Is the clutch properly adjusted? If the clutch is misadjusted it will slip, should have it readjusted by someone more knowledgible. I would get a return spring on the set-up and see if that helps, though it can cause pre-mature wearing of the clutch, it is totally unlikely that happened in 500 miles Unless there is oil leaking from the crank seal, or front seal on the transmission, there is no way he got any oil on the new clutch. You need to go back and ask him if you take it someplace else, and they find that he installed it incorrectly or the clutch disk is in new condition, is he going to rebate you the money you paid to him? It is also a two stage flywheel meaning any machining done on the one surface has to be done on the other, otherwise, there will be no resistence and it will slip.

You guys would drool over the vehicles we have in the wrecking yard. Most have pretty decent bodies unless in an accident and there is usually no rust to be found. I have many customer with 85-89 Subarus that are pratically giving them away because of mechanical problems but the bodies are still decent. Someone needs to rent a car hauler and make a load. I can not see putting a lot of money/time into a car that the body shop said was not going to last too much longer.

Tires will probably make you quite a bit happier. But it is an SUV, and will always have some road noise, Subarus have never been the quietest vehicle. When my father worked at the dealership back in "84 they were putting down insulation under the carpets for customer that complained, especially in the hatchback model.

I see a lot of negative threads on this section of the message board. I though I would post a positive one. We bought our 00 Legacy GT w/ 52k miles on it from the Original owner. Wasn't really actively looking for a car, but this came up and since I had done some unreverible body damage to the wife's 92 Legacy, I though what the heck. We just put on 8k, and it turned 60k the other day, no problems at all. Car drives terrific, and I love to open the slider and let the light shine it when I get to drive it. The other day I woke up in the middle of the night, and looked out at the driveway, and had to grin cuz it was a good looking car. Now, I wish we could have afforded a new WRX, but we have this almost paid off, we plan on driving it until we decide Lisa needs a Wagon. I have been driving a 98 Limited Outback, bought it with known oil leaks, and am going to do a complete reseal. it has 113k miles on it, handles really well, far better than my G'mas 94 T-bird or my Mom's Mercury Sable. It feels solid and secure. I call it Black Dragon, cuz after I get off the Freeway it smokes out of the hood vent. Anyone else enjoying their Newer Subarus?

I think Subaru went through some bad years with the 96-99 DOHC 2.5, but I do not think it is hurting their reputation that much. Here is my reasoning behind it. See it was only by 2001 that we started see major headgasket failures in the DOHC because that is when they started getting some mileage on them, it took quite a while for that to leak to other people, and by that time the 2000 and newer were out and people were buying them and enjoying them. So people for the most part do not say "Do not buy a Subaru", they say do not buy a Subaru that has a 2.5 DOHC. There are way more Subarus in Portland than there were 7 years ago. And unlike the Loyale, the older Legacy are staying on the road longer, and people see that as a good sign. After the ea81, Subaru went through a lot of troubles with the EA82 cars, especially the Turbo models, and then they came out with the Legacy, and people responded by buying them. I think it is the same thing with the new ones. As long as they continue to get better and try to keep up with others technology, Subaru will do ok. Though I would like an inexpensive coupe in the line-up as well.

Another '84 turbo wagon dilemma

It is almost impossible to do an accurate compression test of the headgaskets on that side if it is bad. It is a good sign that the other side that probably doesn't have a headgasket leak has better compression. I would drain the oil put fresh oil in it, and then listen for a rod knock. If no rod knock, then I would pull it out motor and remove the heads, don't know the mileage, but probably recommend new rings at least. Buy it back, I think I should have all the parts including the bumper with gold stripe. I would say around $2500, and I will offer my professional opinion on it as well. MECHANICS PAY FOR THEIR OWN TOOLS!!!! And they get sick and tired of salesmen and porters and lube boys "borrowing" there $25 Snapon Screw Drivers only to have the person misplace it. So so sorry if they yell at you for taking their stuff, but someone else has screwed it up for you in the past. ONLY tools the dealership supplies is large equipment, and Subaru speciality tools that they are required to buy from SOA. In addition shop supplies and disposal fees go to stuff like getting rid of oil, antifreeze, shop towels and rags, uniforms, maintaining shop equipment, to say a thing like "latex gloves" you really are considering what it takes to run a big company and maintain the shop area so it is safe for you. The main question was "Why do they charge $80 an hour. The mechanic gets usually $17-25 depending on years of experience and location, the rest goes to the dealership for running the service department. Insurance and taxes are a big fact in it, in addition overhead for service writers, overhead on the shop, heating. I am not saying it is not expensive and overpriced, but it does cost then some money. But that is why there is a place for good independent shops. But even my prices are not cheap because of overhead. For example you pay by VISA ( I get charge 1.68% of the bill) In addition most of the mechanics at the dealership are good, all anyone ever talks about is bad situations at the dealership, if you someone had a good service then they complain about the price. It is a no win situation for the dealership.

lol. He must do one darn good job of keeping the wife happy. I mean I only have 3 cars in my driveway, I don't use "our" money to buy cars, and she still rolls her eyes when I say I just bought another _______ (BRAT, RX, Cool Wagon, etc)

I am running a business that deals directly with Subarus, what is Mark's excuse. This RX had many of the parts that were less than excellent on mine, (front bumper, front spoiler, rear hatch) so I am going to swap those and then decide what to do with it

So how do you guys get the crank pulley back on tight? For your question on the chain wrench. Mine does not marr the crank enough to worry about, but some people use a old piece of belt on the inside. This is the way that many of the mechanics at the dealership does it because it take the least amount of time.

EGR Solenoid ..is it critical?

Very hard to find a good EGR at the wrecking yard. Have to disconnect the battery for sometime if you want to delete codes. If you end up giving up, I can get you a new one for about $65 bucks, just PM me. -

A chain wrench or a good belt wrench will usually take it off. Taking it off using the motor works, but unforuately you will not get it back on tight enough. This will cause the bolt to come loose, then pulley to move on the crank shaft, and a lot of money and hassle down the line. Maybe even a bad crank. A belt wrench is only like $20 and a chain wrench a little bit more. Can also be used to take the cam pulleys off of the 2.2 when that becomes necessary.

No, these are OEM. Original Equipment Manufacturer. Ishino is the company that supplied the headgaskets when the car was built. Subaru does not build all of the parts on the vehicle. These will not come in a Subaru box. -

A good wax job does wonders for protecting the paint. Might want to get a bra for winter driving, especially if they gravel the roads. Any chance your hood has been repainted due to shipping damage? Look for overspray. Dealer does not have to tell consumers of damage unless it is above a certain amount of dollars. Then all they do is use it as a demo and then sell it used.

Mike threw away the original flywheel, disc, and pressure plate when he moved. I found another flywheel, and ordered a disc, pressure plated, TO bearing and pilot bearing to match. It fit with the flywheel, but I don't think we bolted it down to check. I don't know if Mike checked that after he installed it on the car. This is the same exact problem he was having when he used the 83-84 Clutch set-up. BUT he used the 82 TO bearing and the only conclusion is that it did not mate up, though the pressure plate saw no signs of wear on the fingers.
