rearview mirrors with Compass and temperature sensors
Stubies Subie replied to Stubies Subie's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
when I originally put my mirror on, I glued the button to low on the windshield and the mirror looked kinda funky hanging half way down the windshield, so I took a putty knife and a hammer and gave a few good whacks to the mirror button and it finally broke loose but it was anchored on there pretty good. on a side note, my ex wife just wrecked her Monte Monte Carlo and she had it towed to my house so I could junk it out for her and it had one of those mirrors in it, but the mirror in the Monte Carlo even had dome lights in it, I took the putty knife and a hammer to it and it came right off, of course she don't know I stole it, so hush is the word ok? now I got a spare mirror to put in something, either the Legacy or the pickup -
Finally got a Chevy 4x4!!
Stubies Subie replied to Stubies Subie's topic in Non Soob Cars and Bikes Discussion
that's something I was going to try to get done this weekend, it's a greasy mess under the hood, Saturday I might take the presser washer to it I'm looking forward to being able to use this truck, I know I'll never be able to afford to use it as a daily driver, the gas millage is going to be terrible, but for going to the dump, taking the boat to the river or getting fire wood, it's going to be fun ) -

most of them are rusted out around here to when you get that old, and the dash boards are cracked and split, this one is perfect, not sure how it survived unless it spent some time in a garage or something. I was looking up that issue about getting stuck in low range and not being able to shift out of it and apparently it's a common problem with just about all the 4x4's, they say to stick it in reverse and back up while pulling the shifter out of low range, that worked like a charm on this one. I remember having that problem with a Jeep grand Cherokee I used to own but it waswn't quite as bad as this one to get out of low range. I also saw a mod for a twin stick on the 205 transfer case, I might do that, then that will give me independent Hi range low range and 2 wheel and 4 wheel and 2wd front or rear. here's a how to on the twin stick conversion: http://ivanribic.clubfte.com/page2.html I hope I can get a change to do some cleaning on it this weekend, it's going to be a bit before I actually get to use the truck or drive it, so now would be a good time to tinker around with it and work some of the bugs out as i find them. -

good idea, I'll look it up and see how it's done -
I finally got my truck after waiting for it for a couple of months, here' a few pics, just got it home yesterday, 70,000 original documented miles, no rust, runs and drives great, for $1,300 It’s been sitting a few years, previous owner passed away and it sat until I bought it. And I haven’t even washed it yet, it’s really dirty. It’s missing some chrome trim, but over all the body is really straight except for a couple of small dents. Here’s the backend of it. The interior is pretty much flawless: I’m sure I’ll have some bugs to work out of it because it sat for a few years, but as it is right now, it seems pretty nice to me. I took it out in my back yard yesterday and try out the 4 wheel drive, and it worked great, but once I put it into 4 low, it was a bear to get back out, the shifter got stuck. Don’t know what causes that, maybe just lack of use? I was told the truck never was 4 wheeled, and everything is tight so it seems like that might be true.

D/R trans, good price?
Stubies Subie replied to kanurys's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
sounds like a good deal to me, I'd pay that for a D/R with 130,000 miles on it, I want one for my car, but am gonna have to wait a bit longer before I can afford to fork over the money for one. I'd say somewhere around 30 too 50-ish bucks for the rear diff -
Subaru Brake Tool 9255 90000
Stubies Subie replied to Hitoshi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the last brake job I did was easy, I went to harbor freight tools, and bought one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/four-wheel-disc-brake-piston-tool-68972.html I then hooked it to an extension off of my variable speed drill, and slowly wound in the piston, made the job super easy and the tool costs less then $4.00 -
I shampooed the carpet in the Legacy today, and picked up one of those dri-z-air moisture traps to put in the car to keep it from smelling musty while it sits, and traded one of my boats for a complete new paint job on the car, gonna have it professionally repainted the same color it is now, dark charcoal grey, this thing should look sweet when it's done )

I just happend across this ad, a 1996 Imprezza with 912,000 miles on it, it can be yours for 400 bucks http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/cto/3252566883.html the ad says: "For sale is a used 96 subaru imprezza 4 Dr. 912k miles, yea I know, but still runs and drives fine, no leaking. 5 speed, little rust, no title. Call or text ____ at xxx-xxx-xxxx if interested, want cash by tomorrow to get to a funeral." -
I got busy today and finished my major cleanup of the legacy, I finished power washing the car, then painted the wiper arms because they were an ugly rust color: While I had the paint out, I thought the trim around the top of the doors was looking bad, most all the black paint had flaked off of it, so I did a little sanding, and sprayed that to: I even did the other side: Then I scrubbed down the inside, pulled off the seat covers and chucked the nasty looking floor mats, got out the shop vac and went to town vacuuming the inside, I'm really surprised at how nice the interior is after 271,000 miles, the people I got the car from must have always had floor mats and seat covers in it because the interior is perfect: I’ll get new floor mats and seat covers for it before I put the car on the road, and I might take the car in for a good detail job and carpet shampoo.

no name yet, haven't thought of one, it might come with the license plate when I get it registered .. nothing seems to be jumping out at me for a name at the moment, I have't even decided what color it is yet, it looks like a dark gray to me, the paint code says its a dark blue and Shaun (my girlfriend) thought it was black till I washed it .....

This car has been running great since GD fixed the clutch and transmission; it had a half tank of 3 year old gas in it that I’ve been working on running out of it. I can’t really drive it yet because I haven’t switched over the title or gotten it registered and the license expired in 2010, so I’ve only been able to make short trips around the property with it which equals out to be a little more then ¼ mile per loop around the property. My plan is to put some seafoam treated fuel in the tank once I run out the old gas that’s in there now, so far, I’ve gotten it from a half tank down to an eighth tank I had a day off work and a chance to stay home so I decided to do a little cleaning on the legacy I was also able to get the bumper stickers off the back of it. The more I tinker around with this car, the more I’m liking it

nope, just on the body, and that's pretty solid, I'm learning with these subaru's that millage doesn't really mean anything. I was told the replaced engine has something like 150,000 on it, as best they could guess, GD did the clutch, tranny and rear diff, those have something like 150,000 on them he was told, parts are a dime a dozen so if the engine or tranny goes, it goes back GD to get fixed again ...I think this car is gonna be around a while. what little I have driven the car, (just around the farm so far) it feels really solid. it still needs tires (their bald) and the car is nasty filthy inside and out from sitting so long, but a good interior clean and presser wash should solve that problem. -

this is the 92 Legacy I just got fixed (Thanks General Disorder) it had a blown clutch and a bad transmission, bought it from a co-worker a few months ago, it's been sitting for over 3 years, and is going to have a sit a while longer before I can switch over the title, and get it registered. the engine has been replaced as well as the transmission and it runs like a top with no abnormal noises. millage so far is 271,662 -
We had a pretty good turn out for the event, sorry no one from the Subaru world could make it, but we did get a few cars: We had some good food, BBQ ribs and chicken, and potato salad, even had a snow cones and cotton candy for the kids, and a huge rummage sale, some serious bargains went out the door, like a nice craftsman rollaway for $45 dollars, (a friend of rugby subies got that) and a tool box to be carried in a car full of about $600 dollars of snap on hand tools, it left after someone paid $10 for it, it was supposed to be an auction but accidently ended up in the rummage sale, I saw the guy that bought it literally running across the parking lot, he couldn’t get out of there fast enough. We had a couple of old cars show up, a 1927 Model T, and an old Crosley, both cool cars. All in all it was an awesome event, Mario was able to show up, he came between cancer treatments, he was humbled by the whole thing, and we were able to raise about 2,600 dollars for him that day (and that's not counting the bucket of money that was won by someone in attendance)

wheels i just got back from powdercoating
Stubies Subie replied to rob915's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
those look sharp, WOW their going to look good on that car I have a set of wagon wheels I want to get powder-coated in black -
I'm surprised no one has said anything about coming to the event, it's close to town, and there's going to be plenty to do once you get there, and we waved the $5.00 entry fee, we figured we'd get your money at the rummage sale, the rummage sale donations are coming from union workers in the transportation industry, that's why we have stuff like SNAP-ON and MAC tools we even have some raffles going on for some pretty nice tools, and even a bucket of money that's now close to $2,000 tickets for that are only a buck, if you win, you get half the 2,000, the other half goes to mario and his family plus we got a nice huge field to park in for the 4x4's, and some choice places to park for the cars that sit a little lower to the ground. it will be worth the visit to whom ever might want to come.

The Big Mario Zepeda fund raising event is this weekend, it’s looking like were going to have a lot of stuff, a Car show, both new and old, so bring your cars and show them off, we are also having a monsterly huge rummage sale that has something in it for everyone, lots of cool stuff, from brand new tools and tool boxes, from big names like SNAP-ON and MAC TOOLS, there’s even a nice rollaway, a brand new TREK mountain bike, a pressure washer, a glass encased parrot cage, to floor scrubbers and a house hold steam cleaner, and that’s barely touching the surface of what’s at the rummage sale. There’s going to be a car show which will include everything from a brand new BRZ to a nice old Model T, so bring your cars and show them off, $10 for a special parking spot for your car, if your coming to check out the rummage sale or eat, parking is free. We’re going to have a nice Barbeque, with food donations from Places like resers, we’ll have BBQ ribs, $5.00 a plate, potato salad, and who know what else. There’s also going to be live music as well as an auction, and we got some neat stuff for the auction up to and including a nice little vacation on the Oregon coast. I really hope some people can make it, the event will take place on Saturday the 22nd, (yes this coming Saturday) from 11am until 4pm The address is xxxxx x xxxxxxxx xxxx, xxxxxx xxxx, Oregon, xxxxx, If you need directions let me know and I’ll get them up here as well. 100% of all proceeds go to support Mario and his family as he recovers from stage 4 Lymphoma

tonight after work, I stopped by GD's shop and picked up the Legacy, and drove it home. for something that's been sitting dead in the water for the last 3 years, it sure drove nice tonight. with expired tags,(the last registration ended in 2010) I was really looking over my shoulder on my way home but never did get stopped by the police. It's about an 8 mile drive from GD's shop to my house, but I live out in the sticks, so the travel is mostly dark country back roads. for the first time I really got a chance to see what the difference is between a Loyale and a Legacy ...all I can say is WOW! the power difference is enormous, it just feels like a lot more car then the Loyale. when you hit the throttle on the Legacy, you got power right now, no waiting, or hesitating about it, you hit the throttle and you know your going somewhere, unlike the loyale that's often passed up by joggers along side the road, and the mountain bike rider on his trusty TREK that just rode right on past me going up that hill. with that Loyale, it's under powered enough that sometimes I have really felt that it would help if I started flintstoning it by punching a couple of holes through the floor boards and getting my feet down there to help push it up the hills I still like the body style of the Loyale, and the simplicity of the machine, but I can now see why the Legacy has such a loyal following. beins how we just got it running, the car is still dirty filthy, and needs a lot of serious cleaning, but after driving it tonight, I look forward to getting it registered and licensed and being able to use it, for a spare car, that Legacy is a good choice I am still going to enjoy the Loyale, and it certainly has it place in my life, but whoa, this Legacy is gonna be a whole lotta fun. so I guess I should say, let the cleaning begin
-
The legacy is done, took it for a test drive today, it runs great, has plenty of power, stays in gear like it's supposed to. it's taken 9 months to get it running again, but all things considered, and beins how it's just a spare car, that ain't to bad. it's not licensed yet, and I still need to get it home, it's going to sit a bit longer until I get the money up to put a license on it. it also still needs some preventative maintenance, like timing belts change out and leaky seals fixed, but that will come in time. so far, I really like what I got, I'm only in the car 1000 bucks, counting the new tranny and clutch.

Dumb Question? Loyale vs. GL (Wagons)?
Stubies Subie replied to DT250a's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mine is a 91, and has the full compliment of dash instruments, oil presser, temp, fuel, and volt meter. the sliding shoulder belt thing I think was an option, because mine doesn't have it, (and I wouldn't want it) I only got 1 dome light, it's right in the center, not fond of that option either. got cheesy wheels and hubcaps. I don't particularly care for the seats either but ya get what ya get. I think where the GL or loyale hits the mark is that it's economical to own no matter what year it is. parts are cheap and plentiful, (that will change over time) there's nothing on the car that's hard to fix they get great fuel millage as compared to other 4x4's, I average about 32MPG on the highway being a 4x4, they will follow other 4x4's an amazing distance I consider it a throw away car, when your done killing it, go get another one and start over. I had a Jeep before this, I like 32 mpg a lot better then 15 mpg, the subaru, being older, breaks down less often then the jeep did, and there was nothing on the jeep that was cheap to fix. -
the rear separator plate is metal, good news there. the latest is putting in a transmission out of a 96 outback sport, final gear ratio is a little different then mine, I got 3.11, and I think the outback tranny is 3.9? so that means we're gonna have to change the rear end as well. the car might be on the road as early as this weekend
-
Hey GD, can we make sure I got a metal rear separator plate before we put a clutch and tranny back in that car, I've been going to mention it for the last 3 days and kept forgetting. if mine has a plastic one, I don't want it to be leaking on me, so lets seal up what ever needs to be sealed behind the flywheel before it goes back together.
