  1. I know on older cars that is a symptom of the ballast resister being bad. When cranking, full battery voltage is fed to the coil for a stronger spark when starting. After the ignition returns to run, the coil is powered through a ballast resister lowering the voltage at the coil as not as strong a spark is needed. So with a bad ballast resister the car will run in "start" and die in "run" key position. Disclaimer... I dont know what car you have or if it even has a ballast resister or not.
  2. They did in fact have seat belts in the back for the jump seats! I still have them in my '84.
  3. My hill holder was also leaking. I removed the cable years ago and it has not leaked another drop.

  6. I bought a set of Gen 2 from ebay about 5-6 years ago. I got a full set but only used the "BRAT" stripe over the cab for a little more minimalist look. If I remember correctly I had to pay a little extra because I wanted gun metal gray instead of one of the offered colors. Mine still look great to this day but my brat has always been garaged so that really helps. I would definitely recommend them. Luckily I had a friend that used to apply decals to company vehicles help me as getting them to fit correctly over the cab does take some skill!
  7. I don't know if this helps or not ..EA81, 1984 Brat, 1800, solid lifters,.. high altitude kit,...
  8. I did mine in black with chrome trim rings. I think it turned out nice.
  9. My hill holder would leak brake fluid when the cable actuated it. So I disconnected its cable from the clutch fork and have been running that way ever since with no problems. It doesn't leak a drop this way and if I'm on a really bad hill I can always use the hand operated emergency brake, although driving a clutch all my life that really isn't necessary. Also, most drum brakes (I assume subarus are the same) usually have a short shoe and a long shoe. Make sure the short shoe is towards the front and the long shoe is towards the rear of the drum or you may get the kind of symptoms you describe.

  11. It brought $4950 on EBay. Someone will have fun with that thing
  12. I had a problem initially trying to pass Colorado smog test with my '84 brat. They insisted it was supposed to have a computer and o2 sensor and wouldnt listen to me when I told them it never had a ECM. After about an hour with the manager he figured out if he looked it up in his computer as a Subaru truck (he was looking under car) it then showed correctly on his computer and it passed with flying colors. Next time I went back I told them to look it up as a truck and they found it just fine.
  13. I clean up the axle and give the surface a thin layer of oil. It seems to help it pull through the bearings easier.
  14. It looks like it must of been almost 5 years ago as my plates expire in August of this year. I live in Arapahoe county if it makes a difference? It never needs another emission test again as long as I own it. I have two cars with collector plates!
  15. I have collector plates on my '84 right now in Colorado. About 4 years ago the law was 25 year old cars qualified so I got my plates just before the law changed. My car is now grandfathered in and can stay on collector plates as long as I own it.
  16. I sandblasted mine, painted them black and then added chrome trim rings. I think they look great
  17. You should have around 14 volts with the engine running, even if the battery was bad. Sounds like alternator to me.
  18. try to spray some starting fluid down the carb just to be completely sure its not a fuel issue.
  19. I have an hitachi carb and mine starts great in cold weather. If your carb is in good shape are you "setting" the choke correctly? First thing you do before you try to start it is press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and then release it. That sets your choke and fast idle. When the car starts it will fast idle around 2000rpm or so until you blip the gas pedal again and then the idle will drop to normal. Most older carburated cars worked like this and the hitachi does also if in proper working condition. Greg
  20. I have some pictures in this thread.. Kinda hard to see.. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/141474-installing-bed-seats-in-a-1987-brat/page-2
