Dumb Question? Loyale vs. GL (Wagons)?
Stubies Subie replied to DT250a's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
this is kinda my own opinion, but when they switched the name from GL to Loyale, I think they also bagged any of the nicer options you cold have gotten. if I had to pick the best of the best, I'd go with an 88 or 89 GL wagon D/R 5 speed, I think that's about as good as they got, they were also fuel injected and not carbed which is a good thing as well -
I'm guessing it will be on the road in a week or two, it's going to need some other work like seals, timing belt, hoses and such, but that can wait a little bit, it will be nice just to have it drivable. I also just got a 1978 4x4 chevy truck that GD is gonna get to work on, 70,000 original miles, straight, no rust, one owner, but it's been sitting for a few years and needs a good tune up and cleaning. now every car we own is a 4x4 except 1, the celica

GD got the tranny out of the car today, from all outward appearances, the tranny looked good Heck, even the pressure plate looked ok. But once we got it apart, it became apparent what the problem was …. A blown clutch disk. The tranny pops out of 4th gear, so either we need to fix it or replace it, I’m leaving that decision up to GD. All in all, so far, so good, and not a bad investment for 300 bucks.

I still think the best headlight upgrade you can do is a set of 80/100 watt 9104 flossers at 8 bucks each (you need 2, so that's $16 bucks) and a ceramic wire harness socket adapter off of ebay for about 7 or 8 bucks, and you got yourselves one H*ll of a bright set of lights that will last forever for less then 25 bucks. low beams looks about normal for a halogen light, but get them on high beam and wow they light everything up... I've been running a set on mine for the last 15,000 miles so far and not even the slightest hint of trouble and their not irritating to oncoming traffic and they light the woods up at night quite well

in some sort of sick demented redneck way, I think it sounds kinda cool with the muffler blown off it. I might go to the muffler shop and have what's left f the muffler bypassed completely, so all I got is the stock Y pipe with the catalytic converter, then nothing but straight pipe from the cat back, at least until I can afford a new Y-pipe and cat, then a new custom exhaust system from there back.

Good looking steering wheel you got there Rugby. for me, I replaced the passenger side front marker light sockets, the old ones were busted, and I also rewired the cooling fan I just replaced because it to quit working, the plug was bad, so I installed a new one. I also tore the muffler off the car while I was out 4 wheeling down by the pond, it sounds awesome now!! if only I could get that sound with an intact exhaust system ... also put a new/used/better tire on it for our California trip that we just got home from, experience n car problems at all. ran another can of seafoam through the gas tank on our California trip, and I'm now noticing that the car is running much better, and a lot smoother on acceleration.

hahaha, yes, I admit it, knowing GD and having him live close by has it's benefits. As far as that tranny is concerned, there was something wrong with 4th gear to begin with, it wouldn't stay in gear so the people I got it from would just skip right on past it and go straight into 5th gear from third. so at the least, the tranny needs to be looked at or repaired or something so it will stay in 4th gear.

I just got home and noticed that my legacy is missing, it's no longer parked in the driveway, nothing there but the empty spot where the car used to sit with 4 tire marks embedded into the blacktop. this could mean one of two things, either someone stole it, which would be ok with me because it was busted anyway, .... or ..... General Disorder came over and got it so he could fix it. I'm leaning more towards General Disorder getting it, Yee-Haw!! ...my legacy is gonna get fixed I so happy, this calls for a celebration, pass the milk and cookies please

my 1,000 miles round trip
Stubies Subie replied to Stubies Subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had one fan that was working intermittently, had the air conditioning blowing full blast, I just had the fan replaced but the plug had a short in it, so every now and then I'd get under the hood and wiggle the plug and the second fan would kick in, but even without it, pulling those hills in third gear with the AC blowing, it never got hot. I'm working up a list of things that needs to be done to the car, once I get the Legacy back home and running, I'll turn over the loyale to GD and have the bugs fixed. all in all, it's done very well and proven itself dependable. I'd love to do a 4,000 plus mile road trip, but funds and time seem to play a factor in my travels, plus to many irons in the fire with the new truck and having GD fixing the Legacy. -

I want to try it in the Legacy and compare the two, although the wagon was fun, I did get a thumbs up from someone else driving a wagon down in Ashland. when pulling the mountains, I'll admit, it was the slowest car on the road, even got passed by a semi at one point as we headed up the hill. yup, I think out of the whole trip, that plate got the most attention, mostly old guys walking up to me in rest areas to shake my hand, telling me their call asking me where I was headed and wishing me a safe trip, listened simplex on 146.520 for a while but there wasn't anyone on it other then around Roseberg -
my 1,000 miles round trip
Stubies Subie replied to Stubies Subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it was a 5 day trip for us with a few side trips, (that's how we were able to clock 1,000 miles) we even went to a shakespearean play in Ashland Saturday night and watched King Henry the 5th. that was the first time I'd ever been to a play like that, it was ..er, well, different. we also drove around and did a little sight seeing, I was amazed at how well the car did. it didn't drink a drop of oil, (but it does around town), and everything worked fine, I believe that car has more then proven itself on the road trips it has taken and bought us home again. -
I just had to post proof that I made it all the way from Portland Oregon to Yreka California in my trusty little subaru, getting over the mountain from Asland to the California border was a challenge with a loaded car, we did 35 MPH in third gear climbing up the mountain, but it never missed a heart beat, and the car never even thought about getting hot, the temp stayed in the normal range (below the half mark on the gauge) all the way up the hill. we drove to Yreka just to say we've had the car to california.

Lol...
Stubies Subie replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in BRZ and its Sister the Scion FRS/Toyota GT86
I had a 2013 BRZ parked in my driveway last Saturday, beautiful black car, she parked it right behind my old Loyale came in visited for a while, my kids stopped by to visit, saw the car, asked "what's that?" we said it's a BRZ, and now my boys want one. it was a big hit at my house -
if your Loyale is 4WD I would go with a set of 4 snow tires instead of two. if your car does not have 4WD then you should be fine with just 2 snow tires mounted in the front. around here craigslist is a great source for 185/70/13 snow tires for some reason but not so much all season tires. I see sets of 4 snow tires advertised often for prices around 100 to 150 bucks with 90% tread or better. back in June I was able to pick up a brand new set of 4 studded snow tires off craigslist for 80 bucks. buy the snow tires in the summer when no one wants them. I just priced a new set of 4 - 185/70/13 all season tires yesterday at a price of 240 bucks, but I think I'm gonna hold out a bit longer before I buy a set.

Vroooom ... I can almost feel the rumble vibration of that EJ22 coupled to that 5 speed gear box with my hand resting on the shifter, sitting studly behind the wheel of my latest ride Confidence in Motion, me and my trusty little Legacy, a legend in the making .... Feel the love ....... it's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

I like those tail light guards ... -
I just put a ham radio in mine, it's not permanently mounted yet, just kinda have it sitting on the dash, I'm not brave enough yet to be drilling holes in the interior, but I'm gonna have to do it sooner or later.

that screw stopped me dead in my tracks, I was on the freeway, that screw that holds the rotor in place came loose and it was like someone shut the car off, I came to a dead stop on the freeway. GD towed me to his house and he had it running again in less then 5 minutes. I'd listen to what GD tells you, follow his advice, then change your user name to something a little less offensive. -

What’s that clunk?

talk to ShawnW, he'll sell you good used ones for a couple bucks each or so, I think he also has new for a fare price. the last time I went wrecking yarding for some cone washers, out of something like 6 or 7 loyale's I only found 3 good cone washers, when you consider that each car at one time had 4 good ones, I only came up with 3 out of a possible 24 to 28? that's a really bad number, if I could only find 3 good ones out of 24, it leaves me to wonder, how many bad ones are on the road? granted a couple of those cars were already missing the cone washers when I showed up at the wrecking yard, but at least a third the cars I looked at were missing the concave washer that goes between the castle nut and the cone washer, (none of those cone washers were any good) I think that's proof that those concave washers and cone washers are something people don't pay a whole lot of attention to and they should. -

GD says it best, replacing the axle nut (castle nut) isn't going to solve the problem, it will only hide it for a few miles, and from looking at your photo, you have to much of a gap in your cone washer. there's also a somewhat curved washer that goes between the cone washer and the castle nut, that also only goes on one way (domed side up so the only part of the curved washer that's touching the cone washer is the outside edge) if it weren't for GD pointing this out to me and going wrecking yarding with him and seeing the difference between a good cone washer and a bad one, I woulda never known the difference. but it makes a huge difference, and it doesn't take much to wreck a cone washer. basic rule of thumb is, if the cone washer has ever come lose at any time, it's wrecked and should be replaced, the slightest little ridge on the side of a cone washer renders them useless.
