  1. Did you guys fubar the clutch cable when you were jacking up the tranny? You and Craig should be able to check the clutch cable, by one guy sitting in it and depressing the clutch and the other see the throw of the carrier. Clutch system working fine, but axle is fubar'd? Doesn't sound like it but could happen.
  2. Craig? Your thoughts? I really wanted to try to get together, but 1) doesn't seem to be as many Subaru enthusiants in the area as there were, and December seems to be a busy time.
  3. Is there another day that is better for everyone. Sucks that Mike can't make it, especially since he owes me a beer. AND, if another day will work, it would not hurt my feelings since ends up Sunday will be my wifes only day off this week, so......
  4. Job Desc. Labor Rate Hour Total Timing Belt Replace 65. 3. 195 T-belt 60 Rep. Crank Sea 65. .5 32.5 Crank Seal 8. Replace Waterpump 65. .5 32.5 Waterpump 89.00 Antifreeze 7.00 Possible Cam Seals Replace Cam Seal 65. 1 65.00 Cam Seal x2 14.00 So yeah, right at 500 bucks. My labor rate is 55.00 so it is a little less, in addition I have a $200 T-belt special right now, and I only charge $69.95 for my waterpumps, but closer to $10 or 11 on the seals. Also have a lower sling gasket $15 if it has been leaking and check all tensioners and gears while apart. And of course drive belts (A/C and Alternator) if worn.
  5. Many people hear "drive belts" (a/c and alternator) and think timing belt. Had a original owner come in with 80k on her Legacy, and I asked if the timing belt had ever been replaced because the crank seal was leaking. She said "yeah, about a month ago." Asked her how much and she said she paid $55.00. Well her drivebelts had been replaced but it was the original timing belt. Based on your picture I would say the timing belts are not "newer", but you are not showing us a timing mark, if the timing mark is fresh and solid, then it is probably newer, if the mark is not very strong, then it might be older. If it was my vehicle I would go in at 120k and put in a new waterpump, crank seal, and cam seals, and maybe replace some bearings.
  6. Well let me add a little insight to this. This was my old BRAT. When I bought it would not go into 3rd gear intermittenly. Sometimes it would if I decelerated and the put it in gentle. Pulled the transmission out and my father took it apart, found 3-4 shift fork was worn and needed replaced. Called the dealership and tried to order the part. It was backordered in Japan. So we put in a different 4speed 4WD Transmission. (later we were going to get the parts and reinstall the transmission) The differential was never touched, no sign that it was ever had been replaced. Unless there are different gear ratios in the 4 speed the ratios can not be different. It was my understanding that 82 4speed 4WD had a differient shifting points but the same final drive of 3.9 If it doesn't then, then it might have a 82 tranny in it, BUT with my father's 82 BRAT it would register 4000 rpm at 65mph, and with Northguy's BRAT and my current 85 BRAT I got 3500 rpm at 65mph showing that it is the newer transmission. I can send you the 4WD portion of the original transmission since we never put it back together because we found out you had to buy an update kit not just 3-4 shift for which was $200 bucks. And the tranny we installed shifted fine, so no need for replacement. The problem has to be interally in the transmission. BUT if you can find a 5speed 4WD transmission than I think you will come out a head. In addition if we can find you a 3.7 LSD then we can convert it and send it up to you as a 3.9 LSD.
  7. pull the fuse back out and get the oil temp light to flash. It flashes longs and shorts. two longs and 4 shorts would be 24 or Duty Sylnoid C. If that is the code then the mechanic wasted your time and money if that code was flashing before he worked on it.
  8. With the new tranny in the Legacy you should be able to rally-x that. Leaving the GL for a lift kit, etc.
  9. Took the axle apart the C clip was there, but damaged, and all the balls had come out. (that is what was holding it in that wierd position) Got the balls back in and a new C clip and it is ready to go. I left it where you had it Mike since I won't be around tomorrow and I know you want to get going on your project. Soon Mike won't have a problem with losing his balls, Shannon will have them in stored in a box.
  10. I also say Headgasket failure. You had it improperly fixed the first time by your buddy and your paying the price now. Whatever sealer your friend used might have block up and caused your vehicle to overheat, and blow the headgaskets. Hopefully you haven't done any permenant damage to the block. A check for hydro-carbon should tell all, in addition you should ask the shop for a discount for multiple times of mis-diagnosis.
  11. #2 Misfire could be electrical or mechanical. Electrical would be the coil pack, plug wires and plug. Mechanical is the valve, like the previous post. You might want to have the motor professionally cleaned with a MotorVac system. It send cleaner thru the engine, it is suppose to get rid of deposits on valves and other components. I would try to switch the coil out with a good running vehicle but I know this can be difficult.
  12. We tried to get the parts to rebuilt alternators, we found that it was cheaper to buy them rebuilt.
  13. Brake Fluid Service does not equal a Brake Fluid Flush. When you take your vehicle in for a 30, 60, 90k service all they do is a brake fluid service. Subaru labor rate pays .5 hours for brake fluid service. Usually if a shop is going to do a true brake fluid flush they get an hour to 1.5 hours, unless they are replacing components like calipers or lines, then they reduce the cost.
  14. My father also does not recommend putting the fuse in, has seen some damaged when he worked at the dealership. I use the Limited Slip additive and fresh ATF to vehicle with true torque bind. Fixed 80% of them completely. Based on what you said though, you might have a different problem with the tailshaft housing gears. Duty Synoloid C will usually produce a code if bad.
  15. Four EA82T, on the lot at one time. I call that a Black Hole. Or the beganning of Summer (cuz they overheat) I have a 88 EA82T AWD Wagon 5speed w/ diff lock and LSD. Bought it was going to do the RX conversion and 5 lug conversion to it but have lost interest. Probably going to sell it soon.
  16. If the computer system does not see the problem for a certain # of cycles of the key, it will figure the problem has gone away, and turn the light back off. I would try to find out what the code was in case the light does come back on.
  17. When my father worked at the dealership, they had a few cars come in with mud and debris that had made the timing belts jump. I think if this is a winter vehicle or an off-road vehicle that the covers do have purpose. In addition you spoke of steam cleaning the engine, I would think that just like oil that got on them, the cleaner would disinegrate the belts over time. Someone had a picture of a motor that they were building and it did not have covers, painted blue and silver, looked really good. I would do it on a daily driver but not on my ski-vehicle.
  18. I have at least one set. The ones that are on my vehicle, I would need $200 for them. That is the SET of 4 w/ center caps. I would rate these good to excellent condition BUT I think I have at least one more set, and if you don't need the center caps we may be able to talk. I also have some that are in less than great condtion, those as cheap as $25 bucks a piece w/o center caps. I know my prices are not cheap, but a feel fair compared to $180 each. Located in PDX, OR P'M me if interested.
  19. I am personally open. I will rearrange my schedule to fit the group, but think that the sooner the better because we all get busy closer to X-Mas. How about December 12th? It is a Sunday. I believe that evenings and weekends are usually better for the majority. I know some people do go to church on Sunday morning, and some worship the porcelain god after a long Saturday night. I think a 3 pm meeting at a Pizza Place or other local site would be good. We plan on meeting in NE Portland unless a large majority of people come out of the woodwork in Vancouver, or Oregon City area If people don’t show up, there will just not be a club, if you want some imput on this, hopefully you will find a way to make it. Date not set in stone, just throwing it out there.
  20. Wow!!, I think my shop should raise our prices. We usually get $495 for the 95-99 vehicles, and $419 for the older ones. We use Exedy or Astugi depending on what was OE for the particular year. $40 more to have the flywheel turned but basically that is my cost. Killashandra, I usually do not promote our shop on the board, but feel free to call and we can talk and see if our Subaru shop fits your needs. BTW we are located in Portland. www.superiorimportrepair.com
  21. I am not happy with the configuation of the new Outback, they may have similar square footage but the opening is very small on the Outback. It doesn't matter what can fit in there, if you can't get it in the tailgate. Friends of ours just bought a Forester based on it will fit a dog crate in the back and the Outback wouldn't. If I had the money I would by the Forester XT. But I will keep driving our Legacy GT, when my wife lets me. :-\
  22. If re calibrating is too expensive, then find someone that has a nice torque wrench and see if yours is still within specs.
  23. I just saw you weren't getting any response. Any questions on the tranny swap?
  24. The pushbutton system is fine, make sure you check it over before winter that it is working properly. I drove mine to Bend one time, and it wouldn't work over the pass, when I got there, I found a vacumn hose had come off. It is not ment for off-roading, but for regular snow driving or even rally crossing it should be good.
  25. The answer is YES, if you use the exact same brand and model of tire. And with 8k on them I would expect them to replace the tire for free. If you use a different brand and model of tire, then it is best to replace all 4 because even though they say the same size on the side they can be more then a 1/4 difference new. Most of us have more than 8k difference in tires because we are bad and don't rotate our tires regularly enough.
