Flipping it did help a lot, I went wheeling the other day and there wasn't any clunking or binding of the driveline . I had my buddy make me a skid plate at his work out of some 12 gauge sheetmetal . Seems pretty solid and should hold up . Cost me a whole 12 bucks only downfall is he wrote "yee" on the front of it with a torch, I'll probably just paint over it lol

Well that was a simple fix lol ! Thanks man
-
Hmm ok I'll try that and see what it does .

I got my electric fan working. .... Anyways, i also got my 4wd lever figured out But when i went to go play in a field yesterday where there is a little mud pit i noticed a large "clunking noise" when i put it in 4wd and got on it . It feels like the driveline is spinning, then grabbin really hard, spinning, grabbin really hard . like something is catching inside. the exhaust is out of the way so its not hitting that . Could it be that the driveline mount in the center didnt get dropped and still sits like this: and its causing to not spin right ? Possibly need to do a diff flush ? It does NOT make the noise in 2wd, runs and drives fine in 2wd . Rear diff is still open as well, not welded up .

I just replaced it with a new one . The old one was electrical taped and had small screws going through the ends of the wire into the switch ..... Now all is well the fan works and my engines staying cool
-
Awesome thank you .

Found the temp sensor lol it was all covered up in electrical tape from the PO so I didn't notice it . If the in rad temp sensor is bad will it cause the electric fan to not come on ?
-
Which year of ea82's came with a in rad temp sensor ? I just now finding out that ea82s had the in rad temp sensor ..... I have the hole in my rad for where it would go but it has a plug there . And does it connect to the electric fan at all ? I have an 88 gl spfi and ive replaced both the temp sensors up by the thermostat housing but i still have some high idle issues, the sensors were new a couple months ago . Im wondering if its connected to the electric fan at all because my electric fan does not come on, ever . I deleted the whole A/C system so its not connected to that anymore but its supposed to come on when the motor starts to get hot also, and i was on my way home when it started reading about 3/4 on the temp gauge, so i popped the hood to see if it was running when i got home and it was not . I also dont have the clutch fan anymore cause i just got done with a 6" lift so it had to go ..

Racing your subaru at straddleline ? id come down and watch that then i could ride my dirtbike on the track !

I know this is a little off topic but id rather not make a new thread and wait for responses. Would rather just ask you guys in this thread ..... Anyways i got to drive my rig around town yesterday, topped off the coolant and oil before i left and let it warm up for a good 20 minutes or so to see if it would get hot or not since im just running the electric fan and ditched the clutch fan.. But it didnt get hot nor did that electric fan ever come on !? Which i was a little sketched out driving around cause i didnt want it to over heat but it stayed normal, a little below the 1/2 mark . Anyways i know that the elec. fan is supposed to come on when the A/C in on or if the motors getting too hot. But i deleted my whole A/C system so what im wondering is when is my electric fan supposed to come on if the A/C is gone and the motor is not getting hot ? i want to run another electric fan in place of the clutch fan for peace of mind. Ive heard that the ea81s with ac will work and you can use an electric fan from one of them .... thanks

Got the strut blocks and steering figured out ! She sits nice an straight now . Now all I need is to bleed the brakes and extend my pitch rod and 4wd lever .
-
Anyone got any pics of how their 4wd lever is extended ?
-
Thats another thing i was thinking was the blocks could be in the wrong way.
-
Well i got everything done, got new rad hoses, heater hoses, and reconnected everything. I've got some camber issues that need to be worked out. I took it out of the garage and rolled it back an forth a couple times but it didnt seem to do anything . dont think ill need to modify the shifter linkage, but i will need to extend the 4wd lever an inch or two . What do you guys do with the plate that is underneath the levers ? Right now its just kinda hanging there cause i had to take that 12mm bolt off so it could drop down and it was slightly rubbing on the driveline when i drove it back an forth .. I also cant put my muffler back on to the mid-pipe. the mustache bar is getting in the way and wont let the muffler drop down enough to bolt onto the midpipe .. :-\ Also i think i need to take the steering linkage off and turn it 180* because when the steering wheel is directly centered the wheels are turned to the left but when i turn it a half turn and its upside down the wheels are straight

Well I got the rear done, it took me a majority of the day but I was by myself . Got somethings taken off the front end, vac lines, pitch rod, clutch fan, coil wire. Gonna be dropping the radiator and unhooking everything else tomorrow . Here's some pics, I love that diff drop !

Recommendations?? (Shocks, springs, axels)
Skylar replied to rcrad4's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
For cv axles go to Rockauto.com and order the Empi brand . Why do you feel like you need to replace the shocks and springs ? -
Ok cool well ill look around and call some places. Do they make lines specifically fit for our subarus that screw right in ? And oh yes the pitch rod on top lol ! ok ill make sure to extend that didnt know i had to . So for the rear should i just disconnect the brake lines and start throwing the lift on and try to work something out from there ? I know for the front im gonna have to disconnect the steering shaft, and shift levers before i start lifting and the radiator hoses. And try to see how much slack i can get from the front brake lines but i might just disconnect em . Goddamn there's SO much more involved with a 6" kit but im ready for it ! lol
-
Ok cool ill lift the car back up and turn the jacks 90* . And yeah i was thinking about getting some braided lines, moneys a little tight at the moment so we'll have to see. Who did you have make the lines for you ? And darnit ! i was just up at jeffs on saturday, coulda snagged those too but oh well .. and ok thanks for the fyi, i figured it wasnt too heavy. Also, what's the pitch rod lol ?
-
yeah the Sjr kit requires you to drop the rear subframe, 2 blocks on each side and the diff plate . Heres how it sits right now: I just dont want to start tearing things apart and have the rear subframe and diff fall on me and idk if ill be able to throw my tires back on after i do the rear because of how low it sits right now.. Or would everything stay in place if I unbolted everything except for the big bolt that holds the diff up towards the frame, i think its like a 22mm and it sits right on top of the diff .
-
Ok so about to start tearing things apart .... Where is a good place to put some jackstands lol I seen that michael apple put some right behind/ underneath the rear doors but that seems sketchy .. there's no where really to put some since its all a uni body . Also im gonna be doing the rear first, do i need to undo my brake lines ? I really have no idea where to start im kind of just eyeing things out and putting 2 an 2 together on where the blocks go and what not . Any tips or directions on what i should start with first for a easy install would be greatly appreciated !

Haven't gotten started yet :/ just got the shocks the other day from Jeff and I just got done painting everything so hopefully this weekend ! Also I just noticed after I got done painting that the trans X blocks are different sizes, Scott do you know if one goes on a certain side or if it matters ?

I'll be bringing my wagon, it'll have a 6" lift on it as soon as I get off my lazy a** and go put it on lol
