HID lights on the GL wagon
eggroller replied to suberdave's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I hope I can help educate. Furthermore, I hope that I don't end up in the oncoming traffic when driving around WA. The light scatter from your headlights is tremendous and blinding to everyone else out there. The picture of the bulb/capsule clearly shows that there is nothing blocking the rest of the reflector from the HID capsule. Therefore, the entire reflector is being used. i.e. High beam. All of the time. Notice the amount of light above the 2nd panel on the garage door? That is stray light blinding others. If you can, get a friend with factory HID lights to shine their headlights in the same location as your car is now. There are the projector type and the reflector type of HID. Both will have a sharp cut off to reduce the glare. Furthermore, the light is spread very evenly without the hotspots you see now. A well focused HID is amazing. Lots more to read about retrofit/conversions here: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/Hid/conversions/conversions.html Retrofitting projectors is by far the best way for the best results. If you can, get the Bi-Xenon projectors. They have a moveable cutoff shield so that you have low and high beam headlights. The lens has to be clear (i.e. no fluting to refract the light) Lots of information can be found here for retrofitting: (requires registration/login and is WELL worth it) http://www.hidplanet.com/forums Hope that helps! -
KYB gr2 part numbers and places to order?
eggroller replied to eddygordouk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Please see my post #8 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=54963 I was quite satisfied with the speed and accuracy of the outfit. Very satisfied with the GR2 shocks/struts. Note these are all 4WD parts. Aw heck: -
The durometer of the polyurethane is suppose to be around 55-60 (shore A). It will be stiff but the rubber is still inside there. So the overall stiffness is supposed to be pretty liveable. We will see later when I get them installed.
-
I didn't take the distributor off when I did the timing belt either. Sure, enough I had to pull it out and position it correctly. (after all of the other steps)
-
For engine mounts. I purchased a new set of motor and transmission mounts. Went to the local Schucks (Auto parts store) and bought a tube of 3M Window Weld. Wrapped them in plastic and pushed the polyurethane into the voids between the rubber mounts. I let them dry for a week and will install them soon.

Aftermarket Stereo Faceplates to a Good Home
eggroller replied to brianbarber's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I purchased my kit from the local Car Toys. I have the Metra 99-8900 kit. I used the faceplate for my 88 Wagon. The faceplate I used is for the EA82 cars (faceplate #1). The faceplate for the EA81 is available (Faceplate #2 includes the 82-87 Brat, 81-84 DL and 81-84 GL). Finally the faceplate for the Justy is available (Faceplate #4 w/mounting brackets) The faceplate #s are found in the instruction manual: http://www.metraonline.com/downloads/pdf/TurboKits/INST99-8900.pdf Anyone want Faceplate #2 or #4? $5 for each faceplate set (money is for shipping) will get them. USPS Priority. USA only. Originally posted here -

Agreed! Rob goes above and beyond. -
I only want to interject that there appears to be Poly bushings available for the EA82 in the US(see my post on page 4)

I hope I can help educate. Please don't take this in a negative way. 'HID' bulbs with the blue tint REDUCE the output of useable light. Specifically the lumens produced. Furthermore, the light is filtered to be in the blue spectrum of light. This is horrible for night vision. Lots more to read about Blue bulbs: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/bulbs/blue/bad/bad.html Please don't install a HID conversion/retrofit kit into the existing headlights! The light scatter is tremendous. The glare produced by this scattering of lights is blinding to other drivers on the road. A well focused HID is amazing. Autocrossing the Loyale this weekend... tips?
eggroller replied to Syonyk's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Trailbraking...I love doing that on mine. I tend to throw it into the corners with reckless abandon without touching the brakes. Amusing, but you know as well as I it is not the fastest way around the corner. BTW: Smooth driving!!! -
Autocrossing the Loyale this weekend... tips?

I loved the video and pictures! So, THAT is what I look like when I ripping up the corners with my ride! Thanks for the smiles!!!! -
My RX that didnt make the show **Update**

Rob, now that is a saga! Glad to hear that you made it down there. Both you and me had cooling issues this weekend. You definately took the cake, thought. I only had a boilover when I climbed up to 5600 feet for some camping @ 90+ degree temps. I too was watching the water temp like a hawk. I am planning to get a 2 row radiator and double fans to keep the heat at bay for the next time I am putting some serious load on the car. -
Yup, live and learn! I am definately going to tone it down a little bit. FYI: You have PM.

It is hard to justify getting rid of these tires I have now with the amount of tread that are on it. I will just tiptoe through the tulips and make sure to be careful of the sidewalls. Of course I find the Tire FAQ after I already went through this episode! Thanks for the support & knowledge, guys! UMSB rocks!

Oh, great. Lovely tires. So much for not worrying about the tires since they are 6 ply. I am going camping this weekend @ ~5,000ft up. I guess I can't play as much out there and I need to pick my way up and be safe. Les Schwab will get the new tire on the wheel by Thurs.

Ah, learn something new everyday! Thanks!

Cliff Notes: When beating on the car in a field make sure you don't slide it around too much when there are sticks around. Your sidewalls might not have the strength it has on the treads. The car: '88 GL Wagon 5 speed D/R with 14" Peugeot wheel sporting 195/75-14 Wildcat LT A/S 6-ply tires. The situation: Rallying it in a field and on gravel roads. I found out the hardway that the Les Schwab Wildcat LT A/S 6 ply tires don't have 6 ply on the sidewalls. A stick punctured a hole in the sidewall while goofing off in a field. Apparently the sidewalls on these tires don't have the 6-ply continue around from the tread. Another thing I learned was that Road Hazard warranty means exactly that....No offroad warranty. DOH! At least Les Schwab guys met me halfway.

Welcome! There are quite a few things you can do to mod the car. Engine swaps, suspension/body lifts and more. Suspension: Mine was worn out pretty bad. I installed the KYB GR-2 shocks/struts. Most people here on the board use them. I now know why. Pretty darn good. Here is where I bought mine. They had one of the lowest prices around: http://stores.ebay.com/Performance-Peddler Your part number to search for can be found at KYB's website Tune up the engine. Instructions are available in the USRM Exhaust? I put a cheap turbo muffler in per the instructions in the USRM

Really Stoopid Things We Have Done
eggroller replied to subbum's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Were you at my house or something? That is exactly what I did the 1st time I did some work on this car. DOH! Worse part of about it is that the catalogs all showed the wrong axle for my '88 GL Wagon 4x4. It spec'd a 25 spline for it. So, I measured everything and brought the old axle with me to find the right one. Another one: I put in a new water pump, oil pump, timing belt. Got it all back together and went for a drive. Sounded like garbage. Park the car in the garage and look down at my new parts pile and see an o-ring. Dang it! Forgot the o-ring around the oil pump! Tear it all apart and low and behold....it was missing. Re-timed the distributor and the car purrs now.... -

EA82 Radio Questions
eggroller replied to SyntheticBlinkerFluid's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
SyntheticBlinkerFluid, Yes, there is a fit/installation kit for EA82. I have a wagon and it required spacing it out 1" from the dash to fit a standard DIN radio. The hatchback's, if I recall correctly, required a panel replacement. I believe I have extra parts for the fit/installation kit which I will never use. It came with all the parts needed for almost all years and multiple models of older Subarus. IM me your address and I will give you the parts and I just want you to send me the postage for USPS Priority. Please cite what relevant information is needed (make, model, year) and I will look at the kit. Then send you pictures. -
whoa, cool information!
