Try the ATF first. It worked for me in 2001. No Tick of Death for 11 years. I added a quart of ATF to the oil. Ran at 1000 to 2000 rpm for 5 minutes (or until TOD stops). Drain the oil completely... completely! Replace oil and oil filter. Oil changes at 3-4000 miles. I use Delo 15-40. Seems that the ATF 'cleaned' the oil galleys. If that doesn't work. Reseal the oil pump... Search for procedure.

Differences between 4WD and 2WD EA82 struts
rdweninger replied to bratman18's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
To Loyale 1.7 : I tried to source the KYB 341232 (from Toy 4-Runner). I don't seem to be able to find that shock anywhere. I searched for a replacement... but could not find one. Any news on this? Or what years of 4-Runners will work... I read late 1990's... can you be more specific? Thanks for the write-up. Nice pics! -
New EA to EJ Manual - Prettied up :)

Yikes, the site (your link) has been seized by the FBI. Megaupload.com. Can you move the update to another host? -
Q: What should I do? A: Get an OEM t-stat Q: Really, should I do that? A: Yes... get a Subaru t-stat. 195 degrees. Q: Are you sure that will work? A: Yes... get OEM. What do they do... They buy one from Autozone. Now that's solid proof... "You can't fix stupid" My apologies to peacewize. Everyone else... lol.

ea82 valve train question
rdweninger replied to mm88swrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey mm88swrt, you could start a new thread looking for someone in the Salem/Dallas area to maybe swap distys and soob stories. I've seen a few members in that area. I'm 2 hours away in Tillamook... so not much help. Ron W. -
ea82 valve train question
rdweninger replied to mm88swrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds similar to the problem I had on my '85 ea82. The distributor was bad. I had it rebuilt by Philbin (Portland, OR). But first... I swapped in a spare disty to verify the problem. Try a spare disty if you have one. Or swap the disty from your buddy's car for testing. HTH. Ron W. -
rcrad4... I found them. Thank you. Did you order the boots? SB105 for Front and SB108 for Rear. Any other parts I need to order to complete the job? I can 'borrow' the spring compressor from O'Rieley's. Can't wait to have that "bam" go away (every time I hit a little bump) Thanks for the info. I appreciate it. Ron W.

rcrad4, I contacted kyb and they said they don't carry the shocks for my 85 ea82 wagon. It is 4wd. Can you give me a part # you used for your 88. Was it 4wd? Did you replace front & rear? Or anyone else who knows what front struts I can buy... and rear shocks? Again... '85 ea82 wagon 4wd 5mt. Thanks for your help. Ron W.

edrach, my post was in response to gloyales post from 10/14 at 1:34 pm where he simply stated you had a fault in the red/white wire. Today, when looking at the last posts, both mine and gloyales 2nd post have exactly the same time. So while I was writing my repsonse, gloyale must have been getting telepathic messages from me and wrote his 2nd (more descriptive) post. my apologies to both you and gloyale. but you gotta admit the telepathy is pretty cool. RW.

Hey Gloyale, there's a fault in your post. The guy is trying to diagnose an electrical problem. Some genuine insight and advice would be appreciate. Genuine is the key word. What's the fault in the red/white wire? Are you talking about volts, grounds, breaks, burns, resistance, flowers? An explanation of what you think the problem may be, and possible solutions or things to check is what this forum is about. Thanks for listening. RW.

click, click. No Start. Pull the starter. Remove the 3 screws holding the cap on. Replace the 2 copper starter contacts inside. They are about 3/4" L-shaped. The Battery side will be the worst one... but replace both sides. Also, file down the round copper contact plate... looks like a big washer. This will fix your problem. I've done 4 of these in the last year. Hope this helps... Ron W.

Engine Knock?.... Oh Crap! The End Of Murphy???
rdweninger replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
FWIW, I grew up in Wichita, KS. They don't sell hay there... it's a city. You'd have to get out of town to say Colwich or Andale to find any hay. I have to laugh ! Sorry... -
Hopefully not head gaskets again
rdweninger replied to The FNG's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep... that 'lil hose will do that! Last deer I hit was with my '82 GMC S-15. I had to swerve several times before I hit it. Fed my family for 6 months. Ha! -
Can Someone Come To My House And Help Me?
rdweninger replied to jj421's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My question to Ivan is where do you get a 4 ft extension? And more importantly... How BIG is your toolbox? I used a 4" extension to get my bumper bolts out. Maybe Ivan typo'd the length. I hope the kid doesn't go looking for one! -
Hello Pasco, I own two '85 digi-dash EA82's. Although they both work... I have often wondered... "how would I get the dash off if I ever need to work on the digi-electronics". Could you document the steps required to pull the dash. I'm sure there are lot's of 'hidden' fasteners. And I'm sure others would like to see the pics. If you have time... thanks. Ron W.

Well... it's time to change the rear diff fluid. '85 EA82 4WD 5mt Wagon. I searched the archives... but exactly how and where will the rear diff be marked if it is an LSD? I just bought 80w90 but got to thinking "what if I have the limited slip?" Does anyone know the location of the marks and what they look like? Thanks for the help. I appreciate it. Ron W.

What vehicle are the struts for? Is it 4wd?

ATF - Dextron II... What?
rdweninger replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank you Porcupine... that's what I'll do then. I'm not having any problems with the AT... but I'm sure it is the original fluid since 1985. -
adding air conditioning
rdweninger replied to RallyAlex's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just have to say... I just removed the AC from one of my '85 EA82's. I know it's hot out there...because I grew up in Kansas. But the high in Tillamook is supposed to be 70 today... 68 on Friday... and the predicted high on Sunday is 65. Brrrrrr ! Driving home last night as I was heading up-river... my 'new' '85 EA82 with digi-dash read 59 degrees at 6:30 pm. The other day it was 52 at 7 a.m. There are NO bikinis on the Oregon Coast... Ha! -
ATF - Dextron II... What?
rdweninger replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank you everyone for the info. I would like to go with a good quality ATF... like the Honda stuff. So how would a guy get all the fluid out of the system? If it hold 7 qts, and only 3 qts drain out... that leaves 4 qts... and now I'm faced with 'mixing' brands and quality. -
ATF - Dextron II... What?
rdweninger replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've met Steve Venagas. My brother has him work on his S-10 beefed-up version. Also had my 2003 Duramax steering linkage recall work done there. So is Dexron a GM product? Orielly's has Dexron compatible ATF. -
ATF - Dextron II... What?
rdweninger replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thanks to all for the input. I think O'Riellys has the Dex III or IV. The book says it holds 7 qts... but only 3 qts will drain out. I'll measure the drained amount... and start filling from there. I know the 5mt fills from the dipstick... is it the same deal with the 3at? Skishop... are you at Jet Chev? -
Hello all, I want to drain and replace the ATF in my '85 GL Wagon FWD, 3AT. All the info I see is to replace/refill with Dextron II. I don't think they make that any more. What should I put in that 'ole 3AT for maximum life... Ha. Is it possible to drain it all out? I have alot of Mercron ATF... would that be compatible? Thanks for your help... this is my first AT... the rest are 5MT's.

I know the OP. The car is not lifted. He had the rims trued... Brand new tires. Anybody else had this problem with the 4wd shifter wanting to engage on it's own accord?
