that's the trip monitor, which you can reset at any time. It's used when you want to see how many miles/km you've gone in a given trip from piont X to point Y. There are two of them, A and B, and you can toggle between them. Right now trip A reads 161 km in your picture. You reset it by holding down the black stick that sticks out of your cluster.

voltage regulator on an ea81 / '86 brat
belacane replied to belacane's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, I found another alternator that I had laying around, and installing it fixed my issue. Thanks again guys. I think I'm also going to look for the nissan swap alt. for the future. -

Thanks guys! Looks like I'll be installing a new alternator. Thanks for the Nissan tip. -
welcome to the forum! If you're looking for Brat help, your best bet is to head over to the Old Gen forum. There are a lot of good minds over there

Cranked up my '86 Brat the other day, and the battery gauge read between 17 and 18+ volts from start and throughout my whole drive. Otherwise, she runs like she usually does. I'm imagining that whatever regulates the voltage has gone kaput. If this is the case, I'm wondering whether the voltage regulator is located inside the alternator or if it's external. Also, if anyone thinks I'm completely off the mark, let me know as well. I'm still quite a beginner at this. Thanks in advance!

Thank you! I love her, and I'm gonna keep working until she looks and runs as best she can!

SHE'S ON THE ROAD AGAIN! I was having issues with bucking when my brat reached operating temperature. I cleaned out the carb, investigated the thermal vacuum valve, thought maybe the EGR was malfunctioning. B ut the real issue turned out to be a vacuum leak in the big line from the EGR (which I recently learned tends to leak after some years). I decided to just plug the whole thermal vacuum valve to EGR at the intake. She runs great again. Here are pictures of the hose I took off and plugged (on the passenger side of the engine).

ea81 EGR system delete guide?
belacane replied to belacane's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yep, that's exactly what it turned out to be a vacuum leak. Ended up plugging where the intake went to the thermal vacuum valve, which seems to disable the anything going to the EGR, and she runs like a dream again. Incidentally, also thought it was the car and cleaned her out pretty good. Here's a picture of what I ended up doing (pic of passengers side of the engine): -
ea81 EGR system delete guide?
belacane replied to belacane's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It's EGR valve. My car has had a bucking problem once it reaches operating temperature, and I have reason to believe that there's something screwy going on with the EGR system (or the thermal vacuum valve). I figured I'd just get rid of the EGR while I'm looking into what's going on. Do you have more details about how to do it? -
Hey all, Been searing around the forum for information on an EGR delete for an ea81, and while I've found a few comments on it here or there, I was wondering if anyone had ever written up a guide to delete the EGR system in an ea81 that is suitable for a fairly newbie to follow. Thanks all in advance.

what year is? I work as a tech for Subaru, and the very new models (2013 and 2014) are coming in under warranty with such problems because of too much oil consumption. It's not insanely frequent. But over the past three months or so, I'd say 2-3 cars have come in with that problem. I'm still an apprentice tech, so I don't know exact details about the fix though. Subaru should definitely replace it free of charge. Seems to be a manufacturing error, unless they find evidence of detonation or other misuse.

Looks like they're sold out. That's great! Shawn, if you get any more, I'm still in the market, and I'd much rather buy from you than anywhere else. -
What's the name of the dealership?

Just in time! Thinking of doing a weber swap -
Hey all, I'm contemplating a weber swap for my ea81 '86 brat. However, I'd like to keep the old big blue oval air filter and housing. I just think it looks cooler. If I recall correctly, someone on the board made an adapter so that the weber would fit with the original hitachi oval air filter housing. Does anyone remember where this post was? I'd like to see how it was done, since I want to do this myself.

thermo vacuum valve - 86 brat
belacane replied to belacane's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks guys, huge help! -
Hi all, Was wondering if anyone could post a photo of where the thermo vacuum valve is located on an 86 brat. Someone has tried to explain it's location in words, but I'm not familiar enough with the engine to understand what they mean. Thank you!

hitachi carb - issues after partial rebuild
belacane replied to belacane's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, went and opened it up again ...the idle jets had a bunch of gunk on them, so hopefully this may solve the problem? I hope so.
