Wow, so does that mean DON'T drive it in 4wd on pavement (what good is that)? Thanks for the advice. Where is this little pin located?

I'm going down my list of things to try to fix before it gets cold out - My 84 brat auto transmission's 4wd does not engage (ea81, carb). I press that shiny red button, the light comes on, but nothing happens. I've only checked the super obvious - that the tires are the same size & pressure. The 4wd has not worked on it during my ownership (since May). Do you subie guru's have any suggestions on where to start looking? Maybe a vacuum hose on the tranny?

help! electric fan won't come on!
bratgirl replied to bratgirl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I haven't had a chance to try the yellow wire trick yet, probably won't until after the weekend (going camping, sadly w/o the brat until I fix this). Does my Brat have a relay for the fan? It didn't come with A/C, so therefore it has only one fan, and my boyfriend and I looked & looked for a relay and couldn't find it. P.S. - thanks for all the help Subie Masters! -

I think I've got a bad wire somewhere. We've already made sure the fan motor works (you can also test this by hooking up the "jump wires" that came on our meter to the battery and hook it direct to the fan motor electrical plug). Also, made sure that the ground wires are good. Also, made sure the fuse is good. Also, replaced the thermoswitch. What else can I Do? The fan used to work, and now it's being a bad, bad, girl. I think I might put a switch on the dash to operate, I'm getting so frustrated. -

Do you mean after it gets up to temperature? I'll give it try & let you know. If it doesn't, what does that mean? If it does, what does that mean? -

Thanks for the suggestion, but that was 1st thing checked. Also, ground wires for the fan are in good shape (it comes on when "jump wired" to battery. -
Hey Guys: I've got an 84 Brat ea81 with an electric cooling fan that won't behave. It used to come on most of the time (I mean, when it got hot enough), but now it won't come on at all - in a month it won't matter, but it's still 90 degrees down here. I've replaced the fan motor (and tested it to make sure it works) - still no go. This morning I replaced the thermocoupler - again no go. There is no A/C in my Brat, so I'm confused by the relay diagram in my Haynes. By that black cannister thingy, there is a whole bunch of plugs hooked up to nothing, and then one round relay (maybe?) hooked up. Anyway, I've got no idea where to go from here. Any input is appreciated!!! Thanks!!! Bratgirl

Thanks! Just an idea, the price is so cheap. Anyone else who wants this is welcome to it, I think I'll keep trying to find a salvaged one.

Hi y'all: Do you think this bumper would fit on my '84 Brat? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7915940587&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT hope this link works! If it doesn't, search ebay motors for subaru bumper. There are two of these on there.

I have to agree with you, the 82 Brat GL was the best - probably because it was the first Brat I ever saw up close & personal. I love my '84, only wish it was manual instead auto. I've also owned an '82 GL hatch (this was like a timex-took a licking & kept ticking), and an '86 DL wagon (not as tough as the '82).

help! leaking engine block '84 brat
bratgirl replied to bratgirl's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I must admit I don't know enough about engines in general and ea81's (1.8L, OHV, carburated, if this info helps) in particular - I have to take my mechanics word for the name of the part that is leaking, although I did see the leak with my own eyes at least. He says it's the block, it's on the motor's right side behind the dipstick, on the top side of engine, looks squarish, I could see the oil leaking out from behind it, and is leaking enough to make a small puddle underneath while I watch. For the moment, I'm just gonna try to tell myself the smell of roasting oil is delicious and drive it until something messes up. Otherwise engine has great power, runs smooth, etc. Although the cylinder heads are leaking motor oil also, there is no smoke so I don't think there's a blowen head gasket, but I don't know enough to make that call. -
Hi: Bought a 1984 Subaru Brat off ebay 2 mos ago, seller lied about engine leaks. I had my usual mechanic go over it, replaced rear seal and just about every seal he could lay his hands on. Get it back, still leaking like crazy. Took it back, he put in that glowing stuff, (I did get to wear those cool goggles), and he shows me that it is leaking around the block. He says he had trouble getting upper bolt to tighten, thinks there is a hairline crack maybe. We're thinking replacement. Of course I'm not a happy camper because I just paid too much to have every seal replaced!!!! What do you guys think about this? Where can I even find another ea81 engine (I'm biased against rebuilds)? Any help is much appreciated! This is my dream car, I am an extremely proud Brat owner, and I want her to run forever! Thanks!
