB doesn't work. Cheers
  10. I'm surprised more members don't chime in here for a new member. JesZek knows Subarus extremely well, is a fantastic resource, and is very generous with his knowledge. He is correct about the rare bolt pattern. I know there are many people on USMB who know this subject up and down more than me. This is something I have been considering for a while on my wagon. Some people redrill used Toyota wheels too.... even trailer wheels... some change hubs. There's alot of info on USMB about this topic and that's probably, in general, why you haven't had more responses. Use the search feature and search the topics, posts, and the USMB. I'm sure others will add more info that I forget. But sometimes new members need to do some searcing of the USMB "archives" on their own..... In a nutshell: Older Subarus have low power already and if you add bigger wheels and tires most people like to swap in a bigger Subaru engine. Also bigger wheels and tires need changes to axles, mounts, and ?. Problem with the 13 inch stock wheels is lower clearance and basically no "offroad" type tires for them. My wagon has the stock wagon wheels and I can fly along on the freeway at 85-90 mph ( using momentum on the uphills..lol ) and offroad plenty fast enough. Challenge for me is clearance is not enough sometimes in tricky spots offroad and the tire selection is limited to street tires ( so I usually have two good spares when away from civilization). Hope this helps minty14, welcome to the USMB. Alot of great people on here!!
  11. RetroRoo is in Denver and he's the owner of this message board, I'm pretty sure. Someone will correct me if I'm wrong. There's at least a handful or maybe a dozen really skilled career mechanics, some have worked mainly on Subarus, on this message board. I won't speak for anyone of them because they should. Your project sounds like a great idea and a lot of these people know what you need, what you don't, what's a challenge, or what's hard to find, etc, etc, I recently sold an old Ford to a guy in Texas and he paid a shipper about $840 to have the truck shipped to his house. You could ship your car to one of these USMB Subaru wizards and the parts needed ot they might know who to get the neccessary parts from.....although probably more economical to buy a donor car that has pretty much all the goodies you will need. Have both of them shipped to your choice for the work/ job you want done. Would you be agreeable to someone on USMB, who will do this job for you, doing it as a "side job" for example in their own yard provided you had confidence in their ability/ experience? This could be some very helpful extra income for someone. It would be a good idea to have your plans and desires as detailed as possible so you don't miss or skip something that would be wise to be done along the way and the person doing it knows what you expect. Good luck on the project....sounds freakin awesome.
  12. Sounds like a stellar candidate for a USMB............build thread. Good luck with your plans. Cheers
  13. RoverClassics new eBay listing: ...........1970 Diesel Suburban..... 3,353 miles. Amazing 'We have replaced the Starter and the Flywheel. Truck starts up and drives. Suburban has a temporary gas canister set up under the hood. Fuel lines going to the gas tank are currently disconnected, because of clogged fuel tank. It will be sold with a clear title and it will be sold as-is, where-is."
  14. There's a part called, I think, "anti-backfire valve". It's an emission part that I need for the CA smog nazis. If that car has one I will claim it, the fasteners, maybe the hoses too if they're intacted. Does that model have the "canister". There might be other things too, not just for me, and that's why I suggested photos. Thanks
  15. Can you take photos (some closeups) of front rear ends (headlights and markers), engine compartment, dash, and interior? No hurry but for me there might be some odd ball pieces and parts that fit my 85 and wouldn't be too expensive to ship. Photos would help lots. Thanks
  16. Hey...I got an idea. I'll let you experiment, "practice", and such on my 1985 GL wagon. ....Cheers, you do amazing work!!
  17. We all know the original poster "Loyal" is no longer interested in this Subaru. I was fooled too, until Mr Loyale wisely brought up a few questions. More important here is.......... This seller, right now, has a number of remarkably low mile vehicles for sale. They have a 87 Volvo with 97K miles for sale. If one looks at the sellers recent "sold" items: still more remarkably low mile vehicles ......... sold.
  18. http://www.carfax.com/guides/buying-used/things-to-avoid/odometer-rollback
  19. What's with the timing belts covers? My 1985 has 215K actual miles (200 more than this Subaru) and my covers are intact.
  20. ........Thanks for the input. I would never accuse a seller of lying unless it was proven, yet that proof is sometimes never found or is covered up intentionally, for obvious reasons, not innocently. A dishonest seller relies on the ignorance of the buyer....that's not USMB. This seller, right now, has a number of remarkably low mile vehicles for sale. They have a 87 Volvo with 97K miles for sale. If one looks at the sellers recent "sold" items: still more remarkably low mile vehicles sold. As a seller/ reputable used car dealer, that's what you want right? Find extremely low mile clean survivors for cheap, detail them, then sell them for a premium....
  21. That seller also has a remarkably clean wagon 1992 Subaru Loyale GL-10 4X4 wagon for sale for $4500 also. ....They know how to detail an engine...that's for sure.
  22. All super GREAT points .....Mr.Loyale. And I have to say more USMB members may chime in and collectively add to this ebay item's credibility or help expose it for what it may be. "In general the undercarriage looks to have way more grease than the use of 18K miles would suggest. ...Mr. Loyale" I didn't think about it at first glance, but yes I would agree completely. Very good point. 1) My frame of reference is only a 1985 and my wagon has the front and rear stock mudflaps with "4WD" on the rear ones. 2) Also my wagon is manual D/R 5 speed not a push button. I don't know what years the D/R vs. Push Buttons vs. AWD changes were made, but this "irregularity" in the photos/ ad seems like it would be easily settled. 3) The last wheel(s) being yellow on the trip/odometer is of HUGE importance and may be the smell eminating from the can of rotten worms being opened on this potential "museum quality 18K Subaru" eBay item. I am regulary impressed with the knowledge the USMB members have about these Subarus. The car sure looks great in many ways,at a glance and to the novice, and I like stock cars being kept stock unless necessary. The high price being asked is dependent on the claims made about the vehicle being true. If the claims are lies, ...they are lies. And the sellers are liers and frauds who are trying to cheat someone out of money in trade for a misrepresented item. The eBay sellers should be exposed if this is the case. If they are legit.....great. Awesome Subaru. Incredibly low miles, super-freakin-cherry survivor Subaru. Virtuous road ahead. However, if USMB (Mr. Loyale primarily) has cracked a valid can of worms here....then I bet that eBay ad comes down pretty quick. So get sceen shots and dowmload the photos, etc. while they are available. Hopefully.....more to come on this.. All the best
