  1. Yes, I have an '87 Brat. I replied to one of your other posts with the info about the Brat at Hog Creek Salvage.
  2. Did you ever check on the Brat motor at Hog Creek salvage in Sallisaw? Just curious what he's asking for it. Bill
  3. Cool old Video. The problem arises because 4wd has a front differential, and a rear differential, but nothing to compensate for differences between front and rear wheel speeds Bill
  4. Posted pics when I joined the board a couple monthe ago. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=125820&highlight=noob Nothing much has changed, except I have the motor assembled, installed, and back out. See my "Discouraged" post.
  5. Since I'm waiting for parts I got out the wet dry vac, and for the first time opened the glove box. What is that little shelf arrangement at the top of the glove box? Found these. Was first sold to the Duncans of Apple Valley on 10-24-87. I've been interpreting the service manual as a non CA. 4WD. Looks like I'll have to change to reading the CA spec pages. Then sold to a MR. McCraken March of '05 for $800. Pardon the large pics. Thought I would leave them full size just in case someone besides myself was interested. Bill
  6. Yep. Now I guess the question is, have I damaged anything. If money were no object, I would just replace all parts and surface the flywheel, but this is a hobby not my main transportation. I may be guaranteeing another engine pull, but back in it goes, and we'll see how she runs. Side note. Found a pretty good puddle of fresh engine oil on the cross member. Didn't see any oil inside the flywheel housing, so hoping it's just the oil pan.
  7. Disc in backwards maybe? Doh!! Oh well I feel better having found it. Stupider, but better On the other hand even though I didn't have the motor completely buckled into the car, I feel good about how quickly I was able to pull it and find the problem.
  8. I hate redoing things. Got the motor back in my Brat (EA81, 4sp D/R). Clutch won't release. I can feel the throw out bearing moving on the transmission shaft, I think. Seems to be moving way too far without engaging the clutch fingers. I have obviously assembled something wrong and am going to have to take it back apart. In the process I broke one of the ears off the clutch arm where the hill holder attaches, so now I have two reasons to disassemble. Joy. I need a clutch arm. Will post in the classifieds. Bill
  9. Way Cool  Looks scarey fast. I'm not sure you need the other throat on your carb. Congratulations! Bill
  10. I Think I found a filter by the tank on my '87 the other day. Haven't tried to change it yet, so not positive. Fuel pump and filter in front of drivers side rear wheel. Bill
  11. Thanks for the response. I ordered everything from BelMetric. https://www.belmetric.com/s10x125x62full-p-1377.html?cPath=9_72_174 Didn't feel too raped on the price 'till they added on shipping. Almost doubled the cost:eek:
  12. Hog Creek salvage in Sallisaw 918 775-4292 has a whole Brat minus the 3 groove crank pully. Engine looks all there.
  13. 2nd pic on page two here. The exhaust connection to the head. Is that the way these come from the factory? Two studs and two cap screws? I don't have any of the fasteners and can't find a good illustration in my FSM. Bill
  14. "By retorque procedure I'm assuming you mean the start with a lower torque setting, torque all bolts in the correct patter then move to a higher torque setting and repeat as per the manual." No, and I'm breaking the sticky rule by replying because I haven't actually done this, but retorqueing is a completely different procedure covered in the periodic maintenance section of the manual. I did just go back and review that. Supposed to be done on a new car at 1000 miles. Basically loosen one end of your intake manifold, then loosen, oil, and retorque each head bolt in sequence. Read the manual there is more to it than that. Bill
  15. Called Ferguson Subaru in Broken Arrow yesterday. 70 miles away, but still the closest Subaru dealer in OK. Asked about exhaust manifold studs and bolts for my 87 Brat. "Oh we wouldn't have anything for something that old" Not "Let me look". Not "something from a newer car might fit". Just "Good bye." I may someday buy a new Subaru, but it certainly won't be from Ferguson Subaru in Broken Arrow OK! Okie Bill
  16. I'm slowly getting my EA81 assembled, and I'm at the point where I need to decide what to do with this stuff between my exhausts and my heads. I've searched, and it looks like most people just block the pipes, and leave the top end stuff off. Is there any disadvantage to this method? Also are there any anti seize tricks to make disassembly any easier down the road?
  17. One of the inner boots on the front of my 87 BRAT is torn. I'm thinking that while the motor is out is the perfect time to replace all four. Searching at Rock Auto I find two part numbers Beck/Arnle 1032129 and 1032130. Can anyone explain the difference? Ordered one each. There is no visible difference except price.
  18. Ah ha now I see, and my head gaskets are Felpro. So not only have I reinvented the wheel, but a wooden spoke buggy wheel.
  19. GD Seems to be the difference between experiance and "the book". Do you mean that I can raise the rocker assembly up, run through the torque sequence, then remove the sockets and torque the rocker assembly down ? Not trying to be obnoxious. I learned in my time as a telephone tech. that the book is for 1st timers and part of being a good tech. is learning which parts I didn't have to follow exactly. Bill
  20. 1987 BRAT Built 10 of 86 Engine 251279 came in bed of truck. Sometimes I think it's original. Sometimes I wonder. Seems to track with 81EA81's BRAT Bill
  21. Thanks for the heads up, although it hadn't occurred to me to use that to break things loose. I have other tools and BFH's for that. It did work well to apply 47 Ft. Lbs of torque exactly where I needed it. Bill
  22. okie bill

    EA81 Tool

I guess everyone but me has something like this, but since it took me a good part of my day to reinvent the wheel I think I deserve a pat on the back:brow:
  23. That's exactly what I needed. Thanks a lot Bill
  24. Coxy This hole From your answer, it looks like I have the head on the wrong side. I'm glad I checked before making anything permanent. Thanks Bill
  25. Notice the title of the thread. It's an EA81 in a 1987 brat.
