  1. hey... that car is listed on Seattle CL for $2000. Then again listed on Portland CL for $1500. The further south you go, the less money you pay? There's a thread on this forum about buying/replacing rocker panels. Maybe someone can revive it... ?
  2. I just fixed my fuel gauge sending unit (potentiometer) on my '85 EA82 carbed, analog gauges. I had to pull up the carpet in the rear of the wagon - passenger side. Then you will see the 3 screws for the cover. Then remove the screws holding the sending unit into the tank to repair the potentiometer... or just clean the wire connections first.
  3. Try these two simple things... in order. Unplug the maf... does your car run any better? If so... then clean the maf wires and electrical connections with CRC maf cleaner... If that does not fix it... try your spare maf from the garage (clean it first). Second...replace your fuel filter(s). There may be two for your car. Let us know if it works.
  4. Subaruise.... who and where is mizpah? do you have a phone # for them?
  5. Not sure if you have the old non-working distributor or not... But if you do, you could have it rebuilt. I mailed mine in on Monday, they received it Tuesday, and called me today to say it was done. I'll have it back tomorrow. Hope this helps. Ron W.
  6. Just try to keep the belts clean. Use a funnel when adding antifreeze or oil... don't just glug it in. The manufacturer/seller has to put that warning in there so they are not responsible when the belts fail prematurely. They'll just say there was antifreeze/oil on them.... so not their fault. Yes.... check your timing belts... often. And why not... they are right in front of you because they are coverless!
  7. at the base of the crank handle (next to door panel), there is a slot there. You may have to rotate the crank 180 degrees to see it. Look into the slot, there is a U-clip there. I use a stiff wire with a hook bent into the end of it to pull the U-clip off. Watch it fly !!! Then just pull the crank handle off. There you go !
  8. What 2" lift are you going with? I also have an '85 Wagon... will the 27" rub with a 2" ? Somebody said the other day you could make a 2" lift for $20. Anyone have any news on this? I searched... but no luck.
  9. Thank you for the reply, Dan. What year Escort GT seats? I'll have to call some JY around the valley before I head over there (60 miles). I'm not sure what you mean by the ease of installation and the single rail. Could you clarify? Thank you.. Ron W.
  10. Thanks for the reply. yes... but the 3-door coupes are extremely rare. I'll keep my eye open. Any other 'brands' work with minor modifications?
  11. Hello all. Been searching the site for what seats would fit my '83 Hatchback. I've seen the posts for the Ford Escort Seats that will fit the EA81 wagons. But the Hatchback has the handle that tilts the seat forward to gain access to the rear seats. Does anyone know if any driver seats from other vehicles will fit the Hatchback? Much appreciated. Thank you.
  12. You will be surprised when you weigh that trailer. I wouldn't pull that much weight with my GL and risk excessive wear and/or damage to vehicle, trailer and life. The cool part about camping with a Subaru is getting out and away from the rat-race and people. If it were me, I would re-direct the money towards a good tent and sleeping cot and find a place where nobody else could get to. Less cost and less maintenance. Try Miller's Peak area, East on 90, North to Teanaway Valley and keep going until the road ends. Have fun camping out!
  13. Thank you TomRhere !!! You da man. I checked the shaft play... didn't feel any movement. However, there was alot of red 'dust' in the cap. I'm assuming that is ferrous material. I had my ea82 disty rebuilt about a year ago... cost $140. Do you think that's reasonable or should I just do it myself? I've seen the distributor test machine... looks complicated.:-\ Thank you for your help. I appreciate it.
  14. I just bought the car a week ago. The PO reported that the car was 'jumpy'. so this has been a sympton for a while. It is the same whether cold or warmed up. The carb is filthy. I'll have some time this weekend to work on it. So anyone with the coil resistance specifications? And testing the secondary windings procedure? Thanks to all.
  15. the problem seems to be random spark failure. The car 'hiccups' on acceleration. The tach is jumping around between 2-3500 rpm. It seems very similar to my EA82 which was fixed with a rebuilt distributor. However, I don't have a spare disty to swap... am looking for one. So I thought I would at least rule out the coil. Just need some reliable specs on the coil.
  16. Hello All, I have what I believe is an ignition problem. There seems to be varying thoughts on testing coils in my search results. I have 2 questions for an 1983 EA81. 1. When testing the secondary winding... one probe from the ohms meter goes to the center of coil... where does the other probe go? Positive or Negative side of coil? 2. What are the actual specification ranges for primary and secondary resistance? If the coil checks out, I will swap distributors. But, have to make a trip to Auburn, WA to get my spare. Thanks in advance, Subie Bros.
  17. 15 minutes before you change your oil... put in the ATF. Let run for 5-10 minutes...rev it up. Then change your oil and filter. Hope this helps... it fixed mine in year 2000. Still no ticks.
  18. Thanks for the info MilesFox. Can you tell me what/where the fuel pump control unit is/does.
  19. You check the timing with a timing light. It hooks to battery positve/negative and then an inductive clamp over the #1 plug wire. The light will flash every time #1 cyl fires. You point the light at the top of the flywheel and will see the timing marks. You should check your local parts store to see if you can 'borrow' one. If not... they should know some old timer who has one. Good work... keep it up.
  20. I should clarify... the engine turns over... every time. However, it does not start. I first turn the key to on... I hear a clicking relay. It will then stop. So I engage the starter... it turns over great. But no start. Seems as though it is not getting fuel. So my question... is the relay supposed to click? Or does that mean it is going out? Once the car does start (after 7 or 8 attempts)... it runs fine. Is the fuel pump relay for a carbed '85 ea82 the square blue one or is it one of the torpedos in the bank of 4? Thanks in advance...
  21. Hello everyone, I've read alot on the fuel pump relay... but mostly that is on the SPFI (later years). This is my son's car. When he turns the key to on, we hear a clicking sound. So, that's the relay? I am aware of the bank of 4 relays behind the fuse panel, but I thought those were for headlamps, brakes, etc. Anyone know where the fuel pump relay is? And should you hear it click? BTW... Eventually, his car will start. My other '85 ea82 carbed (mine)... I never hear any clicking or the fuel pump running. Owned it for 20 years. Thanks everyone for the help. Happy New Year to All ! Ron W.
  22. Yes... color and license plate would be helpful. Maybe it's silver? And really? ... if anyone sees your vehicle... they should contact YOU? I would think they should contact the police. Then you. That is... if you had a phone #. TO ALL USMB MEMBERS... This is possibly an attempt to see what would happen if this guy actually steals a Subaru he's had his eye on in King County. Sounds pfishy to me. Keep the classics locked up in the garage.
  23. Yes, I ordered the 15008 for my '85 EA82 5-speed. Works/Fits great. GLoyale... when you say 83+, do you mean 83 and older or 83 and newer? I just picked up an 83 EA81 4mt Wagon. So what size disc, PP, teeth do I have? Or better yet, do you have the Exedy #? Thanks for the info. Ron W.
  24. Nice work, there. The alt looks new... where can we order one? No JY in Tillamook or anywhere near.
  25. It is absolutely necessary to have the same tire size on the front and rear. Believe it or not... the tread depth also makes a difference. Only shift into and out of 4wd when not on solid surface. Reverse helps, sometimes.
