  1. Thanks for the unput everyone, I appreciate it. Found about the most affordable way is: 1) LTT, "less than truckload" 2) on a palet with a strong box built over it (see above photo thanks Ibreakstuff) 3) fluids drained (probably a couple ol towels under too) and tied down well 4) dropped at a carriers terminal for shipping 5) picked up at carriers terminal for pickup 6) the shipper quoted $275 +/- to transport the engine from San Diego terminal to Eugene Oregon terminal. Taking it to and picking it up from the shipper's terminals saves alot of cost as you can imagine. If the shipper had to pick it up at your house or drop it off there it's a lot more $$$$. So, that's an idea of the cost to ship for 1000 miles and 16 hour drive time. Aaron
  2. Sounds like a very gererous offer of your time and materials Crazyeights! I'd say, "post it all". If SOA gets upset or protective (not likely) of the vintage documents, they would send USMB some sort of infrigement letter and the documents would have to be removed. No letter comes, probably for years-if ever, then it would stay up for users worldwide. Awesomeness !!! Hopefully USMB admins will advise you on this thread about how you can get it done. Very nice of you, Aaron
  3. Great looking work done, wagon, and terrific Subaru ad photos, etc. I got A SENSE OF EXCITEMENT and subscribed to your thread. Very nice job. Can you tell us details about the camera and settings used to post great large photos like that? Great post.
  4. NICE work----------looking great!!! Do you have a USMB build thread? Thanks for posting pics
  5. Kaname91, if you do a little research, I might have an engine for you in Escondido where I live. I have promised it to a member in Oregon and he and I are deciding if he wants to have it shipped up there. If he declines, then you might want it. But you need to ask some people on here if it will work for your model Subaru. It is an EA82 MPFI 1985 engine that came from a GL-10 front wheel drive wagon parts car. It is the complete engine including alteranator, starter, intake, distributor, even plugs and wires. Look back at some of my recent posts and reponses from other USMB members for specifics about it. Most of them know much more than I do about what can be used for your 88 DL. Oh yeah post some pictures (low resolution lens on Iphone) too when you get a chance. Best wishes and welcome to the USMB!!! Aaron
  6. NIce work and thanks for posting the photos. Yes nice and clean engine - very nice! Did you do that because the stock alternators are no longer available, price, or to have better AMPS for offroad lights, winch, etc? Thanks
  7. Great effort! I've just been reading your saga. Wow.... good-goin not giving up on it. Keep us updated and thanks for posting those detailed pics earlier about the flywheel, etc. That should help some people out too. Best wishes.
  8. Hmmmmm. great input thanks! Great photo...wow....nice box- LOL. I have never shipped something like this. So, yes off the engine stand. And any accurate guess on weight? Be well all... thanks USMB!!!! Aaron
  9. Hey opus thanks! What about the weight, packaging, etc. How much did you pay? To where from where? Thanks again!
  10. Who can help me out a bit on the best way (safest & cheapest) to ship complete 85 MPFI EA82 engine (long block-I think is the terminology)? Currently it is attached to an engine stand and I assume I'll be taking off that before shipping. I don't know if a shipper would pick it up at my driveway. Who loads it? Would I ship on a palet and I shrink wrap it or tie it down with ratchet straps? Do I take it somewhere to ship it? Also what is the accurate weight? Probably be good to overestimate the weight a bit just to be sure it doesn't go over some limit. Appreciate it anyones has experience doing this type of shipping. I will be shipping it from Escondido, CA 92027 Let me know how this is best done. Thanks!! Aaron
  11. Thank for the input everyone. I was originally hanging on to the whole engine so I could use it as a core when I got a rebuilt/ new EA-82 engine built by CCR in Denver....when the time came. But I am not going to keep storing it because my Subaru is just a "cub" with about 215K. I watch the fluids and take it easy (generally) so I think my EA-82 will be good for many years. Dave T (That lumber rack is a thing of beauty) and Ibreakstuff (extraordinary USMB name but I'm not letting you drive my wagon..lol) thanks for adding your feedback. Gloyale, as always, is helpful and responsive and I appreciate it. You are correct sir......the donor wagon was a 85 GL-10 Auto FWD wagon with power windows. Its bumpers and plastic covers, front passenger side quarter panel and rear hatch are on my wagon presently. I still have the hood and various other pieces from it in a shed ....waiting for action. jono thanks for the facts about what you guys have down under..very interesting thanks. Here are a few more photos of the Flapper MAF: Gloyale, Is there something we could trade with eachother if you have a use for this engine (or parts of it) or maybe just a small cash donation to my desert prospecting "Beans and Gas Fund"? How would we get it to you affordably? Cheers everyone and be well! Aaron
  12. I reallly like the way you did the camo. Did you (or could you explain) do a post about how you did that. I was thinking off somethng similar except desert colors for my wagon. Thanks much, Aaron
  13. Hey USMB, 1) Will someone explain the difference between a MPFI intake set-up and a carburated non-turbo intake set-up on an EA-82 from 1985 wagons. 2) Also are there other differences in heads/ block/ or anything I am not aware of? Thanks for the help, Aaron
  14. Sweeeet! Glad to hear that. Be nice know average city/ highway MPG from Hitachi vs, Weber. Last two times I checked I was getting average 23 mpg highway both times I checked with my Hitachi set-up. Also, I liked to know what HP increase you get from the Weber? Be well. Aaron
  15. Good luck with the project and thanks for posting your work. Sweet project.
  16. Yeah roadsubiedog, thanks it's a big relief to have it pass. The mechanics said the state changes the smog requirements regularly and wants our vintage of cars to fail so they continue to make it harder to pass. Warning lights, poorly inflated tires, and any other FAILS that are not due to actual tail pipe readings are baloney. In America we have far too many laws, regulations, permits, taxes, fees, waiting periods, mandatory inspections, fines, federal-state-local codes.....it goes on and on and is a twisted type of "Freeom". Legislators state and federal (public servants not) deciding how it is best for us to live our lives. Well ......no thank you very much. California is probably one of worst offender states...toxic to small businesses, the poor and the middle class residents. Even those that live, largely on handouts, off the state because that it not freedom in any sense. Meh, back to our bitchin Subarus lol. I bet you will be fine. If you look at the smog report from my wagon from when it passed. It passed easily as it should, but the CAT did it. Your plan is great because you do maintenance that's great for your wagon. Two suggestions for you friend: 1) If you haven't done it before immediately prior to changing your oil and filter use a "motor flush" product (I used one by "Gunk"). You get the wagon to operating temp, add the flush, run for five minutes, immediately drain completely & then proceed as usual. 2) I would skip buying the guaranteed to pass product because I think it's a scam. One pint of Sea Foam added to a 8-25 gallon tank of gas (and then use the whole tank till empty) is probably money better spent. Your wagon has a temp sensor? Where is it located? and an ECS? I don't think my wagon has either of those. Nor do I think my wagon has a computer. Thanks again best wishes, Aaron
  17. Hey yeah thanks Mykey and rrgrr, very good on narrow off road trails where sometimes the roads are lined on both sides with paint scratching cactus/ tree/ scrubs plants. lol The Hitachi is doing fine about 5 years ago a local mechanic did a minor overhaul. Not exactly sure what he did but I think it involved a new spacer or gasket because the old one looked misaligned or off-centered. I have a whole second intake with a Hitachi I might rebuild at some point for when this one needs replacing. The rear bumper was from the 1985 MPFI GL-10 I'm pretty sure and BTW I have that engine in the for sale section of USMB. Take care all, Aaron
  18. Pure Automotive Wizardry......please keep posting. Inspirational Build. Thanks for sharing, Aaron
  19. Congrats on the purchase. She's a beauty. Please keep us updated on what you do to the wagon and where she takes you! Best wishes, Aaron
  20. I bought my wagon in 1995 from a new / used car dealer in North Denver. They had it stickered at $4999....IIRC I got them down to $2450 and had the car looked over by Rick (I think was his name and the owner) at CCR (Colorado Component Rebuilders) before I purchased it. I had never owned a Subaru but after moving to Denver from Southern California I saw so many around and old ones too. I went to Rick's shop with the wagon (dealer let me take it off the lot but only beacuse I was walking away if I couldn't get a machanic's opinion before buying) and met Rick, his wife and their shop dog, a cool bitch Boston Terrier. I now have a Boston Terrier as a result of meeting that dog....a very good dog. Rick looked over my wagon and he drove it around the block with me in it. Rick said, "looks decent...always keep an eye on your oil and water levels, use genuine Subaru oil filters, and don't shift in and out of 4 wheel drive while turning and you should be good to go." Now these years later the wagon is pretty stock for sure and has been through some scrapes. Back hatch from a MPFI 1985 GL-10 wagon and passenger side front quarter panel along with other bits. Alternator and AC system with bonus full time second fan and various other donor parts from a 1985 GL wagon non-turbo automatic. I have had the wagon through snow in the Rocky Mountains and even had studded snow tires for a time when I lived near Silverthorne. I can remember smiling proudly and charging past Suburbans and the like pulled off to the roadside during blizzard conditions on the I70. Since moving back to Southern California, the wagon has been out to the deserts on many camping and prospecting trips on some tricky roads...even up on high sand dunes in the Superstition Mountains just Southwest of the Salton Sea. That was funny. On a prospecting trip, my dad and I pulled up almost to the top of the dune field in my 1985 Subaru "Charger" (as I have named it) near this $70-100K massive 4X4 lifted Ford 250 or 350 (crew cab with fancy custom paint and huge tires) while they were loading quads into the bed of the truck. We waved and proceeded back down the dune because had we gone up and over the top we were not sure of the type of sand on the other side of the dune. That Ford was about to leave and there was no help for miles. Lately with the Subarus help my dad I located a placer gold claim at the end of of a long 4X4 road about 3000 feet up in the Southern Sierra Nevadas. We are getting geared up to go do some mining soon to celebrate my dad's 73 birthday....yes in the 1985 Subaru GL D/R non turbo "Charger" Wagon. So I will see if I can post some pictures I took today. Many thanks USMB
  21. rrgrr this is a great build! Nice work and persistance on your part. My wagon is still original 569 brown with some close match donor panels here and there but my wagons paint overall is very tired. I like the things you have done to your wagon, sorry to read about the accident but glad it worked out well for you. I bought my wagon in 1995 from a new / used car dealer in North Denver. They had it stickered at $4999....IIRC I got them down to $2450 and had the car looked over by Rick ( I think was his name and the owner) at CCR (Colorado Compenent Rebuilders) before I purchased it. 20 years later you get $2500 from the insurance....very very nice!!! Nice work and thanks for taking the time to keep us updated and posting to USMB. I'm going to follow this thread. Regarding the radio/cassette picture I posted to your WTB ad "Amber Alert". All three 85 wagons I have cared for or pillaged were equiped with that same type of AM-FM Subaru cassette deck..please note with "Auto Reverse". I have 2 of those same radios (and assorted other parts I have hoarded) but I do not know what color they emit once powered on. I had a local stereo shop put in a "spacer" and a simple Pioneer CD player about 2 years ago. I will post a pic here. Cheers! Aaron
  22. Hi roadsubiedog good to hear from you! I very glad to have it pass and sorry to take so long. I don't know why the motor would run poorly etc with a bad CAT aside from excessive back pressure from a "blocked" or plugged up CAT. In my case I think 1) CATs are probably made as cheap as possible while meeting specifications 2) I probably scrambled or dislodged the insides of mine while driving on many desert roads. One road in particular had deep tire ruts with a high center portion for about 3 miles and the CAT is not protected where it is located. My CAT had a big dent in the bottom front probably from that road. I hope your 84 passes without troubles. Your information says "Reno Area". Are you residing in CA or NV? I thought Nevada had much less restrictive vehicle smog laws? Best wishes
  23. Finally I know...... After doing the things I listed: 1) checking EGR and replace hose to it I thought may have been causing a vacuum leak 2) using "Motor Flush" and then changing oil and filter 3) locating an exhaust leak on pipe connector just before muffler and putting good new gasket in 4) running gas tank below 1/4 tank adding 1 can Sea Foam and runnning to empty 5) then on a full tank I added the product "Guaranteed to Pass Smog" 6) ran that tank to empty and filled tank with premium 91 octane After much delay, I took the Subaru in to my mechanic shop that is certified for smog testing and inspection and it failed miserable again. They said bring it back it when they could spend time to figure out whats what. I said it must be the CAT because I knew the EGR was not clogged and was functioning. What else ....could it be, the car idles great, has good power (considering HP), is pretty quiet, doesn't overheat, and has no noticeable smoke or pollution. I mean we all have seen obvious gross polluter vehicles on the roads and you would not think my Subaru was one aside from it age. So, they agreed it would be the CAT but because of California Smog rule B&%$sh%t they had to document that they "tested" the EGR and CAT. They could not simply cut out the old CAT weld in a new one and then retest. So they got a new CAT ordered and then I brought the Subaru back in once they had it. They said they documented some how that the old CAT had "defects" and welded in the new one. Then they resmogged the Subaru and......Wham bam $604 later the wagon passed easily. I have included photos of the results from the three different tests. My CAT was only 2.5 years old but while desert offroading I had banged it enough and killed it I think. I will be offroad more I am thinking seriously that I should have two complete exhausts set-ups. One with a CAT and one without. I have been told a CAT is like a sponge and can only do its job for so long. I am required to resmog every 2 years so the system with the CAT would be bolted on just prior to testing and then.....effing problems solved. Hope this helps, Aaron
  24. lol.....I ordered the boots (4 DOJ), and 2 each (2 large-2 small) of the metal "clamps" from Subaru dealer. I will reuse the roll pins. I have a snap ring pliers already. I was thinking about the zipties "baking", aging, getting hit bye a sharp rock, etc and decided to use the Subaru steel clamps. So I have never taken rear axles out of rear wheels. Any special trick? I have FSM for 1985 so I will be reading them too. I have to get the new grease still and a clamp tool (cable tie gun?) like has been talked about in the thread for the clamps. Thanks for the input guys! Aaron
